As will be understood, the upper handle --is raised to the position it occupies in Figure 1 to lower the jaw member and then the parts are placedundera spring. As before stated, this device forms an efficient tool for the compression of valve springs, and the parts are held. in adjusted position with the spring lifted by the arrangement of the roller and slots so that it is not necessary to hold the tool, after it has been adjusted to lift the spring. The spring acts as a lock for the jaws and the jaws are so constructed as to always remain on an even angle.
It is thought tion that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of" the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

A device of the class described comprising upper and lower handles, an upright fastened to the lower handle intermediate its ends and to which the upper handle is pivoted an appreciable distance from one end, this end of the upper handle having slots therein, a roller having its ends passing through the slots, a jaw member pivoted to the uprights and having a slot therein through which the roller passes.

A device of the class described comprising upper and lowerarms, each formed of a strip of material bent into loop shape, uprights connected with the limbs of the lower arm intermediate the ends thereof, a pin passing through the upper ends of the uprights and through the limbs of the upper handle from the foregoing descripan appreciable distance from the extremities of the limbs, said extremities having slots therein, a roller having its ends passing through the slots, washers on the ends of the rollers, a jaw member composed of two members pivoted to the upper ends of the uprights, the free ends of said members having spring engaging parts thereon, said members being slotted with the roller passing through the slots.

A device of the class described compriingupper and lower arms, each formed of a strip of material bent into loop shape, uprightsconnected with the limbs of the lower arm intermediate the ends thereof, a pin passing through the upper ends of the uprights and through the limbs of the upper handle an appreciable distance from the extremities of the limbs, said extremities having slots therein, a roller having its ends passing through the slots, washers on the ends of the rollers, a jaw member composed of two members pivoted to the upper ends of the uprights, the free ends of said members having spring engaging parts thereon and said members being slotted to receive the roller and means whereby other j a'w members; may be substituted for the first member.-

A device of the class described comprising upper and lower arms, each formed .of a strip of material. bent into loop shape, uprights connected with the limbs of the lower arm intermediate the ends thereof, a pin passing through the upper ends of the uprights and through'the' limbs of the upper handle an appreciable distance from theeX- tremities of the limbs, said extremities having slots therein, a roller having its ends passing through the slots, washers on the ends of the rollers, a jaw member composed of two members pivoted to the upper ends'of the uprights, the free ends of said members having springengaging parts thereon, said members being slotted with the roller passing through the slots and spring means for frictionally holding the jaw member against free movement.
