In the drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is. a top plan view of the central portion of a body bolster of a railway car, illustrating my improvements in connection therewith, the bolster being partly broken away. Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view corresponding substantially to the line 2-2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View corresponding substantially to the line 3+8 of Figure 2. And Figure 4 is a detailed perspective view of one of the main sections of my improved center pin.
In said drawings, 10 indicates generally the body bolster of the railway car and 11 the truck bolster hereof. The body bolster is prOVided vi ththe usual bearingenlargement 12 at the bottom side thereof, which has a sub stantially spherical bearing surface at apted to cooperate with hearing i'neans onthe truck bolster. The truck bolster has abearing seat 13 of well known-form provided. on the top thereof, a bearing 1 block 14 bein disposed in said seat.v The bearing block l lhas a concave spherical bearing surface cooperating with the bearing surface of the projection .12 of the body bolster. The bearing projee tion 12 of the body bolster is provided with a relatively shallowcentral socket 15 into which an upstanding central enlargement 16 of the bearing plate 14 extends. The body and truck bolster members are provided with alined pockets 1'? and 18, respectively, which are adapted to accommodate the head portions of the center pin.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the body and truck bolsters with alined openings 19 and of circular cross section. As shown, the openings 19 and 20 are of smaller diameter than the pockets 17 and 18, thereby providing annular shoulders adjacent these openings. The bearing plate 14: is also provided with an opening 21 alined with the openings 19 and 20 and corresponding in diameter thereto. The openings 19, 20 and 21 together form the center pin receiving openings of the two bolsters.
My improved center pin construction comprises broadly three main sections A-AA, three filler sections B-Bl3 and a retaining element C.
The main sections A are of similar design, each comprising a shank portion 22 and enlargements 23-23 at the top and bottom ends of the shank portion formin head members. On the outer side, the shank portion 22 of each section A has a cylindrical surface portion 24: adapted to fit the curved inner surface of the center pin receiving openings 19, 20 and 21. As most clearly shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4t, each section A is of sector-like cross section and has converging flat inner faces 2525. The head members 23-23 provide flange-like sections of curved form adapted to engage with corresponding portions of the annular shoulders of the body and truck bolsters respectively. The sections A are of such a size that they may be entered through the pin receiving openings of the bolsters either by insertion from the bottom of the truck bolster or from the top of the body bolster. The sections A may be assembled with the bolsters by inserting the same in succession, one at a time, into the openings of the bolsters and then spreading the same apart so as to engage the shoulders formed by the heads 23 with the corresponding annular shoulders of the two bolsters.
The filler sections l3 are of similar design and correspond in number to the main sections. As most clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, one of said filler sections is interposed between two adjacent main s ions A and holds the same separated and in such a position that the shoulders thereof a re maintained in engagement with the annular shoulders of the bolsters. The liller sections E are in the form of relatively heavy plates each having a shank portion having lugs 2T-27 at opposite ends thereof forming head members adapted to engage with the annular shoulders of the body and truck bolsters respectively. The plates B are of such a size that when applied between the three main sections of the pin, they, together with the main sections, entirely fill the center pin re ceiving openings of the bolsters. The outer edges of the sections B are rounded off so as to fit the walls of the center pin receiving openings and the curvature of the rounded edges corresponds to the curvature of the outer surfaces of the shank portions of the main sections of the pin. At the inner end each of the filler sections B is vertically grooved as indicated at 28 to accommodate the retaining element C. Each filler section B also has the corners at the inner end cut away as indicated at 29-29 to thereby facilitate assembling of these sections with the main sections of the pin.
As most clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the head members 23 of the main sections A are slightly cut away at opposite ends along the vertical edges thereof, as indicated at 3030 to facilitate passing of these head sections through the pin receiving openings 19, 20 and 21 of the bolsters.
The retaining element C is preferably in the form of a bolt having the shank thereof disposed between the inner ends of the filler sections B and seated in grooves 28 thereof. At the upper end the bolt C is provided with the usual head and a washer 31 is interposed between the head and the sections of the pin. The belt is locked to the pin by means of a nut 32 at the bottom end thereof, a washer similar to the washer 31 being interposed between the nut and the bottom end of the pin. The washers 31 at the top and bottom ends of the pin overlap the sections A and B so as to hold the same against relative displacement in a vertical direction. As will be evident, the bolt C thus in addition to holding the parts of the pin assembled also functions as a spreading element for holding the sections B in outermost position in shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of the bolsters.
In applying the sections of the pin to the bolsters, the same may be entered either through the pocket 17 of the body bolster or the pocket 18 of the truck bolster. The sections A, assuming the same to be applied through the bottom of the truck bolster, are inserted one at a time, the enlarged head portion 23 at the upper end being passed through the openings 20, 21 and 19 of the bolsters. Each section A, after being inserted through the openings of the bolsters is displaced laterally outwardly to bring the head portions thereof in shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of the two bolsters. As will be evident, by displacing each section before the succeeding section is applied, ample clearance is provided in the pin receiving openings of the bolsters to permit passage therethrough of the head portion 23 of the next section to be applied. In car construction, the Combination with body and truck bolsters having alined Center pin receiving openings, each of said bolsters being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent the outer end of the open ing thereof; of a sectional center pin including a plurality of main sections and a filler section, each main section having shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of both bolsters, said filler section being insertible between certain of said main sections after the main sections have been brought into shouldered engagement with the bolsters, said filler section serving as a spreading and retaining member to hold said main sections in said shouldered engagement; and combined filler and retaining means for holding said parts assembled.
6. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each of said bolsters being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent the outer end of the opening thereof; of a sectional center pin including a plurality of main sections and a filler section, said main sections each having shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of both bolsters and said filler section being interposed between certain of said main sections to hold the same spread apart and in shouldered engagement, said filler section also having shouldered engagement with both bolsters, said filler section being insertible between said main sections after said main sections have been brought into shouldered engagement with said bolsters; and means for holding the parts assembled and maintaining said filler section in shouldered engagement with said bolsters.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each of said bolsters being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent the outer end of the opening thereof; of a center pin including a shank member having head members at opposite ends thereof having shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of the bolsters throughout the extent of said shoulders, said pin being composed of a plurality of sections, each section having a shank portion and head portions at opposite ends of the shank portion having shouldered engagement with both bolsters, said sections being insertible through said openings in succession to assemble the pin; and means for holding said sections of the pin assembled and maintaining the shouldered engagement thereof with said annular shoulders.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each of said bolsters being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent the outer end of the opening thereof; of a center pin including a plurality of main sections each having a shank portion and arcuate flanges at opposite ends, a plurality of filler members corresponding in number to said main sections; and a central retaining element, said filler members each having a shank portion and lugs at opposite ends thereof, each filler member being interposed between two adjacent main sections, said central retaining element being interposed between said filler members at the inner ends thereof to hold the same separated, said flanges of the main sections and said lugs of the filler members together forming complete head members at opposite ends of the pin having shouldered engagement with said annular shoulders of both bolsters throughout the extent of said shoulders.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each of said bolsters being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent the outer end of the opening thereof; of a sectional center pin including a plurality of main sections, filler sections and a spreading member, said main sections being of sector shape form in horizontal section, said filler sections being of plate-like form, a filler section being interposed between each two adjacent main sections, said main sections and filler sections together forming a complete cylindrical pin, each of said main sections and filler sections having a central shank portion and head portions at opposite ends thereof, said head portions at opposite ends having shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of said bolsters respectively; and retaining means comprising a bolt extending centrally through said pin and holding said filler members spaced apart, said bolt having shouldered engagement at opposite ends with the sections of said pin to prevent vertical separation thereof.
10. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each of said bolsters being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent the outer end of the opening thereof; of a center pin including a shank member having head members at opposite ends thereof having shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of the bolsters throughout the entire 360 of each of said annular shoulders, said pin being composed of a plurality of sections, each section having a shank portion and head portions at opposite ends of the shank portions having shouldered engagement with both bolsters, each of said sections being insertible through openings in assembling the pin with the bolsters and a central filler member headed at the upper end and having a shank portion disposed between said sections for holding the same a spread apart and in shouldered engagement with the annular shoulders of both bolsters,
