' HOSE' REEL Filed Aprii 1a, 8
INVENTOR ROBERT HA 1.1.
ATTORNEYS Tatenteol .lulyl, 1930 UNITE HOSE REEL Application filed April 18,
My invention relates to improvements in hose reels which are adapted for use with either round or collapsible hose. In hose reels of usual construction the turning on of the water to the hose before it is removed from the reel usually results in that portion of the hose which is being filled jamming the remaining ortion on the rack, so that it cannot be freely removed therefrom. It is with a view to overcoming these objec: tions and also to provide means whereby the initial water pressure will discharge. the
' hose from the reel that my reel is devised,
The invention consists essentially of a reel comprising a pair of opposed side members having a common centre drum, which side members are adapted for lateral adjustment to conform to varying widths of hose and means for releasably securing the centre of a length of hose to the drum, as will be more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a general view ofthe invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the reel taken on the line 22 of Figure 1. 1
Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the reel taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2., 1
In the drawings like characters of refer-' ence indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The numeral 1 indicates a post or wall upon which a bracket 2, having upper and lower apertured lugs 3, is secured; Swingingly connected to the lugs of the bracket 2 is a forked hanger 4 which carries between its outer end a fixed shaft 5.
The reel, generally indicated by the numeral 6, consists of a pair of, opposed circular side plates respectively indicated by the numerals 7 and 8. The side plate 7 is concentrically secured upon a sleeve 9 which is provided with a relatively long. thread 10 at its free end. The side plate 8 is internally threaded and is adjustably fitted upon-the thread 10 of the sleeve 9 and is secured in adjusted position by a locknut 11. The side plates 7 and 8 are fitted with annular rings or drums 12 from which a portion is cut away to define a gap 13. The drums vary in 192s. sear $10,271,002. I
size sothatone may telescope into the other as shown in Figures 2 and Spokes 14; extend radially from each of the side plates 7 and 8 and to the free end of these, rims 15 are secured which serve as a guide to the hose as it is being wound upon the reel. A cylindrical block 16 is hingedly mounted upon one of the side plates 7 and 8 which lies when in normal position transversely of the drums 12 and longitudinallyof the gap 13 therein, and is capable of being swung outwardly between a pair of spokes 14 into; the position" shown in dotted line in Figure 2.
The numeral 17 indicates a stand pipe having a water valvel8 from which a'hose .19 fitted with a nozzle extends. Itwill be obvious that the reel could be fitted to Wheeled or other frames for use in gardens,
lawns and the like. r
The reel is used in the following manner.
The hose 19 is preferably provided with some mark to indicate-the centre of its length andwhen about to place it upon the reel, it
is taken at this point and bent in the form T-v parallel volutes around the drums 12 until I all but the extremitiesremain. When using the hose for firepurposes, if the valve 18 is opened prior to the hose being run out the water pressure in expanding each alternate layer of hose, causes the reel to berota'ted and to deliver the filled portion of the hose in the same direction as the nozzle 20 is carried.' When the final wrapping of the hose is unwound, the block 16 swings uponits hinge and releases the loop that the hose may fall to the" floor andbe run out to its desired place] What I- claim as my inventionis:
A hose reel comprising a pair of side plates, a drum section extending inwardly from the central portion of one of said plates and telescoping a correspondingly arranged drum sectionextending inwardly from the central section of the other plate, a hollow Dated at Ocean Falls, 13. hi 22 day:
