UNlTED STATES EDWARD IF. NIEDECKEN, OF'MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN,
DRAIN CONNECTION Application filed February 20, 1928.
I lhis invention relates to an improvement in drain fittings especially designed and adapted for use with all metal shower stalls, although also adapted for advantageous use with various types of tanks, tubs, basins, or other receptacles.
Metal shower stalls and other receptacles of a similar nature having an outlet opening through which the water or the like drains 10 and the proper connection of this outlet opening to a drain pipe or olitake pipe has presented a problem that is a source of considerable ditliculty, annoyance and expense. It has been proposed to secure a drain fitting to the stall or other receptacle around the outlet opening, the drain fitting being of annular form and being threadedly connected or otherwise appropriately secured to the oil'- take pipe or to a coupling member connected 2 to such a pipe. With this construction, however, water finds its way into the interstice between the annular body of the drain fitting and the adjacent portion of the shower stall and sets up corrosion which breaks down the structure of the shower stall around the drain opening. As these shower stalls are built into the structure of the building in which they are provided itis impossible to get to the drain fitting unless the stall is torn out of the building.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a drain fitting which is so organized with the shower stall as to preclude any possibility of a shower stall becoming corroded or broken down around the drain opening.
Another object is to provide a device of this character and having these advantages and capacities and which is of simple and dur- 46 able construction, reliable and efiective in operation and easy and comparatively ineXpensive to manufacture and apply.
In carrying out the present invention a drain fitting is provided which consists of an annular body fitted flush up against the underside ot the shower stall or the like around the outlet thereof.j A weld is provided between the periphery of the annular body and the underside of the shower stall which se- 50 cures the drain fitting to the shower stall and Serial No. 255,717.
closes the interstice between the shower stall and the drain fitting around the outer periphery of the drain fitting. In addition, means is provided for sealing the interstice between the drain fitting and the shower I stall all around the entrance to this interstice located at the marginal wall of the outlet opening. This sealing meansmay consist of a weld between the marginal wall of the outlet opening and the drain fitting or it may take any other appropriate form.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combinationof parts which will behereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to v the accompanyingdrawing forming a part of this specification, and in which:
The figure is a fragmentary sectional View 76 showing'a fragment of a receptacle such as a shower stall, tank, basin, tub, or the like, equipped with a drain fitting embodying the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a portion of the bottom of a show er stall, or the like, and, as shown, it is formed with an outlet or discharge opening 2. A drain fitting is provided for the opening 2 and comprises an annular body 3 having an so outwardly directed peripheral flange 4. The drain fitting is fitted flush upagainst the tin derside of the bottom of the shower stall and has a portion lapping the outlet opening and a portion lapping the structure of the shower s5 stall around the outlet opening. Between the periphery of the flange l and the adjacent structure of the shower stall a weld 5 is provided, this weld 5 extending entirely around the circumference of the flange 4t and serving to secure the fitting to the shower stall and to close the space or interstice between the drain fitting and the shower stall around the outer periphery of the drain fit ting.
An annular groove 6 of V-shape in cross section is provided in the drain fitting and partially underlies the bottom of the shower stall and partially underlies the outlet opening 2 formed therein. In this groove 6 means is provided for sealing the interstice or space between the drain fitting and the shower stall around the margin of the outlet opening. This means may consist of a weld 7 filling the groove 6 and uniting the structure of the drain fitting to the marginal portion of the outlet opening 2 or it may consist of a filling of cement in the groove 6 which also secures or welds the drain fitting to the shower stall structure and seals the interstice between the drain fitting and the shower stall around the entire margin of the outlet opening. By thus completely sealing the interstice between the drain fitting and the shower stall any ingress or accumulation of moisture in the interstice or crevice between the fitting and the receptacle is prevented and all possibility of corrosion of the shower stall or other reccotacle is precluded. Moreover, the structure of the shower stall or other receptacle around the outlet opening is strengthened and reinforced.
The portion of the drain fitting which laps the outlet opening 2 provides a seat for a strainer 9.
The invention claimed is:
1. A drain fitting for the outlet 03 a receptacle comprising an annular body fitted fiush against the receptacle around the outlet opening and having an outwardly projecting peripheral flange, a weld between the outer periphery of the fiange and the receptacle, said body having a portion lapping the outlet opening and providing a strainer seat, said body also having an annular groove underlying the margin of the outlet opening, and means in the groove for sealing the interstice between the margin of the outlet opening and the body of the drain fitting.
2. A drain fitting "for the outlet of an all metal shower stall comprising a ring-like body fitted flush against the shower stall around the outlet opening thereof, an endless weld uniting the entire outer periphery of the body and the shower stall, said body having a portion lapping the outlet opening and adapted to provide a strainer support, and an endless weld unitin the entire margin of the outlet opening and the entire adjacent circumt'erential portion of the ring-like body inwardly of the strainer support.
3. A drain fitting for the outlet of an all metal shower stall comprising a ring-like body fitted flush against the shower stall around the outlet opening thereof, an endless weld uniting the entire outer periphery of the body and the shower stall, said body having an endless groove therein located immediately adjacent to and para leling the margin of the outlet opening, and an endless weld uniting the entire margin of the outlet open ing and the wall of the groove.
In witness whereof, I hereto afiiX my signature.
