SPRING DOQR CLOSER Filed Aug. 29. 1929 Charles Patented Jan. 6 1 931 CHARLES iKUcHAUsxAs, or wn'rnapunr, conirnca'iicu iii;
SPRING noon cposnn i :f '1;
Application filed August 29, 1929. Serial No. 389,191.
This invention relates to spring door closers and is directed more particularly to a device of this character which is intended primarily for-returning a double swinging 5 door or gate to normal or closed position.
' The primary object of the present invention is to provide a spring door closer which shall be particularly simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture and which shall be easy to install.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which shall be readily adaptable.
to various types of installations and which shall be equally effective in each instance.
With these and other objects'in view the invention may be stated to consist in the various novel features of construction and arrangement or combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out'in the appended claims;
In the drawing accompanying and form-' ing part of this application, Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation ofa fence and gate fitted with a device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan =viewthereof;
Fig. 3 is sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig.2; 1 Y v V Fig. 4; is a fragmentary side elevation of a fence and gate fitted with amodified form of my invention; and p Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. i v
Referring particularly to Fig-s. 1- 3 inclusive, a spring door closer constructed in accordance withmy' invention comprises a' pair ofbase plates 10, 10 which are interconnected by a coil spring 11. Eachbase plate is formed [with suitableapertures to receive screws 12 or other fastening means formounting'the device. The adjacent or inner end of each base plate isformed with a pair of upstanding ears 1 13, 13 which maybe conveniently formed by. bending the metal of the-base plate at right angles. Suitable lugs 14 are provided on the ears by slitting themetal and bending it in circular shape about a convolution of the spring. A slmilar lug 15 is also formed between the cars 13 and these lugs serve to secure the spring to the base plates.
In use, the ate 16 or other closure memher is mounted onsuitable double swinging hinges 17. The spring hinge is mounted between the gate and its support 18, as for it example on the top thereof as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The spring 11 will flex as the gate swings in eitherdirection and always return it to normal or closed position. In Figs. 4 and 5 Ihave shown a slightly modified form. of my invention which is adapted for mounting where the surface of the gate and the surface of the support therefor are not disposed in the same plane. In; this form the base plate 10 and coil spring 11 are'identical with those described above. Secured to the opposite end of coilspring 11 is a bracket 20 which is preferably formed of sheet metal and provided with depressions 21. to receive a convolution of the spring 11. Suitable apertures are formed in the bracket for the reception of screws 22 or other suitable fastening means. In this form of my invention it will'be noted that thebase plate 10? and bracket 20 are arranged for mounting on surfaces disposed at right angles to each without departinglfrom its spirit. In short,
the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of y the following claims. a
Having thus fully described the invention,
whatis claimedas new, and for which it is I desired to secureLetters Patent, is: .1. A devlce of the character described comprising a pair of base members arranged 1n zontal coil spring, aportion of the metal of each of said base members being bent about a convolution ofv said spring to secure them together.
r spaced relation and interconnected by a hori- 2. A device of the charcat er described comprising a pair of base members arranged in. p p
spaced relation, each Y of said base mem bers having an upstanding portion provided withlugs, and a coil spring interconnecting said'base members and having the end con- -vo1utionsengaged in said lugs, said base e members being adapted to be attached to a hinged member and a supporting frameat a in oppositely alined positions.
In testimon'y whereof, I have afiixed my signature to this specification.
