GAR TRUCK CENTER BEARING Filed June '5, 1929 Patented Oct. 28, 1930 PATENT OFT-Ice GEORGE w. WIEGANI), or DUBUQUE, IOWA CAR-TRUCK CENTER BEARING,
Application filed June 3, 1929. Serial No. 368,131.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bearings and particularly to bearings for the trucksof street and railway cars, and the like;
One object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, and which can be easily and quickly applied to the body and truck of a street car or railway car. I
Another object is to provide a center hearing device for a car which readily permits the complete removal of the truck, upon jacking up the car body, after-having removed'a single part of the device.
, Another object is to provide a device of this character which readily permits the reversal of the truck, without disconnecting the same from the car, or withdrawing the truck from beneaththe car.
Another object resides in the particular form of the bearing members, and the plates supporting them, whereby accidental disconnection is prevented, and wherein escape of dirt and water may be readily permitted.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: 1
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view throughthe invention and the associated portions of the car body and the truck thereof;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a portion of a railway car body, and 11 represents a portion of one of the wheeled trucks thereof, in connection with which the present invention is particularly adapted for use.
' Secured to the center of the upper face of the truck 11 is a plate-12 having a central opening 13 therein, surrounded by an upwardly extending flange lt. In outwardly spaced, concentric relation to the flange-14:, is a second flange 15. The intervening space,
. between the flanges, inclines downwardly and outwardly toward the flange 15, and disposed on this inclined floor, designated by the numerall 6, is a circular series of bearing rollers 17, each being conical I111 shape, with their apexes directed toward the inner flange 1 1,
and their bases, or larger ends, directed toward the outer flange 15; Formed in the cen ter of the floor 16, in concentricrelation to the flanges land 15, is a groove l 8, within which the circumferential rings, 19, of the rollers 17, run. 1 i i g V Secured to the bottom face of the car body is a plate 20,0f s'imilarconstruction to the plate 12, except that,instead of the central opening 13, there is cast integrally with the center of the lower face of the plate, a do:
vpending stem or stud 21, and formed trans versely in the lower end of said stud is an opening 22 for the reception of the retaining pin or key bar 23. This stud, as clearly seen in Figure 1, passes downwardly through the central-opening 13 of the plate 12, and the key 23 passes throughithe opening 22, be-
neath the said plate, whereby the plates are properly held together, but permitted to rotate relatively to each other. To maintain the key 28 in proper position in the opening of the stud, split pins or keys 23 are disposed through openings in theends of said key 28.
In the lower face of the plate 20 there is formed a-circular channel 24, similar to the channel in the plate 12, with the bottom wall 25 inclined correspondingly with the floor of the other channel, and having formed in the center thereof the similar groove 26, receiving the ribs 19 of the bearing rollers 17. Formed in the lower side of the floor 16, at a plurality of points, are the openings 27,
which lead out throughthe outer edge of the plate 12,'whereby to permit dirt and water to readily escape from the bearing channel;
To remove the truck from the car, it is only necessary to jack up the car body, to a sufficient height to withdraw the stud 21 a from the opening 13, after the split pins 23 before, without removing the key 23, until the wheels of the truck are clear of the rails, when the operator rotates the truck, as suspended on the stud 21, until the truck has een completely reversed, after which the car body is lowered, to permit the truck to seat on the rails.
What is claimed is:
A car truck center bearing including upper and lower plates, the upper plate having a central depending stub shaft provided with a transverse opening and a circular channel which inclines upwardly and outwardly with a. circular groove in the upper wall thereof, the lower plate having a central opening receiving said stub shaft therethrough and having a. circular channel in its upper face with a circular groove in its bottom wall, said bottom plate having a recess surrounding saidopening, a retaining pin in the opening of the shaft, and tapered rollers in the grooves each having a rib engaged in said grooves.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
GEORGE W. lVIEGAND.
