STRANDING- MACHINE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF WIRE ROPES FROM TWIST Application filed December 9, 1926, Serial No. 153,679, and in Germany May 31, 1926.
In braiding 'or laying the wires to fbrm strands or ropes, the wires are bent into a. helical shape. This laying is however not able to do away with the resilience in the wire to such anextent that the helically bent wire will no longer spring back. In order to prevent or counteract this springing back it has already been proposed to pass the wires, before they are braided or laid, through a former, which imparts to them the helical line or pitch they are to occupy in the fin ished strand or in the rope. In this former the wires are bent in such a manner that they no longer have a tendency to spring back.
It has been proposed, among'other suggestions, to use a tapered drum as the former,
consisting of independently movable tapered sections on which grooved discs or rollers are mounted, over and under which the wires are passed, so that, when the drums revolve, they are bent into -a helical shape. This arrangement however, is complicated, inconvenient and costly and no means are provided for preventing the. helically bent wires from twisting about their own axes, when the drums revolve and of thereby preventing the occurrence'of internal strains in the wires.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is enlarged of the improved roller forming device, and
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view of, the device with prebendingmeans in connection 6. These arms are preferably inclined to-" wards the stranding point'according to the direction of the wiresd coming from the reels '0 so that the feeding of the wires can take place through the hollow shaft towards the preshaping Soint without any deflecting of the wire. 11 the supporting arms 6 side elevational detail These grooved discs or rollers 0 are mounted in such-a manner that the wires passing through between them are bent into a helical shape during the operation of the stranding machine. In order to be able to adjust the rollers according to the thickness of the wires used or the desired helical form or pitch, the rollers 0 may be so arranged on the supporting arms that they can be adjusted in their longitudinal direction or at. right angles thereto. Preferably the two outer rollers of each supporting arm are made adjustable in the longitudinal direction as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1 and only the middle roller is made adjustable at right angles to the said longi-- tudinal direction. Owing to the required pulling forces being small, the wires which are prebent by means of this device are not damaged or subjected to any preliminary stresses and they retain the helical form imparted to them corresponding to the pitch of the finished rope also on' the portion from the prebending point up to the stranding As soon as the wires leave the-rollers point. 0 they immediately drop, owing to their h lical form, into the shape of the rope is around i the rope core 9 of hemp orwire'. For efii'ecting the laying of the wires the laying frame a and with it the bobbins containing the wires are revolved about the axis of the rope or the core g. In braiding and laying machines in order to prevent a twisting of the preliminarily' bent wires about their own axes,
the bobbins in the laying-frame are given the usual reverse rotary motion, so that they always retain their initial position in space and the wires will not be twisted. Wire ropes made in this manner from wires which ihavebeen preliminarily bent so as to be free from strain are'completely free from the tendency to untwist, in otherwords, the laid wires have no tendency to turn in the reverse direction, do not spring out, and the finished rope will not warp and will not form kinks.-
Fig; 2 shows the arrangement of the roller prebending. device 'll in the stranding machine, the wire reels 0 of which through the intermediaryof a transmission gear w during the operation of the stranding machine receive a twist such that the reels always retain the vertical position shown, so that by this reverse rotary motion an axial twisting of the prebent wi'res is avoided during strand- 1, A device for the manufacture of wire ropes free from twistin in which the prebending of thewires is. e ected between rollers, comprising in combination with the roll-' m ers and with a strandin head having discs, supporting arms for t c said rollers and means for detachably and rigidly securing the said supporting arms onto the front disc ofthe stranding head, the said supporting arms I I having hollow shafts through which the wires can be fed to the rollers.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 in which the supporting arms are so inclined towards the stranding point that the center lines of m the supporting arms lie on the periphery of a cone, the axis. of which coincides with the strandin axis. y
' 3; A eirice as claimed in claim 1 having reels on the stranding head ca able of reverse a rotation for the purpose 0 preventing a twisting of the prebent wires.
4. A device for manufacturing'wire ropes free from a'tendency :to untwist as claimed in claim '1, and in which the rollersare' ar- 30 ranged so'as to be ca able of adjustment.
5. A device fort e manufacture of wire ropes free from a tendency to untwist as claimed in claim 1, and in which the outer rollers are adjustable 'in the longitudinal direction of the supporting'arms.
6. A device for manufacturing wire r0 s free from a tendency to untwist as claime in claim 1, and in which the central rollers are adjustable at right angles with respect to the T longitudinal direction of the supporting' arms. 1 In testimony whereof I have signed my nametothis specification.
