IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ERASER-HOLDERSAND PENClL-POINT PROTECTORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,882, dated June 20, 1876; application filed April '22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEVEDRA B. SHELDON,

' of the city, county, and State of New York,

' which the eraser can be covered and protected from dirt when not in use, and of which the point-protecting tube shall be capable of application to a wider range of sizes than those now made, without interfering with the holding of the rubber.

In the eraser-holders and point-protectors now made the eraser is at all times uncovered, and it very soon gets so dirty that itsoils the paper, so that it takes more time to rub off the dirt than to erase the pencil-marks, and at best the paper is more or less soiled, and besides the eraser looks bad.

I therefore propose to fit the eraser in a socket, closed at, one end, and constructed separately from the point-protecting tube, but so fitted to one end of the same that either end of it may be inserted to enable the eraser to be attached to the tube with the erasing end projecting when it is to be used, and with said end inclosed whennot in use, and as the split or slitted end of the point-protecting tube to which the socket is attached must fit nicely on the socket, and be unafiected by the spring of the other slitted end, in which the pencil fits, I make a slit ineach end-one for the socket, and the other for the pencil-instead of making one slit all the way, leaving an unslitted portion, which prevents the springing or extending of one end by extending the other; and I also propose to re-enforce the said unslitted portion by an offset, or by a ring or ,band, either or both, fitted on it to insure greater stiffness, and to prevent splitting through the unslitted portion.

The eraser J is fitted in the socket D, instead of directly in the part B of the tube, as heretofore, so that, when not required for use, it can be concealed in the tube by taking-out the socket and reversing it to protect it-t'rom soil- The erasermay be secured in the socket by expanding into a groove, a, formed by a rib, b, raised on the outside to form a shoulder to limit the extent of the entrance of the socket in the tube. It may also be secured by screwthreads cut or otherwise formed in the end of the socketsay, a 'spiral row of indentations, 0. The offset H in the tube, which adds strength to the unslitted portion, also enables a larger eraser to be used than can be in a tube the size of the. pencil, which is desirable, and the ofi'set is somewhat ornamental.
