This invention relates to charging boxes for lntroducing raw or scrap material into an open hearth furnace.
Heretofore such boxes have been subject to 3 failure at their lifting end near the point where the charging bar employed for handling them is attached. This has been due to inability of the structure at the lifting end of the boxes to stand up under the very severe strains to which it is subjected. These boxes are comparatively long, and consequently the load 'of each is centered a considerable dist-ance from the point where the box is supported, that is, the rear of the box Where the charging bar is attached to it. Hence, there is a considerable strain on the charging-bar engaging structure, which has a tendency to, and frequently does, fracture the end of the box. j
The object of the invention isto provide a charging box having a bar-receiving end which will effectively resist the severe strains to which it is subjected.
The invention will now be described in conjunction with the accompanying dra-wings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a furnace charging box embodying the preferred form of my invention; Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal central section through the box; and Fig. 3 an end view of the box.
Referring to the drawings, the charging box is illustrated as .an integral steel casting having a bottom 1, side walls 2, a front end wall 3 and a rear or lifting end 4. The bot tom and side walls of the box are preferably of increased thickness from the front to the rear of the box, thus considerably strengthening it where needed. The side walls and the bottom are extended rearwardly past the rear end of the box, which is a vertical end wall 5, and all terminate in a slotted charging-bar-receiving end wall 6. Between side walls 2 and rear wall 5 in each of the upper rear corners lof the box there is provided a horizontally disposed bracelO, and in the bottom of the box between the floor 1 and the rear wall 5 there are provided a plurality of vertically disposed braces 20 which reenforce the rear portion of the box and prevent the forward portion from pulling PATENT OFFICE away from the rear wall 5 when'a heavy load is being carried in the box or when the box is being forced into the furnace.
Directly forward of wall 6, and forming with it a girder-like structure, there is provided a second slotted charging-bar-receiving end wall 7, which also forms the back wall of a pocket 8 arranged in the end of the box for receiving a charging bar, not shown. Sp'aced forwardly of wall 7 and rearwardly of wall 5, there is another cross wall 9 which forms the front wall of 'chargin -bar-receiving pocket 8, and with wall 5 orms a boxlike structure similar to the structure provided at the rear of pocket 8 by end walls 6 and 7. These two box-like structures further increase the strength and rigidity ofv the end of the lifting portion of the box to.

As illustrated, pocket-8 formed by cross walls 7 and 9 are shaped to receive a charging bar of a well known type, having a reversible wedge shaped head and a movable box engaging crosslug. Wall 9 of pocket 8 is inclined forwardly from the bottom upward to receive the inclined face of such u charging bar head, and walls 6 and 7 are pro vided with a vertical slot 19 for receiving the handle of the charging bar. Arranged crosswise of walls 6 and 7 about the center of slot 19 there are provided cross slots 21 which receive a movable lug provided on the charging bar to prevent it from becoming uncoupled trated and described what I now consider to represent its best embodiment. However, I desire to have it understood that, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically illustrated and described.
I claim as my invention:
1. An elongate furnace-charging box having side and end walls and a bottom, the rear of the box being provided beyond its end wall with a vertically disposed charging-bar-receiving pocket surrounded by vertically disposed double walls spaced from each other.-
2. An elongate furnace-charging box having side and end walls and a bottom, the rear of the box being providedl beyond its end Wall with a charging-bar-receiving pocket .surrounded by' vertically disposed double walls spaced from each other, and the side walls of the box being extended beyond its v rear end wall to form the outer walls of the sides of said pocket.
3. An elongate furnace-charging box having side and end walls and a bottom, the rear of the box being provided beyond its end Wall with a charging-bar-receiving pocket surrounded b vertically disposed double walls spaced om each other, and the side Walls and bottom of the box being extended beyond its rear end wall to form the outer walls of the sides and bottom of said pocket.
4. An elongate furnace charging box having side and end walls and a bottom, reinforcing horizontally disposed lbraces arranged between said side walls and'rear end wall at the upper corners of the box and between said rear end wall and said bottom, and the rear of the box being provided beyond its end with a vertically disposed chargmg-barreceiving ocket surrounded by vertically Adisposed ouble walls spaced from each other.
5. An elongate furnace charging box having side and end Walls and a bottom, said side walls and bottom being tapered from the front to the rear of the box, and the rear of the box being provided beyond its 'end wall with a vertically disposed charging-bar-receiving pocket surrounded by vertically disposed double walls spaced from each other, and joined at their top, bottom and sides by other walls with the top, bottom and sides of the box.
6. An elongate furnace charging box hav'- ing side and end walls and a bottom, said side Walls and bottom being tapered from the front to the rear of the box, horizontally disposed reinforcing braces arranged between said side walls and rear end wall at the rear upper corners of the box and vertically disposed braces arranged in spaced relation to one another between said rear end wall and said bottom, and the rear of the box being provided beyond its end wall with a chargingbar-receiving pocket surrounded by verticalllly disposed double walls spaced from each ot er.
7. 'An elongate furnace charging box having side and end walls and a bottom, the rear of the box being provided beyond its end Wall with a charging-bar-receivin ocket surrounded by vertically disposer? dbuble walls spaced from each other, the side walls and bottom of the box being extended beyond its rear end wall to form the outer walls of the sides and bottom of said pocket, and an up er wall extended rearwardly from the top ofp the box joining the u per ends of said vertically disposed pocketorming walls.
