My invention relates to portable lamps;

and more especially to""thatlclass of lamps commonly known as hand "ortables, and

adapted particularly for use in garages, factories, etc.

It is common practice to provide a hook on the hand portable for hanging it in any convenient place or on the machinery to be inspected. This hook, however, does not hold the lamp rigidly in the desired position to throw the light to the best advantage. This is especially true around intricate machinery.

Most hand ortables are provided with a reflector which makes it especially desirable that the portable should be easily clamped in any desired position. p

One of the objectsof my invention is to provide a simple and effective means whereby a hand portable may be clamped in any desired position and one in which the clamping means is adjustable with relation toth'e lamp.

Realizing that my invention may be varied in its physical embodiment without departing from the spirit of the invention, I desire it to be understood that the specific con struction and form herein shown is to be taken as illustrative and not in a limited sense.

In the accompanying drawings like portions of the device are designated bv like characters throughout the several figures.

Figure 1 isa side elevation of my invention used in. connection with an ordinary hand portable having a wire lamp guard.

Referring now to the drawings in detail,

the device as illustrated consists of an ordinary hand portable having a handle 1 pro- -vided with a suitable socket :for holding the lamp 2, .which is protected by'means of the wireguard 3. The usual reflector 4 is supported in one side of the guard.

A bracket 5 issecured to the wires 6 oi the guard 3 by means of the ears 7 which are bent around the wires and pressed securely in place. This bracket is also provided with upturned lugs 8 spaced a short distance apart and having holes 9 thru their upper ends to receiye the ball 10 which is in turn secured to the clamping member 11 by means of the rivet 12.

In assembly the lugs 8 will spring apart sufliciently to allow the ball to be inserted between them and in alignment with the holes 9; it is then clamped in position by means of the screw 13.

The clamping member 11 is preferably forming integral jaws and handles and pivoted together by means ofthe rivet 16, the two parts being held in operative position by means of the spring 17 It will be noted that by means'of'the ball and socket joint as illustrated the light may be turned to any position desired to suit the convenience of the user, after the device is clamped in position. v 7

It has been found in practice that this construction is very reliable and convenient and does not easily get out of order.

In the modified form shown in Figures 4 and 5 the clamp 11 is secured rigidly to the guard. A sheet metal strip 18 is spot welded to the part 14 of the clamp 11 or may be made integral therewith, this strip is then secured to the Wires 6 of the guard 3 byclamping the ends 19 around the wires in the same manner as previously described for the bracket 5.

Having thus fully described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by'Let- 'trs Patent:

1. A hand portable comprising a means for supporting a lamp, a wire guard around said lamp, a bracket on said guard comprising a single piece of sheet metal having a plurality of down turned ears clamped around the wires of said guard, 21 pair of oppositely extending ears for clamping a ball, a ball between said cars, means for controlling the friction on said ball, and a clamp mounted on said ball and comprising a. pair of integral jaw and handle members, one of said members being secured to said ball.

2. A hand portable comprising a means for supporting a lamp, a wire guard around said lamp, a bracket on said guard comprising a single piece of sheet metal having outwardly extending ears clamped around the wires of said guard, upwardly extending ears for supporting a clamp, and a clamp supported on said upwardly extending ears.
