Application filed June 20,
My invention relates to reservoirs or likej a packing of a plastic like material preformed to a strip having opposite sides arranged at an angle to each other so as to form a. Wedge shaped strip and providing these sides with means adapted to interlock with the adjacent structure.
- In the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a cross section of my preformed packing and Fig. 2
is a cross section of a reservoir, swimming pool or other construction showing my preformed packing arranged between adjacent blocks of concrete. In the drawings, 1 is my packing which as shown has sides 2, 2 arranged at an angle to each other so as to provide a' wedgeslike form to the packing. This packing is made in any desired length. The sides 2, 2 are preferably broken as shown by longitudinal grooves 3, 3 separatedby projections 4, 4. This packing is made so that it will be wider at the top as shown than at the base. 5 is an opening which may, if desired, beplaced in' thepacking for the purpose of reducing its weight or a reinforcing member 6 may be passed through theopening. This opening 5 and reinforcing "member 6 however, areznot essential but may-be in some conditions desirable. The
grooves 3, '3 may be of'any desired contour, but I prefer; to have them extend longitudinally along eachfsideof the packing, This is likewise true of the projections or tongues 4. If desired, the projections or tongues 4 could extend beyondthe gline of thesides of the top and base of thepacking,'or they could bear-ranged at an angle to the. sides other than as shown; 1 In Fig. 2 I have shown a sectionof a reservoir, swimming pool or similar construction in which my packing is p shown between two adjacent slabs '7 ofcon-. I prefer to install" my: packing by.
crete. I placing the packing 1 in position and pouring the concrete 7 on each side'of it untll the desired quantity has been poured.
- slabs of concrete orthelike to form a water- 1927. Serial noraoaoaal I will beseen this permits the concrete tolntenthe spaces 3 between the tongues and form .011 the concrete corresponding tongues or projections extending into the spaces?) be-.' tween the tongues ,4 of the packing so as to. interlockthe packing 1' with the concrete blo 7-.
j In installing y packingjl, I, do "ruse that a the top orghead 8iwl1ich has a greater'area {than the lower side 9 of the base will be sub- ,stantially'on a line with thecorrespondingsurface of the upper side of the concrete block 7. In this construction it will be seen that the spaces 3 and the projections l arrangedv longitudinally of the packing 1 form with the similar spaces and projections on. the concreteobstructions tothe passage or seepage of, water or moisture and 'in addition thepressure ofthe water on the top of the packing v8 tends to press s ain-e down firmly against-the adjacent portions. of the concrete block 7 and likewise preventpas sageorseepage of water'between the packing 1 and the concrete blocks 7;
- M ira kine s pref a mad (if a bite? minous material containing a fibrous filler,
although other fillers could if desired be used. It will be seen thatthelongitudinal spaces and pro-jectionsor corrugations on the sides of my packing form numerous obstructions to the passage or seepage of water, and likewise form many points of'contact with the concrete whichzwill become sealed by virtue of the adhesion of h cr to 1 the packing 1. This adhesion may be facilitated by the application tothe sides ofthe packing 1 of any suitable bituminous or other adhesive if desired. 1 1
Claims: 1. A preformed packing forruse between proof expansion joint, said packing compris inga body of plastic water-proof material having sides arranged at ananglet o each I other and portions of said sides arranged in alternate tongues andgrooveshaving sides lying in a plane substantially parallel to1the= directionot' expansion and contraction of the slabsto and away from the packing.
2 In a reservoir wall or like construction,
rec
a preformed packing composed of a strip of plastic water-proof material having sides arranged at an angle toveach other so that the edge exposed to the water side of the structure is of greater area than the opposite edge and means on the side of said preformed packing adapted to form keys for' interlocking with adjacent construction.
3. A preformed packing for use between two bodies having relative movement to and away fromeach other, comprising a strip of bituminous materialand a suitable filler, f,
said packing strip having sides of greater surface area than the edges, said sides being arranged at an angle to each other so that the exposed edge of saidpacking strip is of greater area than the opposite edge, a portion'of each side of said packing being composed of areas in substantially the same plane and other portions of said sides com- I I I posed of areas of appreciable extent arranged A indifferent planes. extending generally in the direction of-said relative movement so as to provide locking means for interlocking vwith the adjacent structure through surfaces engaging along lines parallel tothe direction of said relative movement.
' 4:. A preformedpacking for use between two bodies having relative movement to and away'fro-m each other,-co1nprising a strip of plastic water-proof material having sides arranged at an angle to eachother so that the exposed edge of said packing strip is of greater area than the opposite edge and means on the side of said preformed packing adapted to form a key for interlocking with adj acent' construction.
In testimony HOMER rRoGERs;
whereof, I have signed my i name to this specification.
