Description

B. S. LEWIS `Fan. 13, 1931.
HINGE Filed June 15, 1928 Patented Jan. 13, 1931 ..UNITED srATss PATEN T? OFFICE Bear-rons. LEwxsfor NEW nnn'am, coNNEorIoUr; AssIGNoR 'ro 'run STANLEY WOR/KS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNEGTICUT,
,A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT HINGE Application flled June 15,
This invention relates to hinges and, particularly, to hinges of the sort adapted to pivotally support va leaf, lid or cover, such, for example, as the 'leaf orV lid of a desk, cabinet 'or `the like. My improved hlnge, While having general ap lication, is particularly adapted for use in ingedly supporting a leaf or closure which,-when in open condition, is substa-ntially in a horizontal plane.
The aim of the presentinvention is to provide a hinge of this sort which is very simple in construction, which may be cheaply manufactured, which may be readily assembled andl applied, and Which is relatively strong.
. In accordance with the present invention,
\ thehinge is made of two identical leaves,
each of the. leaves being of such shape that it may economically made by stam ing out a blank from sheet metal, the leaves aving such relationto one another when assembled that the pivot connecting the leaves is relieved, to a large extent, of lateral strains.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out more in detail hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended' claims.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein I have shown, for illustrative purposes,
t one embodiment which the present invention may take:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hinge in open condition;
Fig. 2 is a forward edge view of the hinge inopen condition;
Fig. 3 is an' edge view of the hinge in closed condition;
Fig. 4 is a leaves; and
Fig. 5 is a side view of the hinge in closed condition.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved hin e is composed of two leaves A and B pivotal y connected by a pin or rivet C. It may be assumed, for purposes of example, that the leaf A is secured to the body perspective view of the hinge 1928. serial No. 285,697.
ofthe cabinet or desk at the side of the openingin the front thereof, and that the leaf B is connectedI to the end edge of the cover or lid whichis adapted to be swung from an open horizontal position to a closed vertical position. It Will be evident, however, as the description proceeds, that either of the leavesmay be connected to the body portion. and the other one to the lid or cover.
Each leaf of the hinges is, stated, preferably formed from sheet metal by stamping out a blank of the desired configuration. Each leaf has, at its pivoted end, a lug which, When -the hinge is in the open position shown in Fig. 1, engages in abutment on the other leaf. The lugs are designated by the numeral 11 and the abutments by the numeral 12. In the present illustrative dis-. closure, the lugs 11 are at the extreme pivoted ends of the leaves and extend from one side edge of the leaf to short of the longitudinal medial line thereof. The end 13`of each lug forms a shoulder Which is adapted to engage an abutment 12. The other side edge of the leaf, adjacent the pivot, is recessed or stepped 'as at 14 so as to provide the shoulder or abutleaf at the side of the lug 11 is curved or rounded, as at 15.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that my improved hinge comprises two identical parts, and the-hinge may be used' either on the left hand side or the right hand side of the member to be pivotally supported.
Each leaf. may be formed by stamping from a sheet of metal a Vblank with one end formed to provide a tab, which tab may then be turned up at right angles so as to constitute the lug 11. When the hinge is in closed or folded ppsition, as .shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the lugs are in alignment with one another and 'within the confines of the side edges of the leaves. When the hinge is open, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the active end 13 of, each lug 11 engages against the abutment or as previously,
shoulder 12 of the other leaf. The horizontal leaf B is then in the form of a level, so to sgeak. The enalgement of each lug against t e other leaf its the extent of o ning movement of the hinge and, due to t is engagement, lateral or shearing strains on the pivot. pin or fulcrum are considerably reduced.
As many changes could be made in the 1o above construction and ,many a parently vvidely different embodiment's of t is invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or 15 shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitin sense.
t is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover-all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
- I claim as my invention:
1. A hinge of the character described comprising a pair of identical leaves in the form of strips, and a pin pivotally connecting said leaves, each of said leaves havin at its ivso oted end a laterally 'extending ug an an abutment to op site sides of said pin.
2. A hinge o the character described comprisin a pair of identical leaves, and a rivet ivota ly connecting said leaves, each of said 38 eaves having on its pivoted end a lateral lug extending from one side edge of the leaf to a point ad] acent the medial line thereof, each of said leaves having in its other edge a recess with a shoulder with Which the lug of the 40' other leaf enga es when thefhinge is o en.
3, A hinge o the character describe comprising a pair of identical leaves, each com- Eosed of a flat, thin strip of metal, and each aving at its edge an integral outwardly bent projecting portlon constituting a laterally extending lug, said leaves engaging flat-wise against each other when the hinge is closed and the pivoted leafebeing adapted to swing in the plane of its width, and a pivot member pivotally connecting said leaves, the lug of each leaf pro'ecting into the plane of the other leaf an being adapted to en age the edge of the other eaf when the inge is opened.
