A wedge for journal bearings comprising a body portion provided on its under side with a horizontal bearing face to cooperate with a brass and a pair of downwardly projecting side portions each provided with an inclined bearing face, said wedge being provided with a pocket at the front ends of the bearing faces, said pocket extending into the side portions of the wedge, the front wall of said pocket forming a flange connected with both the body and the side portions of the wedge and providing a pair of lateral hand-holds approximately triangular in shape and spaced from the brass when the brass and wedge are in assembled relation.
