Description

Nov. 18, 1930. I v, ARQNSQN 1,782,024
VANITY CASE Filad April 26, 1928 NVENTOR BY Mi \l" mama Nov. 18. 1930 UNITED STATES LOUIS V. 30175011, NEWARK, NEW JERSEIY, ASSIGN OR TO AB'I. METAL WORKS,
A COBPOBLTION 0] NEW JERSEY PATENT OFFICE.
VANITY C ASE My invention relates to improvements in vanity cases, etc. and the main object of the invention is to provide a case which is more convenient and efiicient in use as well as be ing attractive and compact. Further and more specific objects, features and advanta es will more clearly a pear from the detail escription given be ow taken in connection with the accompanyin sheet of drawings,
which form a part of t is specification.
In the drawin s, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a case embo ymg my improvements in a preferred form, and with the case closed. Fi 2 is a similar view with the case open an certain parts wholly or partially removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the cover of the case.
Referring to the drawings, 4 represents the body portion of the case rounded at the ends and having holding means at each end forrouge, owder or the like, said holding means being s own as closed by pivoted covers 5 and 6 respectively. A cover 7 for the bod portion of the case is hinged to the rear go of the body portion at 8. 10 represents a tubular container pivoted at one of its ends, 9, on
the same axes as the cover 7 and adjacent the rear edge of the case. The tubular member 10 is open at its other end and is adapted to lie in a pocket 11 between said cosmetlc holding means. 12 represents a lip-stick adapted to be carried in said tubular member 10 and removable from the 0 en end thereof. 13 represents a tubular older for the lip-stick which is inserted in the tubular container 10 with the lip-stick. When it is desired to use the lip-stick the container 10 is swung upwardly out of the pocket 11 and the hol er 13 with the lip-stick 12, removed therefrom. The holder 13 is slotted at 14 and provided with a slide having a projection 15 extending throu h the slot 14 and by means of which the end 0 the lip-stick 12 may be pushed out of the holder 13 as the lip-stick is worn away. The projection 15 also serves as a catch by means of which the holder 13 with the li stick 12 may be more easily removed from t e container 10. When the holder 13 is inserted in the container 10, the projection slides into 50 the slot 25.
The cover 7 is preferabl stamped out of sheet metal and is provide with a thin compar tment bounded on each side b sheet metal walls, 16 and 17 respectively. he cover has an opening 18 to said compartment, which opening is at the edge of the cover, and in the compartment there is inserted through said opening 18, a mirror 19, said mirror prefera 1y belng' an all metal mirror made of sheet metal, so that it is substantially unbreakable, and having a polished reflecting surface on both sides thereof. At its outer end the mirror has pivotally attached thereto a hasp, 20', which serves as a handle to the mirror by means of which it-is easily removed from the com artment. While the case is held by the left and of the user, the mirror, which may be withdrawn from the com artment by the right hand of the user, is la1d on the inside face 21 of the cover and is suitably held in position thereon (when the case is open as shown in Fig. 2) by means of the rim 22 on the cover. The mirror is preferably of such size and shape that it will for the most part, fit within th1s rim and thus be held in convenient position for operation a ainst the inside face of the cover while the nght hand of the user is free to manipulate the cosmetics. When finished the user will grasp the mirror by the handle 20 and replace it in the compartment in the cover by inserting it through the slotted opening 18.
The cover 7 of the case may then be closedand the has 20 slipped over a catch 23 secured to an projecting from the body portion of the case. Thus the hasp 20 not only serves as handle for the mirror but also, in combination with the catch 23, as latching means for locking, the mirror in its compartment and locking the case closed. The inside of the cover compartment is preferabl lined on both sides with chamois or'soft fa ric at 24 and 26, which, when the mirror is inserted, fits a ainst the faces of the mirror so that as the mirror is inserted and removed, it is automatically cleaned and polished on both sides thereof. It has been common in the past to make the inside face of the cover a mirror, but in such case it quickl becomes dirty from dust and powder and t e user must usually go through the s ecial operation of cleaning the same with a andkerchief each t1m e before use. This is avoided by my 1mproved arrangement described.
While I have described my 1m rovements in detail and with res ect to a pre erred form thereof, I do not desire to be limited to such details and form, since many changes and modifications may be made and certain of the improvements utilized in venous other t pes of cases, such as cigarette cases, etc., wit out departing from the spirit and see e of the in vention in its broader aspects. ence I desire to cover all embodiments comingwithin the language or scope of any one or more of the a pended claims.
