in' the principle beapplied to other types of power operated typewritingmachines.
In the drawing the figure ,repre sents a side elevation of the parts composlng the present invention with certain parts in fore and aft section.
The invention is illustrated as embodied in the usual standard Royal machine havin a laten A, type bars B, type ide C, an
ri bon vibrator D. It may, applied to tyfpewriting machines of other 200 aragterso ar as these elements are. concerne The key levers 1 are fulcrumed on an axis 2 and are normally held, against a stop 3 by.
a spring, not shown. The type bars B are 8 connected with power levers 4 by any suitable intermediate, connections, such as shown in my other application above referredtg. The power levers 4 are fulcrumed on "an axls 5 and each one has pivotally mounted there- 80 on near its rear end a star wheel 6 which cooperates with a rotating or .power shaft 7 This specific construction and the means by' which the power levers are given a sudden movement from the position shown in full lines to that shown in dotted lines, is fully set forth in my above mentioned application and forms no part of the present invention except in combmation with the ribbon 4o vibrator. The star wheel 6 is pivoted to the ed in their ends with depressionsadapted'to fit the ends of ,thefingers-formed on the power shaft 7. The key 1 cooperates with the power lever 4 to normally retain'tlie star wheel extensions out of contact with the to these springs normally hold the power levers owever, be
power lever andincludes extensions providin their position of rest, as shown in the drawings.
Each key lever has a downwardly extend ing ortion 2, and a fiat spring 2 carried by the key lever has a horizontal ortion 2 so arranged as to form a recess between the spring and the portion 2 of the key lever. The front end of each power lever 4 has a bent extension 4, the front face of which is adapted to contact with the rear edge of the horizontal portion of the spring 2 while the upper edge ofthis extension is adapted to'contact with the lower edge of the downwardly extending portion 2 of the key lever. Associated with the star wheel 6 1s a flat spring 6" which holds the" star wheel against accidental displacement but ermlts .its rotation relative to the power ever. The star wheel is provided with arms 6" having depressions 6 1n their outer ends.
These depressions are adapted to receive the ends of t e fingers/7" on the power shaft 7. The ends of these fingers are formed in the arcs of the circle concentric with the axis ofthe shaft.
A -universal bar 11 carried by a rock shaft 12 underlies all of the power levers 4 and this rock shaft has an upwardly extending arm 13 which'is connected by a link 14 with a lever15 near the rear of the machine which is pivoted onashaft 16. A spring 17 connects the upper end of this lever with an ofistandin lever 18 also carried on saidshaft16. "ections 19 from the two levers 15 and 18 lim1t their movement toward each other under the influence of the spring 17.
The upper end of the lever 18 has a pin 20 which lies in position to engage and op-.
erate the usual actuator 21 for the ribbon vibrator. The ribbon vibrator D 'is con nected to a bell crank lever pivoted to turn on" an axis 23 and retained in normal position by a spring'24. The downward extending'arm 25 of said bell crank lever is pivotally connected at 26-to the actpator 21 intermediate itsends. An arm- 27 on said actuator engages the usual cam member 28 by, which the parts are moved to different posi- 4 tion when a'multicolored ribbonis to be employed.
When a type key lever is depressed the rear end of the power lever 4 will drop slightly and the star wheel will come in contact with the rotating member 7. Conse quently upward movement will be given to the rear end of the. power lever and corresponding movement to the front end of the lever as shown in the dotted line position. This movement will move the universal bar 11 to dotted line position and exert a forward pull on the link 14. In power operated constructions of this character this forward pull is very sudden and sharp and the present construction employs the spring 17 in order to cushion the movement and avoid such jerks or strains upon the mechanism as well as consequent noise. The spring 17 will yield slightly but will transmit movement to the lever 18 which through the mechanism described will operate the ribbon vibrator. I
The usual universal frame 29 is provided which is operated from the type bars by.
means of the links 30. In the ordinary machine, this universal bar operates the ribbon mechanism but in the present case it is so formed that it does not come in contact with the actuator 21. It operates the escape ment mechanism in the old' and well known manner.
It will be apparent that the invention disclosed comprises a means for operating the ribbon vibrator which is especially adapted for use in a power machine and which can be embodied therein with but little modification of the existing construction. The provision of a spring. in the operative connections also lessens the noise and prevents any undue strain being placed upon the connections and assist in a rapid and efli'cient operation.
The movement generated by the power shaft isgreater than the movement required to elevate the ribbon, therefore the spring 17 by yielding compensates for the excessive time.
movement, thereby retaining the ribbon elevated a correspondingly longer period of Assuming that the parts are in the normalposition shown in the drawings, a slight depression of the key lever 1 will move the spring 2 and allow the extension 4 on the 'power lever 4 to move into the recess Y.
7" of the power shaft will engage the depres sions 6-in the arms 6 of the star wheel and thereby quickly raise the rear end of the power lever and consequently effect operation ofthe ribbon vibrator.
The invention may-of course be embodied in different machines and minor changes may accordingl be made without in any way departing mm the spirit of the invention which is to beregarded as limited only by scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:

6. Ina typewriting machine, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of an actuator therefor, a power lever, connections between the power lever and the actuator for operating the vibrator upon movement of said power lever, a power shaft having fingers with ends formed in the arcs of a circle concentric with the axis of the shaft, a star wheel pivoted to said power lever, the arms of said star whee-1 being provided in their ends with depressions adapted to fit the ends of said fingers and thereby move said' power lever to operate the vibrator, and a key for controlling said power lever to eifect o'perative en agementof the star wheel arms with the ngers on the power shaft, said power lever and key being normally .en-
gaged to retain the star wheel arms of the power lever out of contact with the fingers of the power shaft.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
