A further object of the invention is to produce in a device of this character a structure such that the bed-spring may be formed in an open mesh and will, at the same time, be thoroughly braced so that it will not tend to sag in use.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan of a bedspring constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail View on line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the manner of connecting the adjacent sections of the springs.
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective new of a pair of mesh elements in separated relation showing the manner in which they are connected.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, it will be seen that the spring is formed in transversely extending sections each comprising end mesh forming elements 10, adjacent mesh forming elements 11, and inner mesh forming elements 11 connected to the elements 11 in the manner herelnafter described. Each end mesh forming element comprises an elongated outer bar portion 12 from one end of which extends an obliquely directed leg 13 which is divided into the upper and lower portions 13 and 13 respectively, which portions are arranged in the offset parallel relation by an intermediate connecting portion 14.
The mesh 11 adjacent the end mesh 10 is formed as shown, of a single strand of wire to a substantially triangular shape except one side thereof, indicated by the numeral 11 which extends in offset parallel relation to the side with which it is directly connected'by the intermediate portion 11. In the assembled fabric the portion 1 1 of the end mesh element is in twisted engagement 5 with the portion 11 of the adjacent mesh element 11 so that the leg 11 of the adjacent mesh element is directed toward the free end of the side bar 12 of the end mesh element with which it is twisted as indicated at 15,
and the portion 13 of the end mesh forming element is directed toward the free end of the adjacent mesh element 11 with which it is twisted as indicated at 16. The mesh elements 11 are originally of diamond-shape formation and are connected in the manner shown and-indicated at 18 with the mesh forming element 11 adjacent thereto. All of the mesh forming elements 11 in each transverse section or strip of the fabric lying between the end elementslO and 11 are originally of the diamond-shaped de sign shown, whereas, the elements 10 and 11, .while one, the element 11, appears as of diamondshape outline and the other, the ele ment 10, appears as of triangular outline, are originally of the design shown in Fig. 3. The twisted ends of the bars 12 of the end mesh elements and the portions 11 of the adjacent mesh element at 15, and the twisted ends 16 of the terminal of one side of the adjacent mesh element 11 and the portion 13 of the end mesh element, are bent to form the hooksTI. The ends of the other diamond-shaped mesh elements 11 are similarly twisted together as indicated at 17 and are also bent in the same manner to form hooks H.
These hooks H of the mesh elements of one transverse section are connected as shown in Fig. 2 with the other ends of the mesh elements of an adjacent transverse section to form the spring fabric. The connections between the hooks H and the mesh elements of an adjacent section are made secure by clamping the hooks closed.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that the meshelements 10 and 11 are so interconnected that should one of the sides of the mesh element 10 become broken the ad jacent mesh element 11 will remain in connection through the medium of the portion 11 with an end mesh element of an adjacent transverse section and thus prevent breaking open of the side of the spring fabric.
Since the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of the invention, I do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A bed-spring fabric comprising .a series of mesh elements each series extending transversely of the finished fabric, each end element of each series comprising a relatively long straight bar and an integral obliquely directed bar, an adj acentmesh element comprising an integral'wire body having four portions, three of whichare arranged to form three sides of a diamond, the fourth portion bein directed across the oblique bar of the first-mentioned mesh element and connected therewith and further connected at its end with the end of the straight side of the first mesh element, the other end of the secondmentioned mesh element being connected with the free end of said oblique bar, said twisted ends being formed to provide hooks for engaging the mesh elements of an adjacent section, and interconnected intermediate mesh elements of substantially triangular formation thereof being connected with said second-mentioned elements.
2. In a bed-spring fabric, a series of trans verse mesh elements, each series comprising an end element having an outer bar extending longitudinally of the fabric edge and an inwardly obliquely directed end portion formed in two ofiset substantially parallel mentioned element being extended to cross between said units and having engagement therewith and further having engagement at its end with the other end of said outer bar, the other end of said last element having engagement with the end of the obliquely directed portion of the first-mentioned element, and intermediate substantially diamond-shaped elements having their longitudinal axes parallel with one another and with those of the first and second mentioned elements, said connected ends of the firstmentioned elements and portions of the intermediate elements being formed to provide hooks adapted to engage adjacent elements of another series.
