Description

July 15, 1930. J. w. BAGERT 1,770,385
COVER FOR QARBAGB CONTAINERS Fild Auk. 20, 1927 Patented July 15, 1930 JOHN .WILLIAM BAGERT, F NEV'ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
oovna roa GARBAGE -o'on'rnnvnns Application filed August 20,-=1S27. Serial No. 214,353.
This invention relates to a-cover for garbage wagons, the general object of the invention being to provide means for entirely enclosing the top of the wagon body so as to .5 prevent the escape of garbage and the odors thereof and also to prevent the entrance of flies, insects and the like into the body, while permitting entrance to the body for the dump ing of the garbage into the body.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an end view showing the cover attached to the body.
Figure 2 is a top plan view with parts broken away.
Figure 3 is a detail view of one of the handles.
As shown in these drawings, the cover comprises a pair of end frames 1 which are connect-ed together by a cross piece 2 connected to the centers of the end pieces at the top thereof, the end frames being covered by the sheet metal 3 and the hood which includes the stationary center strip 4, the strips 5 hinged to the strips 4, one at each end thereof and the curved pieces 6 which are each hinged to a strip 5. The end pieces are bolted to the upper edges of the ends of the body A by the bolts 7 and the free edges-of the pieces 6 project below the upper edges of the sides of the body where they are provided with the latches 8 engaging the angle strips 9 which are fastened to the sides of the body.
Each latch comprises a curved member 10 pivoted to a part of each piece 6 and a latching lever 11 which is pivoted intermediate its ends to the outer end of the member 10. Handles 12 are fastened to the end pieces adjacent the lower corners thereof and a plate 13 having a handle forming loop 14 at its upper end, is connected to the center of each end piece adjacent the upper end thereof. This handle 14; and the handle 12 facilitates the placing of the device on a body or its removal therefrom. Handles 15 are attached to the outer ends of the cover pieces 6 for facilitating raising and lowering of these pieces.
From the foregoing it will be seen that practically one-half of the wagon body can be exposed by opening one-half of the device so that garbage can be readily placed in the wagon body without interference on the part of the cover device and when the cover device is in closed position, the garbage is fully covered and odors therefrom cannot escape. This device also permits more garbage to be placed in the wagon, as the garbage can be heaped therein almost up to the top of the device, for after the garbage has been heaped in the center, the doors or strips 5 can be allowed to stay closed and only the doors 6 opened. After one side has been partly filled, the door 6 ofthis side can be latched and the garbage pushed from the opposite door into the closed half of the device so that this half can be filled close to the door thereof. Then the garbage is placed through the second door and piled on the garbage in the wagon until the second half of the device is filled almost to the door thereof. Thus with this device, more garbage can be placed in the wagon body than could be placed in a body without thedevice and at the same time, the device prevents the escape of odors and the device also prevents the entrance of flies and other insects.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
WVhat I claim is A cover for a garbage container comprising a pair of end frames, each having a flat centrally arranged top part and downwardly and outwardly curved end parts, a cross piece connecting the centers of the frames together,
sheet metal covering the end frames, means for attaching the lower edges of the frames to a container, a strip of sheet metal connected with the cross piece and extending from one end frame to the other, a strip of sheet metal hinged to each edge of the first strip, a curved cover piece hingedly connected with the outer edge of each hinged strip, said cover pieces engaging the curved ends of the end frames when in closed position and latches at the outer ends of the cover pieces for en- I gaging portions of the container to hold the cover pieces in closed position.
In testimony whereof I ai'fix my signature.
JOHN W. BAGERT.
