When such board is made of cardboard or other stiff material, it is possibleto fold the margin of the cover directly over, the edge of the board; but, when the board is thin and weak, it is difficult to make asatisfacto'ry' fold in this manner. . The operation of the machine is briefly as follows:-The toe end of the heel-and-toe treadle, which'is attached front and rear respectively to the treadle rods 81 and 83, is depressed enough to raise the corner guides 27;
somewhat above the table 17 but notlenough .to start the one-revolution shaft 85. Ajpiece of work, comprising a backing 100 and a. cover 200 to the projecting marginrof which'a coat of cement has been applied, is presentedbeneath the corner guides and'the toe end of the treadlereleased tofpermit the corner guides to fall; The work is-now manipulated to cause the corner guides to contact withthestraightedges-of'the backingadjac'ent to the corner. The heel end of the treadle is :depressed to pull down'the arm 95 and with it the sleeve I i 39 so as to-cause the forming plate 21 to press the work against the table. The arm 95 "is locked in its lowered position by the catch 107 and the forming plate121 thus held down during the operations illustrated in Figures 7 2 to '11. The toe end of the treadle is then depressed to its'full'extent'and released. This imparts one revolution to the shaft and. causes the following movements. The folder c I slide 63 moves forward,las shownin Figures 1 to 11, and causes the two p'arts of-the folder 19 to move forward andto swing-about their pivots 29 by reason. of the fact thatthe upper ends of pins 111 carried by the tails of the folder parts run 'insuitably vshapedgrooves formed in the under side of a cover plate 113 (Fig. 1). The cam track member 115.;(Fig. 1) in which runs ablock pivoted to therear end o-f'the rod, 37 which carries-the forming plate 21, isthen swung bodily forward to. T move the forming plate 21- outfrom beneath the folded over margin ofthe cover, as shown in-Figure 111 The catch 107 which holds'the forming plate carrier 39fdown is tripped by the'arm 109, and thetable 17 raised to press the fold, as shownin Figure'12, and finally the parts return to their normal positions as shown inFigure 1.

presented in succession to the corner folding mechanism, which has. beendescribed above, and then the four straight-edge portions of the work are presented to the'straight-edge foldlng mechanism comprising the table 13 and folder 15 (Fig. 1). Although it is stated above that the corners are folded first and then the straight edgesQthis order of procedure may be reversed, if desired, by folding the straight edges first up to points spaced from the corners and then folding the corners.
