This invention relates to a combination light bulb socket and supporting bracket suitable for side lamps of motor vehicles.
The chief object of this invention is to simplify, as well as reduce to a compact construction the light bulb socket and the supporting bracket therefor.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
In the drawings Fig- 1 is a central sectiona-l view through a side lamp including the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the combination socket and bracket. Fig.
3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 illustrates the blank embodying the major portion of the invention.
In the drawings 11 indicates a lamp casing with which is associated a door rim 10, a lens closure 9, a sealing ring 8 and a door and easing cooperating flange 7. The door and casing have an interlocking hinge type connection 6 and a detachable connection 5 for securing the door to the casing in lamp formation. The lamp casing may be suitably supported through the bracket 4.
Suitably secured to the interior of the cas ing 11 as by the rivets 13 there is an angular end 22 of a bracket 12, said rivets passing through the openings 23 therein. 12 indicates the bracket portion proper connected at one end to the angularly extending base 22 and at its opposite end terminating in two arcuately cross sectioned wings 18, which are connected to the bracket 12 at opposite sides of the same and are arranged diametrically opposite each other to form a semi-tubular bulb receiving socket. Each wing includes a bayonet slot 16 for mounting the lamp bulb 15 having the anchoring pins 24 and the central terminal 25. The tongues do not extend the full length of the bracket 12 but terminate in spaced relation to the base portion 22.
Each wing has its end adjacent said base turned inwardly to form the flange 14 and said flange, see Fig. 3, has an inner edge 26 concentric with the arcuate wing 18. The oppositely and inwardly directed flanges termlnate short of each other and provide a central clear space therebetween. Positioned in said central clear space is a current conductor 20 which terminates in an enlarged head 21 adapted to engage the light bulb central terminal 25. The conductor 20 is maintained in predetermined coaxial position relative to the wings and the flanges by the insulation washer 19. A coil spring 17 is interposed between said washer and said flanges and normally projects the contact 21 into light bulb terminal engagement.
The wings 18,-bracket 12 and base 22 are formed from a single substantially I-shaped sheet metal blank. One end is positioned angularly of the mid-portion to form the base. The lateral and wing portions of the opposite end are turned inwardly into semi-tubular formation, with inwardly directed flanges formed integral with the wing portions.
The invention claimed is:
A unitary bulb support comprising an I- shaped sheet metal member havlng one end" 1 arranged for support mounting, the opposite end having wings curved into tubular arrangement with an elongated appreciable opening therebetween, the inner ends of the wings being directed laterally and inwardly but terminating shortfof contact for forming a clear central opening, a coil spring mounted in the tubular arrangement and limited in one direction by'the wing lateral ends, an apertured Washer slidably mounted in the tubular arrangement and operatively engaging the opposite end of the spring, and an insulation covered current conductor extending through the central opening, the coil of the spring and the washer-aperture and having an exposed current conducting end arranged for washer retention, sald tubular arrangement including bayonet slots in spaced relation vfor bulb pin reception for lamp bulb mounting. 1
