Referring now to Fig). 1, the reference characterA denotes the oiler furnace considered as a whole. The boiler defines the combustion space proper B beneath which there is an ash pit C 'formed by the setting 7 which serves to carry the boiler.
In the main, the boiler conprises the four drums 8, 9,-10 and 11; the 'front water wall a composed of longitudinally finned tubes 12, the lower ends of Which-are connected into the drum. 9 and the upper ends of which are connected into .the drum 11; the side water walls b composed of longitudinally finned tubes 13, the lower ends `of which are connected into the headers 14 and the upper ends of which are connected into the headers 15, the headers 14 being connected into the drum 8 and the headers 15 being connected into the drum 11' the roof water wall c composed of finned tubes 16, 'the lower ends of which are connected into the drum 10 and the upper endsxof which are connected into Athe drum 11; the rear water wall d comosed of longitudinally finned tubes 17, the ower ends of which are connected into the drum 8, and the up er. ends of which are connected into the rum 10; v the bank of tubes 1-8, the lower ends of which arev connected to the drum 8, and the upper ends of which are connected into the drum 9; the vertical bank of tubes 19, the upper ends of which are connected into the drum 10 and the lower ends of which are connected into the drum 8; the equalizing vdrum 2O and the equalizer tubes 21 and 22, which connect drums 11 and 20. .Feed water is supplied to the drum 10 by means of pipe 10a. The drum 10 is also provided with a baille 10b forming a. chamber into which the steam from the tubes 17 of the upright wall d is delivered vand from which chamber the steam is led by the'tubes 16 of ,the roof wall c.
The bank of tubes 18 bounds thebottom of the combustion space and the tubes are spaced apart a sufficient distance to allow any refuse particles precipitating out of the 23 from which they are passed over the vertical bank of tubes 19, suitable baiiling'being associated with the bank of tubes 19. The products of combustion pass from the bank of tubes 19 at 24 into the breeching 25 in whichis located the combustion airpreheater 26. I
It will be observed that the bank of tubes 19 constitutes the economiz'er section of the boiler and that this economizer section by virtue of its tubes `connecting the` boiler A.

A superheater 27 is located between the section being subject to the heat bank of tubes 19 and the rear tubular Water A wall (Z of the boiler which superheater is subject to the combustion gases passing from the combustion chamber to the breeching 25, the gases, altho cooled suiiiciently by the bank of tubes 18 to prevent fusion of the ash, still being of sufficient temperature to superheat the steam passing thru the superheater, and to provide the necessary heat for the combustion air.
At the foury corners of the combustion space and preferably at the upper `portion thereof I have provided the burners 28 for introducing the fuel to bc'burned. Highly preheated combustion air is introduced with the fuel thru the medium of the air openings 29 surrounding the burner nozzles, the preheated air being taken from the air preheater 26 hereinbefore mentioned by the ducts 30 leading from the preheater to the burners. Thus the fuel and air is introduced in a manner to produce vortical mixture and combustion, the combustion being intense and turbulent, whereby a high flame temperature and short length of iame travel is obtained.
Referring now to the modification illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that each of the tubes 12 of the front wall of the combustion chamber connect into separate headers 31 instead of'connecting intoga common drum as shown in Fig. 1. `The tubes of the bank of tubes 18 connect the headers 81 with the drum 8, whereby the bank of tubes is divided into a plurality of vertical rows of tubes 32, the number of which is increased or -diminishedin accordance with the degree of tem rature of the exit gases desired.
It will be noted that by locating the superheater as shown, a high degree of superheat is obtained and the temperature of the gases is somewhat lowered this temperature being further lowered by the Aeconomizer section whereby the temperature of the gases at the air heater is kept below the point at which the air heater burned.

In combination, a boiler furnace having its side and end ,walls comprised of upright tubular water walls upper and lower drums plates or v elements would be and upper and lower headers, the tubes of the end walls being connected into said upper and lower drums, the tubes of the side walls being connected into said upper vand lower headers, the upper headers being connected to arr-upper drum and the lower headers being connected to the opposite lower drum, an economizer section integral with said boiler comprising water tubes directly connecting the lower and upper drums of the rear end wall, said economizer section constituting the sole downcomer for the boiler, said tubular` water walls-being subject to radiant heat and the tubes of the economizer of the gases of combustion.
2. In combination, a boiler furnace having its side and end walls comprised of 11pof convection right tubular water walls upper and lower 7U drums and upper and lower headers, the tubes of the end walls being connected into said upper and lower drums, the tubes of the side walls being connected into said upper and lower headers, the upper headers being connected to an upper drum and the lower headers being connected to the opposite lower drum, a roof water wall comprising water tubes connecting the aforesaid upper drums, tubes connecting the aforesaid lower drums, and economizer tubes which also constitute the sole downcomer for the boiler di- `rectly connecting the lower and upper drums of the rear end wall, said tubular water walls being subject to `radiant heat and the tubes of the economizer being subject to the heat. of convectiontof the gases of combustion.
3. In combination in a pulverized coal burning boiler furnace, a furnace Ishaped boiler comprising front and rear walls formed of upper` drums, lower drums and Water tubes connecting said drums; sidev walls formed of upper headers, lower headers and water tubes connecting said headers, said upper headers being connected into the upper drum of the front wall and said lower headers being connected into the lower drum of the rear wall; a roof wall formed of water tubes connecting said upper drums; tubes marginal of the bottom of the boiler connecting said lower drums; and a bank of tubes spaced from the water tubes of the rear wall directly connecting the upper and lower drums of said rear wall and constituting the sole downcomers for the boiler.
4. In a pulverized fuel burning installation,`a boiler shaped furnace comprising a pair of upper drums, a pair of lower drums, front and rear tubular water walls composed of upright tubes respectively connecte into the front upper and lower drums and the rear vupper and lower drums, side water walls composed of upright tubes connected with the rear lower and front upperldrums, an upper water wall composed of tubes connected into the upper drums, tubes connecting the lower drums, economizer tubes which also constitute (the sole downcomers for the boiler, directly connected into the rear upper and lower drums and spaced away from the rear water wall, superheater elements in said space, an offtake beyond said economizer tubes, an air heater in said oftake, pulverized fuel burners, and means for delivering the preheated combustion air from the preheater tothe combustion space dened by the boiler.
5.. The combination with a boiler furnace having its combustion space largely defined by upright tubular water walks connected into the circulation of the boiler, of an upper and a lower drum, tubes of the rear end wall being connected to said upper and lower drums, a bank of substantially upright economizer tubes connected to said upper and lower drums, said bank of tubes being spaced away from the tubes of the rear end wall, and a superheater in the space between the said bank of econoniizer tubes and tubes of the rear end wall, means whereby fuel may be burned in suspension in said combustion space with the gaseous products of combustion passing downward and around said lower drum, a baffle in the lower portion of said bank of econolnizer tubes directing said gases through said bank of economizer tubes from the rear thereof to the said space in which the superheater is located, the said superheater being shielded from the radiant heat of the combustion space by the tubes forming the rear end wall of the furnace. v l
6. The combination with a furnace shaped tubular boiler having anvupper drum to which the tubes of the boiler are connected, substantially all of said tubes being exposed to radiant heat, of a bank of convection tubes, an upper drumy to which the upper ends of said convection tubes are c0nnected, means connecting said first drum with said latter drum comprising a plurality of substantially horizontal tubes some of which connect the upper portion of the two drums and others of which connect the two drums at a lower point, and
l means connecting the lower ends of the said shaped boiler.
7. In combination a furnace shaped boiler the side walls of the combustion chamber thereof including rows of substantially upconvection tubes to the tubes of the furnace right tubes subject to radiant heat, means connecting the upper ends of said rows of tubes to a common drum, a bank of couvection tubes, an upper drum to `which the upper ends of said convectionA tubes are connected, means connecting said first drum with said latter drum and means connecting the lower ends of the said convection tubes v In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
