This invention relates to a hat box. The objectof the invention is the production of a box or container adapted to hold a ladys hat with other articles and protect them from injury by crushing, and maintain them clean and dry. The second object of the invention is the production of a box or container, which can be easily opened and which can be used as a traveling case. The third object of the invention is the production of a hat box, in which a hat can be securely and detachably located in place. The fourth object of the invention is the production of a container of which a portion can be detached to increase the carrying capacity thereof, when used as a traveling bag. .The 'fifth objectof the invention is the production of a dust proof box or container.

The box or container in this exemplifioation is indicated to comprise the cup shaped body portion 20 preferably of metal, having the upper edge 21. The body portion 20 is fastened to the disc 22 preferably of metal. by solder or screws not shown. A'plurality of latch springs 23, extend fro-m the inner face of the cup-shaped body portion 20. The cup-shaped body portion 20 is preferably provided with a cover 25 of leather fastened to its-outer surface and a lining 26 of fabric is fastened to its inner surface. A plurality of curved panels 36, preferably of met-a1, having tapering longitudinal side edges 37, lower edges 38, and curved peak ends 39, arehinged to the upper edge 21 of the body portion 20, by means of hinges. Each of said hinges comprises the member 40 having the end hinge portions 41 and42 and the member 43 having the central hinge portion 4%. 'The hinge portion 4% has extending therefrom the-stop 4.5 and the hinge portion 41 has projecting therefronrthe stop 46.

Each of the panels 36 has fastened to its] outer surface a cover 50 preferably of leather and to its inner face is fastened a cover 51 preferably of fabric. To the inner face of each of the panels 36 is connected a pocket 52 of fabric and the like'with the upper open end 53. r v

- At the upper end of one ofthe panels 36 is fastened the cup-shaped hood 55 by means of therivets 56. A thimble 57 is fastened to the lower faceof the hood 55, by means of solder or other means. The lower openend of said thimble. is threaded for the nut 58. The" crown of thimble is threaded for the screw 59 having the round head 60 at its lower end. The screw 59 extends through the threaded opening in the crown of thethimble 57 andthecrown of the hood 55 and to its upper end is fastened the inverted cup-shaped cap '6l.1 From thecrown of'the cap 61 ex-- tends the operatinghandle 62. Referring to Figs. and 8 in place of the separable fasteners 68 the accompanying edges of the panels may overlap each other when in their closed position and fastened by the ordinary snap fasteners comprising the male members and the female members To use the hat box or container, a hat may be located on the hat support 28, and the disengaged from the latch springs 23. In the latter case the box or container provides a large space to have easily located therein clothing or other objects.

The hat box or container is then closed by first swinging up the panel 36 carrying the cup-shaped hood 55, and then the otherpanels .36 are swung up with their peak ends bearing on the hood 55. Next the user fastens the longitudinal edges of the panels 36 to each other by pulling up the sliders 69 on the separable fasteners 68, or engages the male members 85 and the female members 86 of the snap fasteners. By this means the curved peak ends 39 of the panels 36 are automatically seated on the cup-shaped hoodv55. Next the user turns the operating handle 62, and thereby the cap 61 is lowered and pinches the said curved peakends 39 between the cap 61 and the hood 55. By this means a waterproof and dust proof hat box or container is provided.

Various modifications may be made in the invention and the present exemplification is to be taken as illustrative and not limitative thereof.

Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is: 1. In a container the combination ofa body portion, panels having longitudinal edges, lower edges and peak ends, the lower edges of the panels hinged to said body portion in positions to locate the longitudinal edges of the panels adjacent to each other, fasteners along the adjacent edges of the'panels, an element connected to the peak e-ndof one of the panels and means to clamp the peak ends of the other panels to said element.

2. In a container the combination of a body portion, panels having tapering longitudinal edges, lower edges and peak ends, the lower edges of the panels hinged to said body portion, means to detachably connect the longi tudinal edges of the panels to each other, a cup-shaped hood connected to one of the panels at its peak end, a cap, a screw extending from said cap in threaded engagement with said cup-shaped hood and adapted to pinch the peak ends of the panels between said hood and cap.

3. In a container the combination of a body portion, panels having longitudinal edges, lower edges and peak ends, the lower edges of the panels hinged to said body portion, means to detachably connect the longitudinal edges of the panels to each other, a hood connected to one of the panels at its peak end and means to pinch the peak ends .of the panels to said hood.

In a container the combination of a body portion, panels having longitudinal edges, lower edges and peak ends, the lower edges of the panels hinged to said body portion, means to detachably connect the longitudinal edges of the panels to each other, a hood connected to one of the panels at its peak end, a movable cap positioned over said hood, and means toposition said cap to pinch the peak ends of the panels between it and said hood.

5. In a container the combination of a body portion, a hat support detachably connected within the said body portion, panels having longitudinal edges, lower edges and peak ends, the lower edges of the panels hinged to said body portion, means to detachably connect the longitudinal edges of the panels to each other, a hood connected to one of the panels at its peak end, a movable cap positioned over said hood, means to position said cap topinch the peak end of the panels between it and said hood, and means to suspend the container extending from said panels.
