Description

Oct. 21, 1930. G. H. MAGRATH BOBBIN CLUTCH Filed Aug. 2'7. 1.928
, spring tension.
hereinafter.
Patented Oct. 21, 1930 UNITED STATES GEORGE H. MAGRATH, 0F WHITINSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS BOBBIN CLUTCH Application filed August 27, 1928. Serial No. 302,204.
This invention relates to a clutch for se curing a bobbin or other weft carrier on a spinning or twisting spindle.
Theobjects of my present invention are to provide a clutch formed. of a minimum number of parts and to provide a construction whichshall be yieldingly self-centering, which will accommodate itself to slight variations in the diameter of the bobbin recess, which may be easily and economically manufactured, and which comprises very few and simple parts which may be readily assembled.
Other objects of the invention will appear Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is aside elevation of a spindle having a preferred form of my bobbin clutch applied thereto, and shown in central section;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the casing member; y I
Fig. 3 is a plan thereof.
I have shown a spindle having a blade 10 and whirl 11 on which a bobbin B is mounted. The whirl 11 has a recess 12 in its upper face for a purpose to be described.
A cap or casing member 14 is mounted on the blade 10 at a substantial distance above the whirl 11 and its lower end is seated in the recess 12.
The casing member is preferably forged from a single blank of spring steel, and comprises an integral cylinder 21 and driving fingers 22.
The cylinder is out along its sides to form the vertical driving fingers 22 which are in tegral with it near the bottom and free at the top. The fingers 22 are bent or offset to the outlines shown in Fig. 2. The cylinder 21, will extend straight upward around the axis of the spindle from the recess 12 in which its lower end fits. The offset upper ends 28 of the fingers 22 engage the inside surface of the passage in the bobbin. They are'sprung outwardly and are held under It will thus appear that my improved bobbin clutch comprises only a single piece, the
member 14, and that there are no movable parts except the spring centering fingers 22, which have a slight swinging movement at their upper ends.
When a bobbin is placed on the spindle, as indicated in 1, the bobbin is centered by the fingers 22 and recess 12, as well as by the head of the casing 14. The driving fingers 22 yicldingly engage the inner wall of the bobbin and form effective driving contact therewith.
A bobbin clutch thus formed has no parts capable of displacement or mail-adjustment and is particularly well adapted for the purposes intended. Being formed in one piece it can bemade easily by well known methods and none of-its parts have to be fitted together, so all of them are produced in exactly the sameform. The smooth outer faces i of the fingers 22 make it easy to dislodge and remove bunches of yarn wound thereon.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, other wise than as set forth in the claims, but,
clutch consisting of a single piece of thin spring steel comprising a cap perforated at the center to receive the blade of a spindle and having a cylindrical portion extending below to be seated in a recess in the whirl and having driving fingers extending upwardly from the bottom andprmectmg beyond the cylinder to engage the bobbin.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
enonen H. MAGRATH.
