With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and'claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view partly broken away, illustrating one form of bobbin constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but partly in elevation, showing a slightly different form of construction.
Fig. 3 may be considered as an end elevation of either the construction shown in Fig. 1 or that illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 may be considered as an end elevation of the sleeve illustrated either in Fig. 1 or in Fig. 2.
In the drawings above briefly described,
the preferred details of construction have been illustrated and while these details will be herein specifically explained, it is to be understood that minor variations may be made.
On the drawing, the numeral 5 denotes a one-piece sheet metal tube having an external filling-receiving groove 6 around its periphery near one end, the tube being provided also with a peripheral abutment shown in the form of a rib 7 at the side of said groove toward said one end. The groove 6 may be either formed between the rib 7 and another external rib 8 as in Fig. 1, or a portion of the tube may be inwardly distorted as in Fig. 2, to provide such groove. In either instance, the groove serves to receive several wrappings of the filling for the bobbin and hence establishes means for anchoring said filling before winding upon the tube, also assisting in preventing slipping of the filling on the tube. To further prevent such slipping, the tube ma be provided with external means, grooves 9 eing shown.
A sheet metal sleeve 10 surrounds the tube 5 between the rib 7 and the aforesaid one end 1928. Serial No. 283,583.
of said tube, said sleeve being provided with external means such as the ribs 11 to engage conventional bobbin-holding means within a shuttle. Sleeve 10 is outwardly spaced from the tube 5 and'the ends of said sleeve are bent inwardly to provide inner and'outer flanges 1213 which snugly contact with the periphcry of the tube. The flange 12 abuts the rib 7, and the above-named one-end of thetube 5 is flared as at 14 or otherwise'bent outwardly against'the outer side of the flange 13. Thus, the sleeve 10 is tenaciouslysecured to the tube 5, being tightly confined between the rib 7 and the tube portion 14.
Preferably, two notches 15 are formed in the flange 13 to receive bobbin-driving means of a spindle. These notches extend entirely through the thickness of flange 13 and open through the inneredge thereof as seen in Fig. 4, and the outwardly turned end 14 of the tube 5 spans the open ends of said notches as seen in Fig. 3.
It will be observed from the foregoing and the drawing, that an exceptionally simple and inexpensive, yet an efficient, reliable and very desirable bobbin has been provided. As above stated, the details disclosed are preferred but within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
I claim i 1. A metal bobbin comprising a tube distorted near one end to provide a peripheral filling-receiving groove and a peripheral rib at the side of said groove toward said one end, a sleeve surrounding said tube between said rib and said one end and having external means to engage a bobbin-holder, said sleeve being spaced outwardly from the tube and having its ends turned inwardly to provide an inner and an outer flange both of which snugly contact with the periphery of the tube, said inner flange abutting said rib, said one end of said tube being turned outwardly against the outer side of said outer flange to securely anchor the sleeve to the tube.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1; said outer flange having an opening to receive a bobbin-driving member of a spindle.
3. A metal bobbin comprising a tube distorted near one end to provide a peripheral abutment, a sleeve surrounding said tube between said abutment and said one end and having external means to engage a bobbin holder, said sleeve being spaced outwardly 5 from said tube and having its ends turned inwardly to provide an inner and an outer continuous flange both of which snugly contact with the periphery of the tube, the outer side of said inner flange abutting said abutment, said one end of said tube being turned outwardly against the'outer side of said outer flaglge to securely anchorthe sleeve to the tu e.
4. A structure as specified in claim 3; said outer flange having an opening to receive a bobbin-driving member of a spindle. r 5. A metal bobbin comprising a tube distorted near one end to provide a peripheral filling-receiving groove and a peripheral rib at the side of said groove toward said one end, a metal sleeve surrounding said tube between said rib and said one end and having external means to engage a bobbin holder, said sleeve being spaced outwardly from the tube and being provided at its inner and outer ends with inwardly projecting continuous means abutting the tube between said rib and said one end of said tube, said inner continuous means being disposed against said rib, said one end of said tube being turned outwardly against the outer side of said outer continuous means. 7 t
