One object of the invention is to provide a building in which it is necessary to pass through a numberof rooms or chambers in order to reach a vault wherein money and 1o other objects of value are stored for safe keeping, and provide an improved arrangement of doors normally retained opened and adapted to drop to closed` positions when the protecting apparatus isV in operation.

The building, which is indicated in vgeneral by the numeral l, represents a'portion 95 of a .bank building or other building in which valuable objects are stored, and the main entrance chamber or lobby of this building is indicated by the numeral 2. The building may beof any height desired and 10 back of the chamber 2 is located a vault 3 having doors 4t which may be of any construction desired, and equipped with locking means including dials 5. This vault is separated from the chamber 2 by a shaft (3 which extends vertically in the building and has its upper end opening into a chamber 7 and its lower end opening into a chamber 8 which extends beneath the chamber 2.
A chamber 9 which resembles an elevator ear and may be referred to as a movable chamber is mounted in the shaft G to slide vertically therein and from the top of this chamber rises a frame 10 including a cross bar 11 to which is secured a cable 12 similar to the cables usually attached to elevator cars. This cable will be wound upon a drum of hoisting mechanism (not shown) and within the chamber is mounted a control boX 13 of a conventional construction so that when the chamber has been dropped to the bottom of the shaft it may be moved upwardly and restored to its normal position shown in Fig, 2. It will be understood that the hoisting mechanism will berendered inoperative at night so that a burglar standing in the movable compartment when it drops to the bottom of the shaft will be prevented from actuatingr the control 13 and restoring the movable compartment to its normal position. T his compartment is open at its front and back so that under normal conditions, an employee of the bank may pass through the compartment and b v opening the doors 4t open the safe or vault.
If a burglar opens the door or doors mounted at the outer entrance 15 of the chamber 2 and approaches the vault with the intention of robbing the bank, it is desired to confine the burglar within the building, and in order 'to do so, there have been provided doors 16 which are normally disposed in pockets 17 and adapted to move downwardly through tracks 18 into closing relation to the entrance 15.
Ordinarily the doors 16 are to be retained in an elevated position Within the pocket 17 and in order to do so there have been provided cables Q2 which are attached to eyes 23 carried bv the doors. These cables extend upwardly and are engaged over guide pulleys 24 mounted in brackets'Q rising from the floor of the compartment or chamber 7, and after being engaged with the guide pulleys, the cables are extended horizontally through guide troughs 2G disposed horizontally and supported upon struts Q7. These troughs diverge towards the shaft and their rear ends, which are enlarged to form mouths 2S, are disposed adjacent opposite sides of the shaft, as clearly shown in 5. lt will thus be seen that hooks provided at the upper rear ends of the cables may be engaged with lips 30 at the upper ends of tubes 31 mounted vertically in the shaft against the side walls thereof at opposite sides of the movable compartment, as shown in Fig, 7.

It will thus be seen that the weights will slide vertically in the pockets 39 when the :notable chamber 9 moves in the sha ft, but will travel in an opposite direction to the direction of the movable Chamber.
Releasing of the hooks 29 and movement of the latches to release the weights, is to be lill effective by the weight of a person standing `within the movable compartment. In order that this may take place, the floor 48 of the movable compartment is formed separately from the side walls thereof and across the under face of the floor is secured a fulcrum bar 49. This fulcrum bar projects from op-- posite sides of the floor and has rounded or circular portions50 constituting trunnions which are rotatably received in bearings 51 firmly secured to the side walls of the movable member. A bracing strip 52 extends below the fulcrum bar and has its ends secured to the lower ends of the bearings. This strip, not only serves to brace the bearings, but also constitutes a bumper adapted to strike the plunger 53 of a dash pot 54, provided at the bottom of the shaft in order to absorb shocks and prevent damage to the movable compartment when it drops to the bottom of the shaft.
Under normal conditions, the floor is to be held stationary in a horizontal position, and in order to do so there have been provided locking strips 55 which are slidably mounted in pockets 56 extending vertically in the shaft at opposite sides of the movable chamber. These locking strips have their lower ends formed with forks 57- between which tongues 58 at the ends of the fulcrum bar are to be engaged, and it will be readily understood from anrinspection of Figs. 1 and 5 that when the locking strips are lowered, for engagement with the tongues, it will be imf possible for the fulcrum bar to turn in the bearings. These locking strips have racks 59 Vformed along the rear edges of their upper portions for engagement by pinions 60 fixed upon a shaft 61 mounted in bearings at the upper ends of standards 62, and intermediate the length, the shaft carries a handwhe'el 63 in order that it may be rotated and the locking strips shifted vertically. Therefore, by rotating the shaft in the proper direction the strips may be moved upwardly out of engage'- ment with the tongues, `as shown in Fig. 3, and the floor of the movable chamber will be free totilt out of a vertical position to either the tilted position shown in Fig. 8, or that shown in Fig. 4.
As previously stated, the hooks 29 and weights 38 are to be released according to the direction in which the floor of the movable chamber tilts and in order to do so, the floor has secured against its under face abutment arms 64 which project from opposite sides of the floor below the lower ends of the tubes or pockets 31, and other arms 65 which project forwardly into position to engage the larms 46 of the latches 48. Side arms 66 extend from the arms 65 and are adapted to engage beneath the side walls ofthe movable chamber and limit tilting movement of its floor in one direction. Rods 6'? are slidably mounted in the pockets 31 and are of such length that when they are engaged by the arms 64 and moved upwardly thereby, their upper ends will engage the bills ofthehooks 29 and forcethese hooks upwardly out of engagement with the keepers or tongues 30 rising from the upper ends of the pockets. It will thus be seen that when the door of the movable chamber is tilted in one direction, the rods 67 will be shiftedupwardly to release the hooks 29 and allow the doors 16 to drop to a closed position in guarding relating to the entrance 15, and that when the floor is tilted in an opposite direction the latches 43 will be released to move the weights and allow the movable chamber to drop to the bottom of the shaft within the compartment 8 during which movement the door 34 will follow the movable chamber downwardly into guarding relation to the doorway 82.
When a. bank building is constructed in ac cordance with this invention, it is necessary to pass through the movableV compartment in order to reach the vault. During the day time the securing strips 55 are 1n a lowered position and since they engage the tonguesV projecting from the fulcrum bar, the floor will be held stationary. At night time, and on Sundays and holidays when a bank vis closed, it is desired to `prevent a burglar or other unauthorized person .from having access to the vault. Therefore, at closing time, an employee of the bank enters the chamber 7 and by rotating the shaft 61 through the medium of its hand wheel raises the securing strips, as shown in Fig. 3, so that their forks no longer engage the tongues at the ends of the fulcrum bar. This sets the safety mechanism in position for operation.
lf a burglar succeeds in opening the doors 14 or by any other method enters the chamber 2, and then opens the doors 88, it is necessary for him to pass through the compartment 9 in order to reach the vault. As soon as the intruder steps upon the floor 48, which is now permitted to tilt, the pressure will swing the forward end portion of this floor downwardly until such movement is stopped by the arms 64 striking the lower ends of the rods 67 and forcing the rods upwardly. As the rods move upwardly, their upper ends engage the bills of the hooks 29 to move them out of engagement with the keepers 30 and this releases the hooks .and allows the cables 22 to slide through the troughs 26, and the doors 16 burglar walks past the fulcrum bar and this causes the floor to tilt in an opposite direction until the arms 65 strike the arms 46 of the latches a3. Yhe cables may then be grasped by a number ot persons in order to raise the doors 16, or these cables may be drawn upwardly by means of a suitable windlass, until the hooks Q9 may be again engaged with the tongues S0. Before the doors l@ are raised, the shaft Gl will be rotated in order to move the securin strips downwardly for engagement with the tongues of the tulcrum bar in order to secure the floor in a horizontal position. The mechanism will now be restored to its original position and the vault may be safely approached by authorized persons.

In a bank building, an entrance chamber having a doorway, a strong room, a subchamber, a vertical shaft between said entrance chamber and strong room extending downwardly into said subchamber, a doorway being provided between the shaft and entrance chamber, doors movable into and out of closing relation to said doorways, a chamber movable in said shaft from a normal position establishing communication between the entrance chamber and strong room to a lowered position within the subchamber, means to releasably retain the door for the entrance chamber opened, means -to retain the door of said shalt opened when the movable chamber in its normal position, means to releasably secure the movable chamber in its normal position, the floor of said movable chamber being pivoted ii'itermediate its Aliront and rear ends, means to releasably secure the floor against tilting movement, means to release the door for the doorway of the entrance chamber when the floor is tilted in one direction, and means to release the movable chamber when the floor is tilted in an opposite direction.
In a bank building, an entrance cha'mber having a doorway, a strong room, a vertical shatt between said entrance chamber and strong room extending below the entrance chamber and strong room and having a doorway opening into said entrance chamber, doors for said doorways slidable from a raised position above the doorways to a lowered closed position, a chamber movable in said shaft from a normal position establishing communication between the entrance chamber and strong room to a lowered position at the bottom of the shalt, means to releasably retain the door tor the entrance chamber opened, means to releasably secure the movable chamber in its normal position, the door for the shaft entrance being engaged with said movable chamber and moving to a closed position when the movable chamber descends, means actuated by a person entering the movable chamber for releasing the movable chamber, and means to render the releasing means inopeiative.
4. In a bank building, an entrance chamber having a doorway, a strong room, a vertical shaft between said entrance chamber and strong room extending below the entrance cham-ber and strong room and having adoorway opening into said entrance chamber, doors for said doorways slidable from a raised position above the doorways to a lowered closed position, a chamber movable in said shalt from a normal position establishing communication between the entrance chamber and strong room to a lowered position a't the bottom of the shaft, the door for the shaft entrance resting upon the movable chamber andrmoving therewith to a closed position'when the movable chamber is lowered, the fioor of said movable chamber being pivotally mounted, and means actuated by movement of the iioor to release the movable chamber and door for the entrance chamber.
5. In a bank building, an entrance chamber having a doorway,a strong room, a vertical shaft between said entrance chamber and strong room, extending downwardly below the same and having a doorway opening into the entrance chamber, a chamber movable in said shaft from a normal position establishing communication between the entrance chamber and strong room to a lowered position below the same, a door for the shaft entrance resting upon the movable chamber and moving downwardly to a closed position when the movable chamber is lowered, weights slidable in vertical tracks at opposite sides of the shaft entrance, cables connecting the weights and movable chamber and trained over guides above the shaft, latches movably mountedv and engageable with the weights to retain the movable chainber in its normal position, doors for the doorway of the entrance chamber slidable from a raised to a closed position, cables' extending upwardly from the doors for the entrance chamber and engaged with guides' and extending horizontally over the shaft and carrying hooks at their ends, means engageable by said hooks to retain the doorsraised, and means Y to release said latches and hooks adapted to be actuated by a person entering the movable chamber.

In a bank building, an entrance chamber having a doorway, a strong room, a vertical shaft between said entrance chamber and strong room, extending'downwardly below the same and having a doorway opening into the entrance chamber, a chamber movable in said shaft from a normal position establishing communication between the entrance chamber and strong room to a lowered position below the same, a door for the shaft entrance resting upon the movable chamber and moving downwardly to a closed position when the movable chamber is lowered, weights slidable in vertical tracks at opposite sides of the shaft entrance. cables connecting the weights and movable chamber and trained over guides above the shaft, doors for the doorway of the entrance chainber slidable from a raised to a closedposition, cables extending upwardly from the doors for the entrance chamber and engaged with guides and extending horizontally over' the shaft and carrying hooks at theirnends, latches to engage said weights and retain the movable chamber in its normal position, keepers engageable by said hooks to retain the doors forl the entrance chamber open, plungers extending vertically in said shaft and slidably mounted, a floor for the movable chamber pivotally mounted intermediate its front and rear ends, means tomove the plungers upwardly and release the hooks when the floor is tilted in one direction, means to move the latches and release said weights when the floor is tilted in an opposite direction, and means to releasably secure the oor against tilting.
