Description

Dec. 16, 1930.
N. D MURRAY BLOTTER HOLDER Filed Oct. 26, 1929 N fiudlog y arm/aw urra WITNESSES Q6.
ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 16, 1930 NORMAN DUDLEY MURRAY, 01 DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA BLOTTER HOLDER Application filed October 26, 1929, Serial No. 402,734, and in Canada August 16, 1929.
My invention relates to blotter holders and an object thereof is to provide a device of this character which may be attached to the writers hand so that the blotter will always be available for use. p
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character embodying a sheet metal holder for a length of blotting paper and manually releasable clamping means cooperating with the holder in retaining the blotting sheet thereon. With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in j the novel combination of elements, construc- 16 tions and arrangements of parts and operations to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective of my improved v blotter holder, the clamping member being illustrated in released position in broken lines;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device;
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the same;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line H of Fig. 3.
Referring to the invention in detail a substanti ally rectangular plate or holder preferably fashioned from sheet metal is provided. The longitudinal edges of the plate 5 is provided with upstanding parallel flanges 6 and 7 whose upper edges are rolled to provide cylindrical beads 8 which extend substantially the entire length of the plate. In practice a, length of. blotting paper 10 extends over the under face of the plate 5 and has its longitudinal end portions extended upwardly around the heads 8 and its extremities positioned on the upper face of the plate. In
order to clamp the blotting sheet in place a substantially U-shaped bail 15 formed from a length of rod is provided. The extremities of the rod-are formed with right angularly extendinginwardly directed pintles 16 which are rotatably received in the ends of one of the beads 8. The free I end of the bail is adapted to resiliently engage flange 6 to clamp one end of the blotting sheet between a the same and the bail For this purpose the 'bail is rendered laterally expansible by the formation of oppositely extending V-shaped spring members 16a fashioned in the opposite sides of the bail. Thus when the bail is swung downwardly its free end will engage the flange 6 and resiliently clamp the adjacent end of the blotting sheet against the same.
In order to clamp the opposite extremity of the blotting sheet a clamping rod 17 extends longitudinallyover the plate adjacent the flange 7 and is provided. with eyes 18 which are secured about the bail 15 adjacent the pintles 16. It will be observed that the clamping rod 17 is offsetdownwardly from the pintles 16 so that the rod will engage the blotting sheet.
In order to hold the device on the wearers hand an elastic strap 19. extends transversely of the upper face of the plate at its center and has one end permanently secured to the rod 17 as designated at 20. The opposite end of the band is engaged by the free end of the bail. Thus tension may be always maintained in the strap due to the fact that the latter has only one end permanently secured.
A transversely bowed finger rest 20 extends transversely of the plate directly beneath the strap 19 and is formed with extensions 22 terminating in lateral feet which are riveted or otherwise secured to the plate as at 24.
In use the hand is received between the strap 19 and fingerrest 21, with the strap underlyingthe palm of the hand and the fingerre'st embracing several of the fingers. Thus the device will be always attached to one hand of the writer so that upon reversal of the position of the hand the blotting sheet Y may be brought into position for use. The transverse edges of the plate 5 may be employed to sever paper and for this purpose these edges are formed with teeth or serrations 25. i
