Description

Jan 1931- y A. o. SAMUELS ET AL 4 KNIFE SHARPENER Filed Aug. 16, 1928 INVENTCSRS Abe O. Samuel-s ibez'rATToRNY Patented Jan. 6, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT ioFFI'c-E ABE o. SAMUELS AND GEORGE ADAMS, or ROCHESTER, new on-K; SAID. ADAMSFAS- srenoa T SAID SAMUELS e KNIFE SHARPENER Application filed August 16, 1928. Serial No. 300,040.
The invention relates to a knife sharpener, of the general type employing a plurality of overlapping rotatable sharpening disks be tween the intersection of the peripheries of which a knife is drawn, and it has for its primary object to afford a simple construction that can be manufactured economically and is efficient in operation. v
A further purpose of the invention'is to provide a structure requiring few parts which can be easily assembled and sold at a reasonable price.
Still an additional purpose of the invention is to afford a durable, sturdy construction which can be readily operated and'still give dependable service indefinitely.
To these ends, the invention consists in the form and arrangement of parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims following the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife sharp ener constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is aside elevation looking in the opposite direction from Figure 1, with the handle removed;
Figure 8 is a sectional view on line 33 of Figure 1 Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4% of s Figure 2;
Figure 5 1s a sectional View on line 5-5 of 5 Figure 2;
. Figure 6 1s a sectional view online 66 of Figure 2, and c Figure 7 is a side elevation showing the application 'of the invention when used for removing a bottle cap.
Referring morejparticularly to the drawings, in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, the structure comprises a housing consisting of two opposite walls preferably of sheet metal, which are circularly embossed, as
indicated at land2, the edges of said walls being in juxtarelation, as shown at 3 and 4' respectively. The housing Jreferably has the disk retaining pockets em ossedtherein,
although the housing may be otherwise formed with the edges of the opposite walls in contact and the main portions spaced from each other to afford disk retaining pockets. land 6 designate two rotatable sharpening disks, preferably of metal, the inner edges of which overlap, as shown in Figures 1 and 3.
The disk 5 is located in the embossed portion 2, the outer edge of the disk being-retained between the inner surface of such embossed portion and the shoulder 7 on the opposite wall, while the outer edge of disk 6 is retained between theinner surface of the embossed portion 1- and the shoulder, 8 on the opposite wall, asshown in Figure 3.
The side walls are cut away at9, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to afford a recess exposing the point of intersection between the disks and permitting access of a knife thereto, and adjacentjsaid recess the walls are indented at 10 and11 to prevent'movement of the disks inthat direction, the disks being thus held in cooperative relation entirely by the pockets of the'housing cooperating with the peripheries of the disks andwithout any supporting means at the centers of the disks. The recesses 9 in the side walls of the housing are preferably of such form that the opposite vedges of the housing bounding such recess may be used toremove a bottle cap in the manner shown in Figure 7. e.
The side walls of the housing also include angularly arranged shank portions, the outer ends of which lie adjacent to each other as indicated at 12;, One of said shank portions is provided with an opening while the other has a correspondingly formed collar 13 engaging said opening to aline the shank portions and prevent relative lateral movement thereof. Separation of the shank portions of the housing or 'walls is prevented when the structureris assembled, by means of the handle 14: which maybe of any conventional form, the shank being driven into the handle as usual" in this class of structure and as shownin Figure 1. The outer ends of the wallsof the housing are held together by any suitable means, ,and in the construction shown such means consists of a rivet 15 engaglng the outer surface of the =hous1ng the sharpening disk 5. It will be understood Walls and passing through an opening 16 in that the Opening in the disk 5 is only to accommodate the rivet 15 Which does not support the disk, the latter being held in place entirely by the form of the housing and its contact with its cooperating disk; r
While the invention has been described Withreference to a particular embodiment,
it is not'limited to the precise details herein disclosed, and this application is intendedto coversuch modifications or departures as.
may come Within the intent ofthe improvement as herein set forth or the scope of the following claims. r
We claim: 7
1. A knife sharpener comprising an elongated housing formed of opposite Walls, each ofsaid Walls being circularly embossed to form tWo substantially circular disk retaining pockets and engaging each other at their edges around the out-er peripheries r of said pockets, a sharpening disk in each of said pockets, one arranged in contact With each of said ,Walls and free from the other of said walls so that they overlap each other at their edges and are freely rotatable in said 7 pockets, and indentations in said Walls for retaining the disks in said pockets.
2. A knife sharpener comprising an elongated housing formed of opposite alls, each of said allsbeing circularly embossed to form two substantially circular disk retaining pockets and engaging each other a at their edges around the outer peripheries of said pockets, a sharpening disk in each of said pockets,'one arranged in cont'actwith each of said Walls and free from the other of said Walls so that they overlap each other at their edges and are freelyrotatable in said pockets, and means arrangedin an enlarged opening in one of said disks for securing said Walls to each other.
In Witness whereof, We have hereunto signed our names.
ABE O. SAMUELS.
