A. L. ABBTT JAMB S ECILI ON 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Dec. 14
HM HH UHHIIMH PIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIUNIII I www Patented Nov. 11, 1930 UNiTED STATES` PATENT OFFICE ALBERT L. ABBOTT, or CANTON, OHIO, AssIeNon To THE DIEBOLD SAFE a LOCK Colvi-` TANY, or CANTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION or OHIO y JAMB SECTION n Application filed December 14., 1925. Serial No. 75,223.
'invention relates to jamb's for doors for preventing the lateral spreading of Vthe door frame' away from the door when subjectto intense `heat and `for preventing a forward vdisplacement of the hinged door jamb from its `trame jamb inthe event that thesafe hinges are accidentally or purposely removed or madeineffective.
Sometimes a safe door is` constructed `wit-h tongue and groove jambs of one cross section which interiit and` i interlock with, `trame tongue` and groove jambs ot another cross section. i
,These ditierent` jainb sections are Ordina` rily` made of sheet or plate material formed bydies operated by anpress brake, and the `necessity of providing one or moretongue and groove jamb sectionsfor the door and one or more` different interfitting and inter-` locking janib sections for the door frame, thus., necessitates the use of ainultiplicity` of AA25 dies, and consequently the use of a multi# plicity of press brakes, or delays due to changingdierent sets of dies On thesame press brake, `all of which result in added cost for the finished product;
,u heobject ofthepresentinventionis toireduce the number of dies required for making interfitting and interlocking` jambs for doors and frames by providing a tongue and groove jamb. section, one length of which maybe used for the jamb of a safe door, and another lengthofwhich maybe used for an inter-titting and interlocking jamb for the door frame. u i i Theseobjects are (attained bythe `use of ,4o a ,jambsectiom which if placed in oneposition with reference to a longitudinal axis of the sect-ion, and revolved about that axis 180 degrees, will interlit `with another identical section placed in the original position of the revolved section. i
YEmbodiments of the invention in use as for the intertting and interlocking door and `ramejambs of a salie` are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming partherei of,in" which? l Fig. 2, an enlarged cross section ot im` proved j amb sections as used for the door in l, with dotted lines illustrating other portions of the door construction, and broken and dotted lines indicating the resulting po-` sition of the amb sections shown in full lines, if revolved about designated longitudinal axes 180degrees, which positions are the exw actpositions of lengths ofthe saine sections when used for constructing the iframe jambs as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Similar numerals reter` to similar throughout the drawings. l
An embodiment 1 of the improved liamlo section for use as `for the outer vertical amb of a safe door D includes spaced, parallel Walls 2, 3, 4 and 5, one edge 2 of the wall 2 being connected with one edge 3 oi' wall 8 by a sloping wall 6 and the other odge 3 of wall 3 being connected by the reversely extending anti-lateralspread wall 7 with the edge Ll of wall 4 spaced between walls 2 and 3, and the other edge 4 oi wall l being connected with one edge 5 of wall 5 by sloping wall 8 extending from wall 4 to wall` 5 in the saniegencral direction that wall 6 extends from wall 2 to wall 3, wall 5 being spaced beyond Walls 4 and 3 so that wall 3 is spaced between walls 4; and `5. Y
The jamb section as best illustrated in Fig. 2, may be a right horizontal cross-section of alengthof jarnb section whose walls are perpendicular' to the plane of the drawing and having wall edges all parallel with each other. u f i If the section lbe revolved about a longitudinal axis O, perpendicular to the plane of the paper and therefore apparent as a point, 180 degrees from the reference line XX, in the direction indicated by the broken arrow headed arcs a, o, c, (l, e, f, g and it, the section would then occupy the position indicated by the dotted lines at l.
parts Y In other Words a length of section identical to the length 1 for the door jamb, if vpositioned as indicated by the dotted lines 1, may be used as an interfitting and interlocking frame jamb for the section 1. Y
The "proportions of-,the .Wallso'f the?V irnJ proved lamb sectionY 1 are such that lWalls 6,V
3 and 7 constitute protruding tongues Which interfit and vinterlockwith theretreating ygroove formed by Walls 7 ,4fand8,` ofa length 'of the same'section when placed in the posig` tion indicated at 1 and itis obviousthatthe f anti-lateral-spread Wall 7 o-f the fr ame jamb Will abut the Wall-7 of the door jamb, if the frame is caused to eXpandlaterally by heat or other forms of energy, and that the greater the tendency toeXpand, the tighter Will'be thelateral abutment of Walls 7 modified jamb section 10 may be used fortliehinge-side vertical jamb of the `safe doorandl includes spaced Walls 12, 13, 14 and 15, one edge 12 ofthe Walls 12 being connected WithV one edge 13 of Wall 13 by an anti-forward displacement Wall 16 and the other edge13 of Wall 13 being connected by' the reversely extending anti-lateral-spread Wall 17 with the Vedge 14 of Wall 14, and the other edge 14 of the Wall 14 being connected With one edge'l of Wall 15 by anti-forward displacement Wall 18, and Wall 12 being pro.u
Y vided at its edge 12 with an angled leg 12a,
et section of a length of jamb section Whosepwalls are perpendicular to the plane of the *drawing and vvalll being likewisefprovided at edge 15 with an angled leglfa.
, Thejamb'sectionl' as best illustrated inf `Fi'g.,21may be as aforesaid a right 'horizontal and having VWall* edges all parallel with each Y other. If thesection 10 be revolved about anV` 4` aXis- O 'perpendicular tothe plane ofthe paper andtherefore apparenty asa point 180V degrees vfrom the reference'line X-X, in
the' direction indicated by the broken 'arrow y headed arcsj, le, Z, 02,7, 0,y p, g, randos., the

as indicated by thedottedjlines at '10Y maybe used as an interfitting and interlocking frame j amb for the section 1Q. The proportions of thevvalls of the improved jamb` section 10 are suchthatwalls 16, 13 and 17 constitute .pro 'trudmg tongues which interi'ity andinterlock dotted'lines at 'lOf and itis obvious that the Y anti-forward Ydisplaceme'nt.Walls 16 and 1'8" Vof theframe jambwvillzabut the Walls' 1.3 and 16` of the door amb, ifs'omev form of energy vviththe retreating grooves formed b'yWalls 17, 14and 18 of a length ofthe same sectionV when placedintheposition illustrated by the causes a forward displacementfof the'door jamb 10, vafter or. coincidental" vvith'vthe re! `movaly or damage lof the vhingesfand likewise the Walls 17 will prevent lateral spreadingof the frame from the door, separately orsimul-V i taneously with any tendency to forward dis placement thereof.l Y, Y Referring noW more particularly to Fig. 1,
the safe door l) may be constructed in aj,
