Serial No. 244,871.
The present invention relates to an improved "cover for a baby carriage and a purpose of the invention is to provide an article of manufacture comprising a panel of netting 5 or mesh work corresponding to the top of the body of the carriage, including sides and end pieces fitting down over the body, with elastic means in the lower ed es of the end ieces for the purpose of shirrm the end pieces and drawing the cover close y around the body.
Some covers heretofore used are constructed of netting, and the majority of covers merely consist of netting bound on the edge and thrown over the carriage. The
netting gets worn and distorted, the shape bein' very irregular, which in time gives an unti y appearance. v
Another purpose is to provide a cover overcoming these disadvantages, and wherein the netting for the top is reinforced longitudinally and transversely so as to prevent distortion of the netting panel, and thereby rendering the cover more durable and serviceable, the reinforcements preventing the netting '25 from pulling or enlarging from one corner to another.
Such covers of panel netting which with sides and ends of another material, have no means of drawing the sides and ends about the body of the carriage, nor do the netting panels keep out the weather conditions, so therefore still another purpose is to provide a cover having means for shirring or drawing the sides and ends about the cover, in order to present a neat appearance and render the cover more durable. A further purpose is to provide a cover havin a cover flap (which when not in use is fol ed back toward the head of the body of the carriage), constructed and arranged, that in bad weather it may be unfolded and disposed over the netting panel and fastened at the foot of the body of the carriage adjacent the upper edge of one end of the cover preferably the end at the foot of the carriage, said cover flap being fastened by any means along the sides to prevent the weather passing under the cover and through the netting, an yet at the same time permitting a reasonable 50' amount of air to'reach the baby, to avoid making the baby unhealthy, due to too much covering.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein glven are in no way limitative, and that while still keeping within'the scope of the lnvention, any desired modification of details and prgportions may be-made in the construction 0 the appliance according to circumstances. v
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Flgure 1-is a view in perspective of a baby carriage showing the improved cover as applied.
Figure 2-is a view in front elevation also illustrating the cover applied.
Figure 3is a longitudinal sectional view through the cover on line 3-3 of Figure 1 showing the cover flap folded back and not in use.
Figure 4--is a similar sectional view to Figure 3 with cover in closed position.
Figure 5is a horizontal section .on line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6-is a sectional view through the. piping which tends to fasten parts of the cover together and at the same time give a neat appearance.
Referring to the drawings, 1 identifies a cover as a whole for a baby carriage, which comprises a netting panel 2 and side and end pieces 3 and 4, which is in the form of a single strip about the entire sides and ends of the body of the carriage, the upper edge of this strip being stitched at 5 to the sides and end edges of the netting panel, the stitched edges being reinforced by a piping 6 in the form of a tape, which not only fastens the sides and ends but also gives a finish to the cover, such as will render the cover durable and efficient in use. I
The lower edges of the ends have a fold receiving elastic members 8 suitably connected within the folds as at 9 so that the sides a (1 ends, and particularly the ends, may be shirred around the body of the carriage, thereby not only protecting. the walls of the sides of the body against wear, but also acting means as at 10 is a closure fla as means to retain the cover in position and hence give. a neat appearance. When the cover is-in use it is not possible .for the weather to reach the interior of the body of the carriage.
Secured by stitches or any other suitable 11, Asuitable pipin 12, which gives an a ded strengthening e ect and neat appearance to the cover, is secured around the marginal ed e of the netting'panel 2. Also carried by t e cover near the head thereof are straps 13, which may receive the closure. flap when folded back, as shown in the drawings.
The free ed es of the closure fla have a edges of the side pieces tight, to retain the cover fitting down over an ad'acent all sides of the body of the carriage, an means including fasteners .to cover and uncover the panel netting.
In testimony whereof he. aflixes his signature.
piping 14, to hide the raw edge of t e material and give a neat appearance. The piping on the free end edge and the side ed es of the closure flap are provided with emale members 15 to engage with male members 16, which male and female members constitute snap fasteners of a well known type to hold the closure flap in a closed position over the panel netting and to preclude excessive weather conditions, yet allowing a reasonable amount'of air to reach the interior of the body of the carriage to insure the baby from being unhealthy.
. The panel netting is provided with longitudinal and transverse reinforcing straps 17 p and 18, which are stitched to the netting as at 19. These reinforcing straps prevent the netpulled from the corners and the ting from getting out of shape, thiat is being s1 es.
In good weather and especially whenthe weather is warm the closure flap may be folded back and held by the straps, and in bad weather the closure flap may be unfolded and placed to cover the panel netting.
The sides and ends of the baby carriage cover, and also the closure flap 11 may be constructed of any suitable material, either plain fabric of any suitable design or configuration, or rubberized fabric of any suitable configuration. The strips 13 may be of rubberized fabric, as well as the intersection reinforcing strips 17 and 18. The panel netting may be also constructed of any suitable material and of any size mesh.
. I The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is: A cover for ababy carriage, comprising a panel netting provided with transverse and longitudinal intersecting cross strips for reinforcing the netting and preventing it from sagging 1n the middle, side and end pieces, a
piping uniting'the upper. edges of the side' and end pieces to the ngitudinal and end edges of the 'panel netting, whereby the side and end pieces depend from to fit down over the sides and ends of the carriage, the adjacent vertical and edges of the side and end pieces being connected, the lower edges of the two end pieces havingrmeans for shirring the end pieces and drawing the lower the panel netting a
