COMMODE SEAT.
Filed NOV. 29, 1929 IL'II'II'I'II. "lvl/flll'l I Mb 40 f 3 Ellfiroadf INVENTOR ATTORNEY mounted upon the top of a commode, and a Patented Sept. 39, 1930 PATENT OFFICE HOLLIS L. BROAIDFOOT, OF FLORENCE, ALABAMA GOMMOIDE SEAT Application filed November 29, 1929. Serial No. 410,553.
This invention relates to an I improved combined commode seat and cover and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this classwhich will be so'constructed as to be devoid of any such means for holding the cover upon theseat, which means would be liable to become fouledand render the device unsanitary.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for retaining the cover upon the seat, which means will be devoid of any moving elements, but which will function automatically simply through rotation of the cover upon the seat.
Another object of the invention is to provide a commode seat especially adapted for childrens use. i
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the corresponding parts throughout the several 7 views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through the combined seat and cover embodying the invention, the same being combined handle and retaining means being shown in elevation.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the device, the view illustrating in broken lines'the contour of the opening which is provided in the seat. f
Figure 3 is a vertical front to rear sec tional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 illustrating the cover and the parts associated therewith in locked or retained position in full lines and released or disengaged position in dotted-dines.
Figure a is a plan view of one of the blanks fromwhich the'handle and retaining means are formed.
The, device embodying the invention is capable of general application to commodes,
such a vessel being shown in the drawing, and indicated by the numeral 1, andincludes a seat which is indicated by the numeral 2 and which in itself is substantially circular in form and has a downturned periphery 3 adapted to fit over and engage about the upturned portion of the commode as best shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing. This seat may be made of any material, such for example, as enameled iron, porcelain or the like, and in accordance with the invention, it is formed with a symmetrically shaped opening a which in general contour is elliptical, the seat being molded, cast or otherwise formed so that the opening is surrounded by a downwardly and inwardly Y curvingflange, indicated in general by the numeral 5 and, by reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3 and by comparison of Figures 1 and 3, it will be observed that the lateral portions of the flange 5, which portions are indicated generally, by the numeral 6, are extended downwardly a greater distance than the front and rear portions which are indicated by the numeral 7, and that the lower edge of this flange throughout these portions is extended on a gradually curved line. At this point it may be remarkedthat the contour of the seat and particularly the form of the opening therein, in itself constitutes a novel feature of the invention, and that the same might be employed without the use of a cover.
However the invention contemplates the use of a cover and the construction of the same will now be described. The cover cor-.1 prises a fiat circular plate 8 which may be of any desired marginal contour, although preferably circular, so as to adapt it to be disposed upon the upper side of the seat 2 in concentric relation thereto. The cover of a diameter somewhat greater than the maximum diameter of the opening in the seat 2 so that when the cover is symmetrically arranged upon the top of the seat the opening will be completely closed or covered. The combined handle and retaining means for the cover is preferably formed from two blanks, one of which blanks is shown in F i gure 4; of the drawing and is of sheetmetal 'course of manufacture, the po tions of the body of the blank, which 1 g t be divided by a line connecting the edges of the extensions 10' at either side thereof, and the outer end margins of the body are struck .u p so as to provide portions l'l tending vertically from the intermediate portion 12 which constitute the under side of the handle and which is longitudinally curved as shown in Figure 1. The body of the blank is lil-tewise formed to provic e inwardly projecting flanges 13 at the upper edges of the side portions 11 and these flanges have their free longitudinal edges'either meeting or positioned close to each other.
The body "portion" of the member 9 comprises the handle portion and the extensions 10 thereof constitute means for assisting "other means, to be presently described, in holding the cover upon the seat and likewise in holding the handle member and retaining means in place upon the cover, and as shown 111 Figure 1 of the drawing; the extens ons 10 are inserted dowmvardly through slots 1% formed in the cover 8 at diametrically opposlte sides of the center of said cover, and,
immediately below the under side of the cover, these portions are curved outwardly and downwardly as indicated by the numeral 15, so that they will restrained. from being drawn upwardly through the openings I4 when the handle is grasped'for lifting the cover. The lower ends of the portions lfiare provided with outstanding terminals 16 which constitute latch lingers, engageable be mouth the lower edge of theflange 5 and it will he observed by reference to Figure 1 that the portions 15 of the resilient handle ,mmber are'normally sprung in opposite directions, so that'their lower en s, coi'islitute lugs 16,.will enga e with certamty beneath the lower edge of the flange 5. l'l owevcr, the outward spreading of the portions 15 is somewhat restricted so that while these portions, at their lug ends 16, engage with surety below the edge of the flange when the same is rotated to the, osition shown. in Figures 1, Qand 3 of the rawings, when the handle member isgr'asped and the cover is rotated one quarter turn, the lugs 16 will beopposite the shallower portions of the flange 5. the same ridin beneath the lower edge of the flange, and the cover may then be freely liftedfrom the seat.
As a means for holding and bracing the handle 17 with Yes out to the cover 8, a strip ofsheet metal having a bend ,to form an arcvention is of considerably less diameter than the top of the commode upon which the seat is arranged, andtherefore the seat of the inyentiton is especially adaptedfor childrens use.
lVhat I claim is 1. In acombined commode seat; and cover, a seat proper for; disposal upon the open top of a commode and'having an elliptical opening therein, cover for the seat comprising a substantially flat body of greater diameter than the openingand disposable upon the seat and capable of rotation thereon, a handle upon the cover for rotation thereof upon the seat, and including resilient .t-erminals extending downwardly from the cover in opposite directions and provided at their. lower ends with lugs engageable beneath theseat at opposite sides of the opening therein upon rotation of the cover to one position.
2. In a combined commode seat and cover, a seat proper'for disposal uponthe open top of .a commode and having an elliptical opening therein, a cover for the seat comprising a substantially flat body of greater diameter than the opening and disposable upon the seat and capable of rotation thereon, and retaining means upon the cover foizholding it upon the seat, comprising resilient members extending downwardlyfrom the-cover in opposite directions and provided at their lower ends with lugs vcngageable beneath the seat at opposite sides of the opening therein. the lugs being spaced apart a distance less than the maximum diameter of the opening, the
flange at thegreater diameter of the opening, and likewised ue to the fact that the lugs are spaced apart a distance less than the maximum diameter of said openings.
3. In a combined commode seat and cover, a seat proper for disposalupon'the open top of a commode and having an ellipticalppening therein, a cover for the ,seat com risi a circular, substantially flat body disposable upon the seat and capable for rotation thereon, and a combined handle and retaining means upon the cover comprising a tubular handle member having resilient portions extending from its opposite ends through the said cover and provided at their lower ends with outstanding lugs for engagement beneath the flange of the seat, and a holding and bracing member having an arcuate intermediate portion housed within the tubular portion of the handle and terminal portions extending in opposite directions therefrom and bearing against the upper side of the seat.
4. In a combined commode seat and cover, a seat proper for the disposal upon the open top of a commode and having an elliptical opening therein, a cover for the seat comprising a substantially flat body of greater diameter than the opening and disposable upon the seat and capable of rotation thereon, and retaining means upon the cover for holding it upon the seat, comprising a handle member for rotating the cover and including resilient members extending clownwardly from the cover in opposite directions and provided at their lower ends with lugs engageable beneath the seat at opposite sides of the opening therein, the said seat having a downwardly extending flange surrounding said opening, the portions of the flange at and adjacent the minor diameter of the opening being of greater depth than the portions at the greater diameter of the opening, whereby when the cover is rotated, the said lugs will be caused to disengage from the lower edge of the flange both by reason of the upward curvature of the portions of the flange at the grea or diameter 0t the opening, and likewise due to the fact that the lugs are spaced apart a distance less than the maximum diameter of said opening, the portions of the flange at the shorter diameter of the opening being of greater depth than the portions of the flange at the longer diameter of the opening, and the said lower edge portions of the flange being continuously curved.
In testimony w iereof I affix my signature.
