This invention relates to separable fasteners of that kind in which series of complementary interlockin elements are arranged along the opposed e ges of a gap or opening in a garment, shoe, receptacle,or other article made of suchllexible material as textile fabricz leather,` or rubber and relates more particularly to sliders or such fasteners.
Y For certain purposes fasteners of the above type as ordinaril made are not wholly satisfactory, since wit the usual construction it is necessary permanently to close the gap or opening in the garment at one end. Thus when employed for closing the fronts of sweaters, coats, and the like, it is necessary for the wearer to draw the garment over his head when putting it on or taking it off, whereas the older forms of fastener, such as hooks, snaps, or buttons., are not open to this objection. h
I am aware that certain attempts have heretofore been made to remedy this deficiency in fasteners of the present t pe by making the slider in two parts capa le of separation so that the gap can be opened intermediate its ends, but so far as is known to me, all such previous expedients have been objectionable either from the standpoint of the cost of production of the fastener, from the cumbersome and unsi htly `appearance of the device, or from the diiculty of assembling and separating their parts.
In accordance with the present invention I have followed a similar course in that I divide my slider into two separable sections, but in so doing have avoided complexity o construction, or abnormal size or appearance, and in accordance with a preferred method herein disclosed I provide a' slider which may be formed from sheet material by simple stamping and bending operations; which is light in Weight; of relatively small dimensions; stiff and durable; which may be made at low cost whose parts are preferably united by a snap socket connection permitting them readily to be separated or assembled without moving them relatively in a longitudinal direction, and without manipulating latches or equivalent means, and by such separation tpermiting the ga to be opened at' an esired oint; an which works smoot y and freely in opening and closin the gap. Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a coat or sweater provided at the edges of its front opening with series 2 and 3 of fastener elements of any well known type. These fastener elements, for example, maybe of the kind disclosed in the patent to Prentice No. 1,658,392, February 17, 1928, wherein the several elements of each series are independent, or, on the other hand, the fastener-elements may be of the type shown in the patent to Prentice No. 1,677,408, dated July 17, 1928 wherein the elements of a series constitute the turns of a helical coil spring, yit bein understood that whatever ci c type of astener element be employed, t e guide elements of the slider hereinafter more fully described will be of appropriate sha to` accommodate the fastener elements. In Fig. 1 the front opening in the garment is shown as closed, the series 2 and 3 of fastener elements being interengaged and the actuating slider 5 being disposed at the top of the opening. The extreme bottom of the opening below the ends of the fastener elements is referabl provided with a fla 6 having a huttonho e for engagement wit a button 7. Obviously a hook and eye, sna or anyother equivalent means may be su stituted for the button and buttonhole. While this auxiliary fastener is not necessary, it is preferable to employ it or its equivalent in order that flexing of the garment at its lower part may not' result in separation of the series and 3 of interengaging fastener elements.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 3 to 7, the improved shder 5 comprises the lefthand section 11 and the right-hand section 12, it being understood that I refer to these parts as left-hand and right-hand sections merely for convenience in description and that I do not necessarily limit myself to this particular relative arrangement since the parts may be reversed in vplosition, if desired, without departing from t e spirit of the in. vention. The right-hand section includes a back'member 8 of resilient and preferably thin sheet material having forwardly turned flanges 9l and 10 (Fig. 8)` at its edges. The right-hand section 12, as shown more par-v ticularly in Figs. 5, 7 and 8, comprises a fastener guide having a rearwall 13, an inner wall 14z and a front wall 15, therear and front walls being provided with inwardly directed anges 16 and 17 (Fig. 8)7 defining between them a slot leading into the guide -channel 18. This guide channel is adapted to receive the right-hand series 3 of fastener elements and the walls of this channel may be shaped appropriately to receive the particular type of fastener element with which the slider is to'be employed.
In assembling the right-hand guide with the back member, it is disposed against the bent-up front face of the back member with its lian 16 engaging the flange 10. When thus s1- tioned, the inner wall 14 of the rightand geuide cooperates with the resilient back memr 8 and its flange 9 to form a resilient sna socket for the reception of the left-han guide elementas hereafter more fully described. The rear wall 13 of the right-hand guide referably is furnished with lugs 19 (Fig. which are bent over against the rear side of the back member 8, thus securing the guide permanently to the back member. Obviously, other fastening means may be used if desired. I

This blank, as shown, comprises parts 26, 27 and 29"which when bent along the dotted lines are adapted to form the side flanges and the tongue of the guide mem- .ber 11.

In Fig. 11 I have indicated a blank 12* appropriate for forming the right-hand guide member of section 12. This blank comprises parts 13, 14", 15, 16, 17 19, 20 and 21* which when bent along the dotted lines and at certain other obvious points are adapted respectively to constitute the parts 13, 14,' 15, 16, 17, 19 and 2O of the guide. This blank has the punched out slot S, and the incision B defining the lug M. Having provided the blank 12, its various parts, with the exception of the tabs 19, are bent to proper position, the pull device `22 being threaded over the tongue 20l before the latter is engaged with the tongue 21. The back member 8'L is then arranged against the outer Wall of the member 13* 'and the tabs 19'* are turned over to hold the back member in place.
The completed sections 11 and 12 are now mounted on the left-hand and right-hand series respectively of fastener elements and the stops 4 are secured in position. The sections 11 and 12 are moved down to the lower end of the series of fastener elements; the section 11 is engaged with the socket in the section 12; and the slide is ready for use. The
operation of the slide has already been de# scribed.
While I have herein disclosed one desirable embodiment of the invention and have described a desirable mode of making this embodiment, I wish it to be understood that the inyention'is not limited to the specific details of construction herein disclosed or to the specific mode of making the' device, but that `variations in shape, size and relative arrange! ment of parts, and thesubstitution of equivalents ma be'made, and vthat adiiferent order of steps 1n making the device may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: v
1. A' slider for separable fasteners of the class described, said slider comprising two independent sections each having a guide channel for one series of fasteners, one of said sections having elements constituting a snap socket for the reception of the other section.
2. A slider of the class described comprising two independent sections each provided ywith a guide channel for one series offastenerI elements, one of said sections having spaced elements extending substantially from top to bottom of the slider and between which the other section fits.
3. A slider of the class described comprising two independent sections each provided with a guide channel for one series of fastener elements, one of said sections being of substantially the full `Width of the slider and having a socket .for the reception of the other section.
4. A slider for separable fasteners of the class described comprising a air of independent separable sections, eac section havingfa port1on containing a channel for one series of fastener elements, one of said sections having a forwardly open socket into which the channel containing portion of the other section fits.
5. A slider for separable fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of independent separable sections, each section deining a channel for one series of fastener elements, one of said sections having a forwardly open socket for the reception of the other section, said socket having at least one resilient wall adapted frictionally to engage the other section when seated in the socket.-
6. A slider for separable fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of independent separable sections, each section having a portion containing a channel for one series of fastener elements, one of said sections having longitudinally extending spaced members defining an elongate socket for the recept-ion of the channel containing portion of the other section, said socket being so arranged as to permit engagement and separation of the sections without relative movement thereof in a longitudinal direction.

A slider for separa-ble fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of indendent separable sections, each section havlng a portlon containing a channel for one series of fastener members, one of said sections comprising constituting a snap` 1o Pe lng an elo socketin which the channel contaimng portion of the other section lits, said elements being arranged to rest force tending to separate sedions in a lateral direction but perm1 lyrelativel to the other to allow separation.
