and may be'especia-lly adapted to a press for riveting laminations such as poles for motors,
generators and the like; although it is equally adapted for riveting any kind of plates or- Iaminations: p 3: H
It is common practice in, riveting together laminations suchas thepoles for; largejmotors, generators andthe like, to clamp the laminations together by means of clamps and upset the rivets by hand or singly by a press.
Itvis present practiceto do such riveting with rivets having a head already formed upon one end before the rivets are inserted through the lamination's, the other end of,
the rivet being upset in the riveting operation. As a result,- one' endportionofeach rivet is not enlarged, by the upsetting, to fill the 'holes in the laminations. The object of the improvement isto provide a press of this character having, means for centeringthe rivets'through a pack of jlaminations whereby fixed amounts of each rivet may project beyond opposite sides of the packrof laminations, means being pro vided for pressing the laminations tightly together and separate means being provided same;

- With the press in the normal orinitial position, as shown in Fig. 2, a pack of laminations to be riveted, with the rivets located therethrough, is placedin position upon the lower insert plate 14, the rivets registering A fragmentary'portion of such pack of laminationsis shown at 42 in Figs. '3 and 4. The laminations' are provided with apertures '43 registering with each other'to receive the rivets44. r i As shown in Fig. 3, these apertures are slightly larger than the rivets, permitting them to be easily and readily inserted through the laminations by hand.
In placing these rivets through the laminations it isimpossible to accurately center each rivet through the laminations, that isto say, 'equalamounts of each rivet'do not ordinarily protrude from opposite sides of the pack of .laminations. l
, With the construction of press disclosed herein, this lack of uniformity of the amount of rivet projecting from each side of the laminations is compensated for. This is. accomplished by permitting movement of the ram caps 26 and 41Withrespect to the insert plates 14 and 31 respectively, and limiting the maximum movement between the ram caps and insert plates as by the shoulders 27 and 45 in the bolster and upper headrespectively.
V The distance between the top of the insert plate 14 and the shoulder 27 is constant and the distance between the bottom of the insert downward mov plate 31 and the shoulder 45 is constant.
These distances'must be equal where the heads to be formed at both ends of the rivets are the same. i V 7 Thus when the pack of laminations is placed upon 'th'e lower insert plate, in proper position as above described, and fluid admitted to the cylinders 7, the rams 8 will I raisethebolster 9, bringing thetopwot the ofthe pins 32, adapted tocontactwith the shoulders 35, in the upper ends of the open packet fla-minati'ons into" contact with the upper insert plate 31, sufucient pressure being i applied to clamp these laminations tightly together in the position shownin Fig. 3.

This'jis accomplished' by the lower rlveting pins 17 being forced downward against the lower ram cap 26 which rests upon the shoul-' der '27, while the upperriveting pins 32 5 will be forced upward, raising the upper ramcap 41 until it contacts with the shoulder-45.- v

I The movement of these rams forces-thermeting pins 17' upwardand the riveting-pins 132downward, riveting heads '37 upon {the rivets 44 as illustrated in Fig. 4.
Allof'these heads-upon the rivets will'be of uniform size and shape, being formed from an equal-amount of metal and. furthermore, the rivets- 44 will be shortened and slig'htly"enlarged in diameter, causing the same to tightly fit within the openings 43 in I thelamina'tions asillustratedinFig: 4. The pressure is then released from-all of :thel'cylinders and the parts permittedto return tothe normal position'when' the riveted packet laminations may be removed from the press. v v k w i From the above, it will beobvious that a plurality ,of rivets besimultaneously centered and riveted, clamping the laminations together in a single operation of thje improved press.
Although the press is' illustrated and de-. scribed as a vertical press with the bolster andrams running vertically, it should be 'understoodthat the inventionis not limited to a vertical press, but thattheentire press may be located in a horizontal. or other position without departing from the spirit or sacriticing any of the advantages of the invention. a I
- It. should also beunderstoodthat'the press is applicable'to'the riveting of any'number' of platesor laminations of any thickness and"-;
shape, and of any material,metallio'0r nonmetallic.
Although the press as illustrated is adapted to form similar heads upon each end of the rivet, it should be understood that in case it is desirable to form heads of different. .size or shape at opposite ends to the. rivet,
this may be accomplished by so spacing the shoulders 27 and 45, with reference tothe respective insert plates, that the desired amount of each'r vet will protrude through each side of the pack of laminations.
