Mounted in the upper end of the tube isa v screw 19 the nose whereof impinges on the aforesaidball section 16 and admits of a variation of the setting vof the crank arm 16 of a triple-armed lever against the opposition of the coil spring 18 located within the tube. VThe lower end of the aforesaid tube 17 is 1 secured to the upper end of arod 20 the lower end whereof is pivotally-connected to the end of one arm of a lever 21 fulcrumed on-a spin- 'dle 21? secured to the base of the slicing machine. This lever 21 is provided adjacent the fulcrum with an upwardly extending crank V 22 provided with a forked portion carrying inwardly directed pegs 22" adapted to engage in a groove 23 formed in the male member 23 =ofa clutch splined on the main driving shaft 24: of the machine, the female member 25 of the clutchbeingloosely mounted on the said through a skew pinions 26, 27.

V 1 The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to effect a sharpening of the knife 15 thecontrol lever 21 is moved in a downward direction thereby effecting a-n upwardrmovem-ent of the rod 20'connected to the other end thereof, the upward movement of the said rod 20 through the tube 17 effecting an anti-clockwise movement of the crank arm 16 of the triple-armed lever whereby the arm 16 in contact with the end ofthe spindle 9 of the finishing wheel'moves in a clockwise direction and allows the sp-ring}13 disposed about the saidspindle to bring the surface or the grinding'wheel 9 into contact with the, knife. Simultaneously .the other.
arm 16 of the said'triple-armed lever moves in a clockwise direction away from the flange 8 on the-end of the spindle 8 carrying the main grinding wheel 8 whereby; the] said wheel 8, under the agency of the coil spring 14, is forced into contact with the knife-edge.
The movement of the operating J lever 21:
through the crank 22- also effects sim-ult ane ously a withdrawal of themalemember 23 of'the clutch and thereby frees the carriage reciprocation mechanism from driving con- }nection with the main shaft 24 whereby the knife can be rotated for efiecting a grinding operation without necessitating any reciprocation of the carriage. WVhen the grinding operation has been completed the operating lever 21 is raised whereupon the rod is moved in a downward direction thereby causing the upper arm 16 of the triplearmed lever to bear on the end of the spindle 9 carrying the finishing wheel 9 and to force the said wheel away from the knife 15 against the opposition of the coil spring 13, at the same time the lower arm of the triple-armed lever bears on the flange 8 on the end of the spindle 8 of the grinding wheel 8 and forces the said Wheel 8 out of contact with the edge of the knife against the opposition of the coil spring 14.
It will be appreciated that in a construction hereinbefore described the grinding wheels 8 and 9 when in the grinding position are maintained in a definite position relative to the knife-edge and ensure a constant pressure thereon under the action of their respective coil springs. Moreover, the
operation of positioning the grinding wheels automatically effects a de-clutching of the carriage traversing mechanism of the drivlng mechanism whereby the knife 15 can be r0- tated for effecting the grindingoperation e without the out of balance effect occasioned by the traverse of the carriage 28. Furthermore, the means for adjusting the setting of the crank arm 16 of the triple-armed lever permits of a ready adjustment of the wheels to compensate for Wear in the face of the wheels and, in addition, the provision of the means for adjusting the wheel supporting housing 7 admits of the ready ad ustment of the position of the wheels as a whole to compensate for any wear so that the maximum amount of usage can be obtalned from the grinding wheels.
Claims a 1. A. grinding mechanism for slicing machines of the rotary disc knife and reciprocating carriage type comprising a support, spindles slidably mounted relatively to said support, grinding wheels rotatably mounted on said spindles and adapted to be moved into and out of contact with the edge of the knife, projections on said spindles, a rockable triple armed lever the ends of one pair of arms whereof are adapted to bear on said projections, spring means adapted to bear on the spindles and adapted normally to tend to maintain the grinding wheels 1n contact with the knife edge, an actuating lever, means connecting the third arm of the triple armed lever to said actuating lever, a driving shaft for imparting rotary motion to the knife, a clutch member freely mounted on the driv ing shaft and in connection with the carriage reciprocation mechanism, a co-operating clutch member slidably but non-rotatably 1; mounted on the driving shaft, an arm rigidly chines of the rotary disc knife and reciprocating carriage type comprising a support, a pair'of grinding wheels rotatably and slidably mounted relatively to said support, means for moving said wheels into and out of contact with the knife edge, a rotatable driving shaft, means driven from said shaft for effecting a reciprocation of the carriage, a clutch member slidably but non-rotatably mounted on said driving shaft, an actuating means adapted to effect the engagement and disengagement of the said clutch member, means connecting said actuating means to the means for moving the grinding wheels into and out of their acting position the connection between the actuating means and the clutch member and between the actuating means and the grinding wheel control means being such that the operation of moving the said member for disengaging the clutch and thereby disconnecting the carriage reciprocation mechanism from the driving shaft simultaneously causes the member connecting the actuating means and the grinding wheel control means to cause the said grinding Wheels to move into their acting position.

A grinding mechanism for slicing machines of the rotary disc knife and reciprocating carriage type comprising a support, spindles slidably mounted relatively to said support, grinding wheels rotatably mounted on said spindles, projections on said spindles, a rockable triple armed lever the ends of one pair of arms whereof are adapted to bear on said projections, spring means adapted to bear on the spindles and normally to tend to maintain the grinding wheels in contact with the knife edge, an actuating lever, means 1 connecting the third arm of the triple arm lever to said actuating lever, a rotatable driving shaft, means driven from said shaft for imparting a rotary motion to the knife, means driven from said shaft for efit'ecting a reciprocation of the carriage, a clutch member freely mounted on the driving shaft and connected to a part of the mechanism for effecting a reciprocation of the carriage, a clutch member freely but non-rotatably mounted on the driv- 1 ing shaft and adapted to he engaged arid dis= engaged by'the operation not said actuating lever-the relationofithe actuating lever to the clutch member and to the grinding Wheel con; trol means being such 7 that the actuation. of the .said' lever foi' disengaging theclutch simiiltaneousl-y' disconnects the carriage reciprocation me-chanism;r0m.;the drivingjshaft and'eauses thegrinding rwheel contrbl means 0 togimovelthfivgi'imii g Wheels into the acting position- 5; 1 Y 7 7 e r a In I teetimonyuwhereof 'I vhave hereunto set my hand."
