a ries A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK LINOLEUM EDGING Application filed January 21, 1930. Serial No. 422,406.
The present invention relates to an im proved linolum edging particularly suitable for wall base or cove base which is adapted to be applied at the junction of alloor and wall.
Referring "o the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the conventional construction of linoleum wall base and particularly illustrating the manner in which the upper edge is rounded;
Figures 2 and 2a are sectional elevations illustrating a preferred form of improved linoleum edging embot ying "1y invention, and the method of makin the same;
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation illustratin another adaptation of he preferred form or my invention in linoleum cove base;
Figures i and 4a are sectional elevations illustrating still another form of improved linoleum cdgz ii'ig and the method of its manufacture.
Linoleum wall base and linoleum cove base are usually provided with a rounded upper edge 1, shown in Figure 1. Such rounded edge is invariably formed by cuttin or abrading; square-edge stool; 2. The texture of the rounded surface 1 thus formed by aria-ailing or cutting is, however, quite different from the calendered surface 3 of the body of the base DPJ-D'llJEI', being much coarser than the latter. Frequently too, there is a variation in color between the respective surfaces 1 and 3 owing to this difference in texture. Both of these variations are objectionable. Still another disadvantage of the conventional construction is the susceptibility of the lip 1 of the rounded edge to become broken or otherwise damaged in handling and installing.
It is the object of my invention to overcome the recited disadvantages and to provide an improved linoleum edging adapted for use as a wall base or cove base having a rounded edge, the surface texture of which is 'dentical with the surface texture of the remaining exposed plane surface of the edgin A further object is the provision of an improved construction whereby the rounded edge of the linoleum is greatly strengthened and its susceptibility to damage is eliminated. I will now describe a preferred embodiment of my invention with particular reference to its adaptation in linoleum wall base or cove base as shown in Figures 2,2a and 3.
in forming straight linoleum wall base ac cording to my invention, I cut out or remove. "ruin a piece of square-edge stock a, a rectanulai' section Z) as shown in Figure 2a, located the back and adjacent one edge of the stock ms lcavi a long, thin strip 5 of the face ortion of the stock integral with the body ereof.
a tri'angular-shaped strengthening or stiii'ening member 6, referably of wood, harinp; an edge 7 abutting and adhesively engagiing the base of the recess 6 and an edge 8 flush with the rear surface of the stock. The third edge of the stitl'ening member is of curved contour as shown. The strip 5 leum is formed over the curved surface 9 and adhesively united therewith thus completing the construction. In Figure 3 l have illustrat-ed this preferred form of my invention as embodied linoleum cove base. v
From the above description and reference to the drawings, it will be observed that my invention provides a linoleum edging of novel. C0i1.-;tl'[l0'l'lt)ll in which the rounded upper edge of the linoleum is materially strengthened and in which the surface thereof is a continuation of the surface of the remaining face portion and therefore of the same texture and color.
In Figures l and la I have illustrated modified form of my invention in which a portion of the linoleun'i stock itself forms a backing member for the face portion of the curved edge. According to this embodiment, a recess 0 of approximately V-shape (see Figure 4 is cut out or removed from one edge of square-edge stool; 4 leaving a long, thin strip 10 of the face portion of the stock integral with the body thereof and also a wedge-shaped projecting member 11 integral with the rear portion of the stock, such projection 11 being provided with a face 12. of curved contour. The strip 10 is formed over the curved. surface 12 and adhesively united thereto thus completing' the construction. In this form, as in Into the ripening 5 thus formed I .Of the lino-- the preferred embodiment, the exposed surface of the curved edge and the surface of the remaining face portion of the linoleum are identical in texture and color, the surface of the curved edge being in fact a continuation of the surface of the straight poremployed in providing a rounded or curved edge for linoleum when used for desk pads, table coverings, etc., such a variety of applications being within the purview of my invention.
Claims:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a linoleum wall base comprising a body portion and an edge portion said edge portion having a surface of curved cont-our, and a strengthening member inter-fitting a recess in the linoleum and having a'curved face adapted to form a backing for the linoleum face of the edge portion.
I 2. As a new article of manufacture, a linoleum wall base having a body portion and an edge portion, said edge portion comprising 'a wedge-shaped backing member and a linoleum facing member, said facing member being integral with. the body portion of the linoleum and united with the backing member.
As a new article of manufacture, a linoleum having a body portion and an edge portion, said edge portion comprising a wedge shaped backing member, and a linoleum facing member, said facing member being in 'tegral with the body portion of the linoleum and united with said backing member.
4; As a new article of manufacture, a linoleum having a body portion and an edge portion, said edge portion comprising a wedgeshaped backing member having a curved surface, and a linoleum facing member, said facing memberbeing integral with the body portion of the linoleum and united with the curved surface of the backing member whereby the linoleum is provided with an edge portion of curved contour, the surface of said edge portion being a continuation of the surface of said body portion and of the same texture.
' 5. As a new article of manufacture, a linoleum having a body portion and an edge portion, said edge portion comprising a wedgeshaped strengthening and backing member, and a linoleum facing member, said facing member being integral with the body portion of the linoleum and united with said strengthening and backing member.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a linoleuinhaving a body portion and an edge portion, saidedge portion comprising a wedgeshaped backing member integral with said body portion, and a linoleum facing member integral with sand body portion, the ad acent surfaces of said wedge-shaped backing membody portion and having a curved surface,
and a linoleum facing member integral with said body portion, the surface of said facing member adjacent said wedge-shaped backing member being united with the curved surface of the latter, whereby the linoleum is provided with an edge portion of curved contour, the surface of said edge portion being a continuation of the surface of said body portion and of the same texture.
8. The method of providing linoleum with a curved or bevelled edge which comprises forming a V-shapedrecess in the edge of the linoleum leaving integral with the body portion thereof a thin strip of linoleum adjacent the face 7 and a wedge-shaped projection adapted to serve as a backing for said thin face portion, and uniting the adjacent surfaces of the wedge-shaped projection and the thin face portion.
9. T he method of providing linoleum or the like with a curved or bevelled edge which comprises forming a recess in the linoleum adjacent the edge and back thereof leaving integral with the body portion a thin strip adjacent the edge and face, interfitting in said recess a wedge-shaped strengthening member adapted to serve as a backing for said thin face portion, and uniting the adjacent surfaces of the wedge-shaped strengthening member and the linoleum.
in testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
RALPH CORSON.
