This invention relates to stoker mechanism and more particularly to fuel distributors and the like. V
The principal object of the invention is the provision of new and improved means for cooling the parts of a locomotive that are exposed to the heat of combustion of the fuel I V facture, easily assembled on the stoker, eflicient in operation, strong and durable.
Other and further objects and advantages will readily appear to those skilled in the art from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which y a Fig. 1 is a rear view of a locomotive, showing the invention in position thereon Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the rear portion of a locomotive, showing one form of the invention in position thereon, with parts insection and parts broken away;

On the drawings, the reference character 10 designates the backhead of a conventional locomotive, 11 the firebox thereof, and 12 the firedoor opening. The stoker is designated generally by the reference character 13 and comprises the conveyer 9 for transferring the fuel from a source of supply, as the tender, to the locomotive, a-pair of divergent elevators 14 and an adjustable divider 8 fordividing the stream of fuel from the conveyer in proper proportions for the two elevators. i

15 in the usual manner. Since the details of the driving mechanism and the screw conveyer constitute no part of the present invention, it is not thought necessary to further describe or illustrate the same.
In the form of the device shown in Figs. 1
and 2 the upper section of each elevator casing is in the form of an elbow 16, the front end of which constitutes a distributor member 20 extending through an opening 17 in the backhead 10 for distributing fuel over the grates of the firebox. Each elbow is provided with an opening 25 through which access may be had' to the interior of the elbow. A closure 26 is provided for the opening 25.
It is preferably though not necessarily hinged at its upper end as at 27 and a latch 28 holds the same in closed position.
It is desirable that means he provided for detachably connecting the distributor members to the el vator casings whereby the distributor member may be removed for replacement or repairs. .As shown,the" elbows 16 are detachably connected to the upper ends of the elevator casings by means of bolts or other fastening elements extending through the abutting flanges 18.
The elevators 14 comprise elevator screws 21 which, for convenience in removing the elbows 16, terminate adjacent to the upper ends of the elevator casings. Theyelbow is provided witha curved bore the curved portion of which is preferably dome-shaped,
whereby fuel forced upwardly .by the screw elevator will be directed onto the distributor in front of the steam nozzle 22. The nozzle 22 is preferably provided with a plurality of steam jets which are supplied by steam from the pipes 30 for projecting the fuel into the firebox.
The front end of the distributor member is provided with a baflle 23 and forwardly and laterally extending channels 24 as is well understood in the art.
The front end of the distributor member 20 extends into the firebox and consequently I is subjected to the intense heat of the burning fuel during the operation of the locomotive.
In order to prevent the distributor member from becoming damaged or incapacitated by the heat of combustion, suitable means are provided for cooling the distributing memher.
In the form of the device selected to illustrate one manner of accomplishing this function, the distributor member is cooled by circulating a fluid therethrough. The distributor member is cored as at 31 to form a water jacket through which water is adapted to be circulated. Preferably the water is forced through the jacket by a water pump entering the jacket through the pipe 29 at the rear lower portion of the distributor member and passing from the same through the pipe 32 into the boiler of the locomotive above the fire door opening. i
The pipe 29 is connected to the backhead 10 through a short length of pipe 33 having the valve 34 therein. The pipe 32 is provided with a check valve 36 for preventing the return of the water and steam from the boiler. If desired the pipe 29 may be provided with a valve 35 whereby the pipe 29 may be closed below the branch pipe 33 and by opening the valve 3& water, will circulate by gravity through the water jacket of the distributor tube.
The water jacket at the rear portion of the distributor member may be provided with a horizontal partition 37 which will cause the Water entering below the partition to flow to the front of the water jacket in passing through the distributor tube. This partition may, however, be omitted if desired.
In the operation of the device, Water is forced by the pump through the pipe 29 or flows by gravity through the pipe 33 into the pipe 29 and thence it passes into the rear lower portion of the water jacket of the distributor tube, thence forwardly and upwardly, and then rearwardly and out through the pipe 32 and into the boiler through the backhead of the locomotive.
The form of the device shown in Fig. 4 differs from that shown in Fig. 1 in that the distributor member 38 is detachably connected to the elbow 39 as by means of the fastening members 41. In this form of the device the elbow 39 is integral with the elevator casing and the elevator screw 42 eX- tends upwardly within the same adjacent to the steam nozzle 43..
In this type of the device the operation is substantially the same as that disclosed above. that is, the water is caused to circulate through the distributor member either by gravity from the boiler or is forced through the same by a suitable pump.
While a partition corresponding to the partition 37 is not shown in Fig. 4:, it is understood that it may be employed if desired.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a stoker mechanism, a distributor tube adapted to extend through an opening in the backhead of a locomotive, a water jacket for the exposed end of said tube, a conduit leading from the upper portion of said jacket to the locomotive boiler for conducting water to said boiler at a point above said opening, and a conduit leading to the lower portion of said jacket, said conduit being arranged to receive cooling water from the boiler at a point below said opening and through a pump from a reservoir and means for cutting one or both of said supplies of cooling water out of operation.
2. In a stoker mechanism, a distributor tube adapted to extend through an opening in the back head of a locomotive, a water jacket for the exposed end of said tube, a conduit leading from a reservoir to the lower portion of said jacket through which water may be pumped, a valve in said conduit for cutting off the supply of water from the reservoir, a second conduit leading from the boiler at a point below said opening to said first named conduit at a point intermediate said valve and said jacket, and a valve in said second conduit for cutting off the supply of ,water from said boiler, and a conduit leading from the upper portion of said jacket to the boiler at a point above said opening and a check valve in said last named conduit.
