The object of this invention is to provide a soldered can top which may be removed without the use of a tool of an character, the c'ap or top being provided with a handle formed lin the special manner indicated sion, normally folded o ver 'the cap per se,
but adapted to be liftedy by the -use of the lingers of the individual openingl the can, so that it will form a handle of a type permitting of the ap lication of sullicient force to tear the cap om the annular member, along the line where the solder was applied. Withthe foregoing'and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the ,claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this application, t
s Figure 1 is a view in vertical section showin the upper portion .of a can with the particu ar top disclosed herein.
Figure 2 is a top lan view, the outer series of dotted lines indicating the points' at which the solder is applied, and the inner series indicating a down turned flange, permitting of the use of the handle by inserting the fingers. therethru, without danger of 'injuringthe latter on a sharp edge ofthe handle member.
Figure 3 shows the construction of Figure 40 2, in plan, a portion of the cap having been removed by lifting the handle and producing tension thereon.
The wall of a metallic can is vdesignated 10, and an 'annular'member constituting the outer portion of the top and the permanent portion Athereof includes an outer down-i wardly extending fiange 11, a channel portion 12, and an upwardlyI extending flange `13, the top of which will be-turned over or provided with sufficient bearing surface to 6o permit of the proper application of the detachable top. 1 l
The top or cap perse is designated 15, and is to be soldered to the portion 13 along the dotted line or lines 16 of Figures 2 and 3, 55 and this is the point or line where the tearing or. detaching operation is ell'ected.
A handle for the cap l5 is desi y ated 18, and may be of any suitable form, t t shown Vin'Figures 2 and 3' being desirable, and this 60 element is provided with an opening 19 surrounded by a flange 20, the latter providing a convenient ipping surface. The normal-position of the handle is that shown in Figure 1 or Fi re 2, and when the 65 can is to be opened, the andle is lifted, and suicient force applied to sever the elements 15 and 13 along the dotted lines 16. The blank 'of which the top is formed would therefore include a wide portion 18, a wide 'lo ortion 15, and a narrow neck portion 18.
e tearing operation is commenced at the cutaway portion 22, and then continues laterally in each direction, as tension is applied to the handle.
What is claimed is: y A can top comprising an'annular member having a centrall arranged opening of considerable size an said member havin the outer rtion thereof bent angularly an v upon itse f to form spaced connected grip-`V Iping flanges to receive the open end 'of a can and having the flanges secured thereto, said member having the inner portion bent angularly in the same direction with the outer angular portion and having the free N edge thereof broadened to form a seat spaced from the annular member, a closure deisk resting on said seat and solderedtherejzo for closing the central opening of the member and the vopen end of the can and'to'permit se eration of said disk from the member `w en placed under sufficient strain to o n Ithe can `a hand gri connected to one e. e
of the disk by a re uced neck and normal y dsgosedover the disk by bending the neck, sai grip having a centrally' arranied opening to ermit a rsons fingers to e passed throng said grip and the latter having the inner edge thereof curved relatively thereto to form a comfortable finger engaging poion' h `f1 mit' I Y n testimony w ereo la m signature.
