' Filed Feb. 5, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 2li, 1930 UNITED STATES JOSEPH L. WHATLEY, OF HOMESTEAD, PENNSYLVANIA MECHANICAL TOY Appli-cation filed February 5, 1930.
This invention relates to a mechanical toy, the general object of the invention being to provide the toy with a reel having a spring connected therewith and a string or cable 5 connected with the reel, so that by unwinding the string from the reel, the spring will be wound up and then by holding one end of the string, the spring and the reel will cause the toy to move toward the held end of the string as it winds the string upon the reel.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specically pointed out in the appended claims.
Tn describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure l, but showing the string unwound from the reel.
Figure t is a view of the spring for the stop member.
Figure 5 is a face view of the stop member on the string.
Figure G is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
In these dra-wings, the letter A indicates al toy automobile or other Wheeled vehicle and the numeral l indicates a reel rotatably mounted on a hollow shaft 2 rigidly held in the body of the toy by having its ends formed with tabs 2 which are fastened to the body,
' *i0 the shaft passing through holes in the body.
A spring 3 is placed in the reel and has one end connected with a part of the reel, as shown at 4, and its other end connected with a tab 5 punched from the shaft. Tabs l punched from the shaft hold the reel in place.
A string or cable 6 has one end connected with the reel, as shown at 7, and this cable passes through a hole S in the front part of the toy and has a ring 9 connected with its free end. These parts are so arranged that Serial No. l26,141.
the unwinding of the spring will ind the cable or string upon the reel and by pulling the string, the spring will be wound. rihus by pulling the string while holding the toy stationary, the spring will be wound and then by placing the toy upon a surface and holding the free end of the string stationary, the spring will cause the string to be wound on the reel so that the toy will move toward the free end of the string.
A disk 10 is slidably mounted on the string and a spring ll is carried by the disk and frictionally engages the string and acts as an adjustable stop by engaging the front of the toy, as shown in Figure 3, to prevent the ring 9 from being pulled against the front of the toy, thus preventing injury to the hand of the user and also acting to regulate the distance the toy will travel along the string.
The edges of the reel are beaded, as at l5, to prevent cutting of the string.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
Tt is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of 'the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:-
1. A toy of the class described comprising a vehicle7 a spring actuated reel therein, a string connected with the reel and passing through the front of the vehicle, the spring tending to wind the string on the reel, whereby by pulling the string, the spring will be wound and then by holding the free end of the string stationary and placing the vehicle on a surface, the vehicle will be caused to travel towart. the stationary end of the string.
2. A toy of the class described comprising a vehicle, a springactuated reel therein, a string connected with the reel and passing through the front of the vehicle, the spring tending to wind the string on the reel, whereby by pulling the string, the spring will be wound and then by holding the free end of the string stationary and placing the Vehicle on a surface, the Vehicle Will be caused to travel toward the stationary end of the string, and an adjustable stop on thestring for engaging the front of the vehicle.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature.
JOSEPH L. WHATLEY.
