This invention relates to identification means for use with a shipping system, and more especially to a way bill, a receipt for the shipper, a safety reference label, a de- 5 livery sheet and a way hill reception envelope, all combined into a single unitary structure.

The purpose of the invention is to provide in such a system, a combination of such articles in a single unit, (with the exception of the envelope) such as will eliminate a plurality of separate identification slips, sheets or stubs, which will result in increased efiiciency in making and keeping records of transportation and delivery of shipments as identified upon receipts therefor.

Another purpose is to provide, in a system of this character, identification means in sequential and chronological order, which will render a maximum of accuracy not possible with other methods, lessen the amount of work for those engaged in such shipping service, and at the same time, to provide a multiple section shipping and transportation sheet, on which the various spaces for identification means, may be used to better advantage and permit collect on delivery shipments to be handled with a maximum of accuracy and a minimum liability of loss.

A combination device of this kind, provides for safety in case of a lost Way bill or a misdirected shipment, especially in the transportation of merchandise consigned to railroad terminals, marine shipping piers and other places of a similar nature conducted by the common carriers in the shipment of various forms of merchandise.

It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitive, and that While still keeping within the scope of the invention any desired modification of details and proportions may be made in the construction of the appliance according to needs and circumstances.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the shipment identification unit A comprises a base sheet 1, to which an auxiliary multiple section sheet 2, is attached at its upper end, to the base sheet, which is also of a multiple section type.

For example, the base sheet comprises the sections 3, 4, 5, and 6-, which are joined together as shown by the perforated lines of demarkation 7, 8, and 9, so that these various sections may be detached, for the reasons to be hereinafter understood from the following description.

The auxiliary multiple section sheet 2, comprises the sect- ions 10, 11, 12, and 13, which are likewise separable, owing to the perforated lines of demarkation 14, 15, and 16, while the line 14, is perforated so as to detach the section 11, from the section 10. The auxiliary sheet may be folded onthe perforated line 14, as well as on the line acting as a means of permitting one section to be detached from the other. However, the section 12, of the auxilia sheet is foldable on the dotted line 18, while the section 13, is foldable on the perforated line 16, when the unit is in its original whole state.

The section 4, of the base sheet contains a plurality of horizontal lines and certain vertical lines 19, and 20, dividing the section into various spaces, wherein various identification data or shipping indicia is printed, to facilitate the shipment of. merchandise from one place to another, and to ensure the article in transit, against loss.

The section 5, of the base sheet is also marked on its inner face with a plurality of horizontal and vertical lines 21, and 22, which are disposed to provide spaces for indicia pertaining to the shipping of various articles; certain of such indicia corresponding somewhat to those'on the inner face of the section 4.

The back of section 4, comprising the base sheet, has transverse lines 23, thereon, causing spaces to be formed for certain other indicia or shipping data to be hereinafter disclosed, while the back of the section 5, and the section 6, have marked squares 25, thereon, at which points tacks or other securing means not shown maybe inserted for attachin the unit A to an article proposed for shipment, without injury to the inner sheet.

The section 6, and the section 3, of the base sheet are provided with enlarged reinforced openings 26, and 27, through which suitable means not shown, such as cord or the like may be passed in registration with and through a similar opening 28, in the reception envelope 29, so that t e entire unit may be attached to an article which is not adapted for the application of an adhesive. It is to be noted however, that certain sections of the base sheet and auxiliary sheet, are retained by the different carrier offices, in the well known manner.

The inner face of the sections 10, and 11, have horizontal and vertical lines 30, 31 and 32 and 33, respectively, providing spaces on said sections adapted to also receive indicia corresponding to that on the front face of the sections 4 and 5.

The rear faces of the sections 12, and ,13, are also provided with lines 34, 35 and 36, and 37 respectively, and arranged as to provide spaces corresponding to those on the front face of sections 10, and 11, and the front face of sections 4, and 5, of the base sheet; it being understood that the back of the section 12, of the auxiliary sheet has a 7 space for certain terms and conditions of the carrier or transportation company.

Certain of the spaces on the back of the section 13, are adapted for the reception of the OIlglIliLl carrier office data, including that of the forwarding oflice and its way bill number, while the space below and to the left, provides for the entr of the destination of the shipment and the ate thereof, signature of the. employee issuing the receipt and the shippers signature and address. This being essential, should the shipment be of such a nature as to require communication between the destination oflice and the shipper, as isdesirable in a C. O. D. shipment, incorrect address or the like.

The back of. the section 13, to the right thereof, provides spaces for the entry of the amount of the C. O. D. charges to be collected, the. return charges, value claimed by the shipper, value rate, weight of the shipment, transportation charges, class of shipment, amount paid in part, advance chargesand total charges as well as the shippers receipt indicating the amounts of the same; the particular arrangement of the said spaces being such as to provide for greater efiiciency in the entering of charges and collections accurately.

As previously stated, section 13, is attached to section 11, which provides for a margin and perforated lines so that the section 10, can be detached from section 11; while section 12, is attached to section 11, to provide a margin and perforated line so that section 12, can also be detached from the said section 11. Section 12, being particularly adapted as a safety reference label to be filled in at the time of issuing the receipt, and which is required to be attached to the shipment.

Should the way bill become lost before ,delivery of the shipment, information necessary thereto, can be readily obtained from the said label, to provide data for a substitute way bill; or should the name and address on the way bill become obliterated before delivery of the shipment, reference could be had to the original office files, and would serve as an effective barrier against lost shipments.

Section 11, which is attached to section 10, provides a margin and perforated line 14, so

. that section 11, can be detached from section 10. Section 11, is an exact copy of the back of section 12, andis provided with spaces and numbers corresponding with the back of section 12. Through the medium of a carbon or transfer sheet, data entered in the spaces on the back ofsection 12, would obviously be transferred to the section 11, and serve as an oflice copy.

Section 10, is attached to the base sheet of the unit A, and as previously stated, is revided with a margin and perforated line so that section 10, can be detached from the section 3, of the base sheet. Section 10, is anexact copy of the front face of section 13, also provided with spaces and numbers corresponding to the front face of section 10. Any data entered on the front face of section 13, would be transferred to section 10, by the insertion of a suitable carbon or transfer sheet, not shown. Said section 10, being also intended as an ofiice copy to be retained by the carrier company.

Section 4, of the base sheet is a delivery section to remain attached to the shipment, and is an exact copy of the original receipt. The top portion of section 3 is provided with a perforated line 7, where the delivery sheet can be detached from the shipment and base sheet.

The reverse side of section 4, of the base sheet provides for the entry of the date and time of delivery of the shipment, while the spaces on the reverse or inner face of the sections 4 and 5, provide for the signature of the delivery-man, consignee, party signing for consignee, and for remarks.

Section 5, of the base sheet is attached to the section 4, by means of the perforated line 8, and the material from which this base sheet is made, may be relatively heavy, rendering the unit durable and capable of rough use while in transit, thereby insuring arrival of shipment at the point of destination.

Said section 5, of the base sheet, which is provided with the lined spaces herein mentioned, is an exact copy of those lined spaces on the reverse face of section 12, and the data to be entered on said reverse side, are transferred to the upper part of the front face of section 5, by means of a transfer or carbon sheet not shown.

The spaces on the reverse face of section 12, are provided for the reception of data comprising the name of original office, way bill number, the date of entry, issuance .of receipt, name of article, C. O. 1)., To be collected, rate charges, transportation charges, advance charges, total charges and delivery remarks on the part of the carrier company.

The eyelets or reinforcing openings 26, and 27, are adapted to receive a cord or similar securing means therethrough, which is also intended to be passed through the reception envelope eyelet 28, for securing the various parts together, to an article intended for shipment. As previously stated, sections 4, and 5, are intended to be folded upon themselves on the perforated line 8, and said sections are further adapted to be detached from the remaining portion of the unit, upon the delivery of the shipped article, by means of the perforated lines 7 and 9.

The reverse face of section 5, provides a blank surface for transportation rules and conditions, and will consist of such as the carrier company may elect. Further, should the carrier company desire to print theway bill number, and name of original, ofice, sufficient space for weight and other items may be provided, and such are intended to form a part of the present invention.

After section 12, has been detached from section 10, the remaining portion of the unit is presented to the employee whose duty is to check the shipment from the vehicle, at the carrier companys terminal, against the numbers on the way bill, the name of employee issuing the receipt signed for. The shipment being checked, sections 10, and 11, of the auxiliary sheet are detached from the section 3. Accordingly, the weight of the shipment is then entered in the proper space on section 4, and the base sheet then folded and attached to the article to be shipped; sections 10, and 11, being retained as the carrier companys ofice file copies.

The unit A may be tacked to an article for shipment, as at points 25, indicated thereon, or should the shipment be of such a nature as to prevent such tacking, the said unit is inserted in a reception envelope as shown in' Fig. 1, of the drawings. The stub of the unit at the top of the sections 3, and 6, are detached from the unit however, before inserting the same in said envelope and securing the same to a shipment by means of a suitable adhesive.

Should the shipment consist of a C. O. D. item, the invoices of merchandise or any papers or the like, may be placed between sections 4, and 5, before inserting the same in the envelope, or they may be suitably tied, tacked or pasted to the shipment. In this connection, it should be noted that the unit A should be inserted in the envelope with the reverse of sections 4, and 5, showing through the open side of the envelope, so that the space on said sections, may be used by the carrier company for designation purposes.

Having illustrated and described one practical embodiment of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:

1. A combination unit printed way bill comprising a relatively heavy enclosing portion, substantially rectangular in shape and having holes punched at opposite ends thereof, said enclosing portion being folded midway of its ends, thereby bringing its two halves in superposition and said holes in registration, a folded auxiliary strip located within and having one end secured to said folded enclosing portion and having an overall length when unfolded that is a. multiple, substantially, of the distance from the registering holes of said enclosing portion to the midway fold thereof.

2. A combination unit printed Way bill comprising a relatively heavy enclosing portion, substantially rectangular in shape and having holes punched at opposite ends thereof, said enclosing portion being foldedmidway of its ends, thereby bringing its two halves in superposition and said holes in registration, a folded auxiliary strip located within and, having one end secured to said folded enclosing portion and having an overall length when unfolded that is a multiple, substantially, of the distance from the registering holes of said enclosin portion to the midway fold thereof, said olded enclosing portion being provided withvre istering perforations in each half thereo and located nearer the registering holestherein than the fold thereof.
