Description
Dec. 2, 1930. J. KOERNER PERMANENT WAVE BEAUTIF'IER Filed Nov. 2.
24 Jknffoezwar INVENTOR ATTORNEY WH'NESS Patented Dec. 2 1930 PATENT oFricE JOHN KQERNER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK PERMANENT-WAVE BEAUTIFIER Application filed November 2, 1929. 7 Serial No. 404,347.
This invention relates to a permanent wave beautlfier and aims partlcularly. to provide a simple, handy and convenient device for revivifying and restoring the wavy confor- 5 mation of the hair after the effect of a so substantial time to time so that the subject may maintain the hair in an attractive condition substantially the same as immediately after a so called permanent wave. 7
Another object is to construct a device'of simple and handy form which can be readily manipulated by the user and applied to the hair to beautify and revive. the same.
A further-object is to simplify and improve the construction of devices ofthis type and' reduce the cost of manufacture thereof so that the device can be sold'at small public.
Other it objects and advantages of the in vention will be hereinafter specifically pointed out, or will become apparent, as the specification proceeds.
lVith the above indicated objects in view. the invention resides in certain novel construction and combinations and arrangement of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the ac- 'companying drawings, which latter show an embodiment of the invention as at present preferred. r I In the drawings: 7 Figure 1 is a side elevation showing. the de' vice as it appears inuse.

Figure 3 is a detail view illustrating the device. Y
cost and thus be readily availed of by-the adj ustability of the applicator portion of the g V ber 28. Terminal members 29 are provided.
The permanent wave beautifier in this in stance comprises a receptacle 10 which may be of cylindrical or'other suitable form, having an enclosing cover 11 which may be screw threaded to the upper part of the receptacle as indicated at 12. The cover 11 in this instance is provided with an outlet portion 13, this portion 13 having a screw threaded socket 14. A nozzle '15 is provided for ap plication to the hair and this nozzle 15 is adapted to'be screwed into the socket 14 of outlet 13, or an elongated neck 16 may be provided to provide a longer reach for the applicator nozzle 15 when desired, this elongated neck portion 16 having screw threaded ends 17 and 18 adapted to co-operate with the socket 14 and screw threaded portion 19 of the nozzle 15 respectively.
The receptacle 10 is adapted :to contain a 7 suitable liquid which is heated in the receptacle so as to produce steam which may then pass through the outlet 13, neck 16 and nozzle 15 for application to the hair of the 7 subject. This liquid is introduced into the receptacle in the present instance by means of an opening 20, this opening being closed by a particular form of screw cap 21.
As seen in Figure 1, the receptacle 10 is provided with a handle 22 at one side of the device; and the arrangement is such that when this handle is grasped in the hand of the user, the thumb of the user may rest upon the concave top 23 of the screw cap 21. This screw cap 21 preferably being insulated and the handle 22 as well so that the user will not from the liquid introduced intothe receptacle 10 through the filling opening 20, I provide in this instance an electric heating element 24, whichpreferably includes a plurality of layers of resistance members, for the purpose of obtaining rapid generation of steam. This heating elementg24 in this instance is enclosed within a base 25, having an upstanding rim 26 screw threaded at the base of the receptacle 1O beneath the bottom 27 of the latter so as to form a heating chamat the side of the base 25, beneath the handle 22 and a connecting plug 30, having circuit wires 31, is adapted to be connected to the terminals 29 from any convenient source for the purpose of producing the necessary heat to obtain rapid steam generation.
The plug 30, wires 31, handle 22 and cap 23 being all in alignment at the end of the device opposite the nozzle 15, great convenience is afforded for the user in manipulating the device.
The insertable neck 16 may or may not be used, according to the desires of the user; as for example, when sitting at a dressing table is may be desirable to shorten the length of the outlet; while in standing or in other positions, the lengthened outlet, through the use of the neck 7116, ena les the user to hold the arm at a more comfortable low position which will enable the user to employ the device for as long a period as may be desired without tiring the arm.
The arrangement of the handle 22 in convenient uxtaposition to the thumb portion 23 of the cap 21 enables the operator to maintain a firm yet comfortable grip in supporting the apparatus. Thus, both the arm and the hand are not likely to become. tired regardless of the length of time the device is held in the iand during proper use of the device.
In the operation of the apparatus, the screw cap 21 is removed and a small quantity of suitable liquid is introduced through the filling opening 20 into the rece tacle 10. The cap 21 is then secured in place and the electric current turned on. The liquid will be quickly vaporized and emitted through the nozzle 15 and the receptacle manipulated to move the nozzle about and through the hair to provide the desired result of revivifying and restoring the wavy conformation of the hair substantially as originally provided in the permanent wa ing operation.
The hereinbefore described construction admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention; therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise arrangements shown and described, which are, as aforesaid, by way of illustration merely. In other words, the scope of protection contemplated is to be taken solely from the appended claims, interpreted as broadly as is consistent with. the prior art.
