Serial No. 197,114.
The present invention relates to what is known in the art as an improved needle threader, that is, a device constructed especially for facilitating the placing of a thread through the eye of-aneedle.
' The principal improvement is directed to the provision of a single body which is constructed with individual elements permitting the threading of a needle used in hand sewing or the threading of a machine needle while it is on the machine. Briefly, the lnvention comprisesa plate of sultable configuration havlng a separate threader at each end these being so located as to permit the proper ones to be brought into play according to the type of needle to be threaded.
The improved device is characterized by simplicity of construction, inexpensiveness and compactness and convenience, thus permitting. a single to have a double function. y
Other objects, advantages, and features of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description and the apex portion of which is provided'with a somewhat ovate depression 17 communicating with a pair of spaced guide flanges 1.8 I
drawings.
In the drawings z- Figure 1 is a view observing one side of especially the machine needle threading device. v
Figure 2 is an edge view looking from top to bottom in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged .cross sectional view taken approximately upon the plane of the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 41 is an end view of F igure l looking in the direction from right to left.
Figure 5 is also an end view looking in right.
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view taken approximately on the line 66 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a similar view, the section being approximately on the line 77 of F 1gure 1.
Figure 8 is a view showing how the device used for threading the machine needle while the needle is in place on the machine.
a In carrying out the invention, I employ permit them to be pressed a substantially rectangular plate of sheet metal 9 of'appropriate texture. It will preferably be slightly flexible yet suiliciently rigid to operate efliciently. At one end of the plate is a hand needle threading device 10 and at the opposite end is a machine needle threading device 11. By directing attention more particularly to Figure '1 and observing in detail the hand needle threa'der, it will be noted that thebottom portion of the plate here is provided with .a semi-circular depression 12' centrallyintersected by an outwardly pressed rib forming-a needle 7 receiving beneath an especially designed thread guide groove 13. This groove-terminates of the configurationshown better in Figure 3. In forming, this guide an extension is provided at this end of the platethe extento first provide sion being bent upon itself In addition a tubular slip handle 14.
a right angularly disposed wing 15 is provided and is disposedagainst one side of the plate'9 as shown in Figure 1. A portion of this wing is spaced away from the plate as represented better in Figure 3. p is bent to provide a conical [projection 16,
d1sposedon'opposite sides of the aforesaid needle receiving groove 13. The depression The metal formed opposite the guide flanges 18 with a thread passage hole 19 (see Fig 6).
Attention is invited to Figure 3 wherein it will be noted that the guide flanges 18 are flared outwardly away from each other to against substantially diametrically opposite sides of the needle;
Considering now the machine needle threadingmeans at the opposite end of the plate, it will-be noted first that this is disposed on the reverse edge of the plate. In
other words the hand needle threading de-.
vice is disposed on one longitudinal edge while the machine needle threading device is disposed on the opposite, longitudinaledge at the opposite end of the plate. The plate vemently held.
ovate entrance of the needle provided with the is provided with an extension which is bent upon itself firstat right angles as at 20 (see Figs. 5 and 7) then upwardly into parallelism with the body portion of the plate. The same bent portion has a peculiar curve as represented at 21 and the edge portions are formulated into an open ended and inwardly tapered guide 22. Here again, the guide is somewhat of ovate configuration as better shown in Figure 8 and it is adapted to'aline' with a thread hole (see Fig. 7 above and below which are inwardly pressed teats 2 1. Incidentally, the bent portion 21 is provided with an .opening through and beyond which the pointed extremity of the needle is allowed to protrude as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 7. p
In using the device it is understood that the cylindrical part 1& is employed as a handle by means of which it can be con- Assuming that it is desired to use the device 10 for threading the ordinary hand needle, it is obvious that the needle is placed in the groove 13. The end eye is forced up between the guide flanges 18 (see Fig. 3) underneath of the conicalfeeding guide 16. The portion 16 as well as the part embodies sufficientvelasticity to permit the flanges 18 to be pressed down on opposite sides of the needle to hold it firmly in place clear understanding of the construction and method of use of the invention will be had, therefore a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
Minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim: a
In a needle threader of the class described a plate provided at one end with an extension bent at right angles thereto, and then inwardly and upwardly to provide a projection, the free end of said projection terminating in spaced parallelism with the body of the plate, provided with a needle hole, the outwardly bent portion being formulated into an inwardly tapered thread receiving and guiding mouth, and said plate being formed with a thread receiving opening cooperating with said mouth and having inwardly directed protuberances formed on the under face thereof adjacent said opening.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
EMIL AHOLA.
whereupon it can be readily manipulated to aline the eye in the needle with the opening 19 (see Fig. 6). Thus holding the needle, the end of the thread is placed into the or mouth 17 whereupon it is readily guided toward and through the eye of the needle. In fact, the thread passes on through the hole 19 where it is grasped and pulled through sufiiciently to allow 7 the threaded needle to be separated without ac-.
cidentally pulling-the thread out.
The machine needle threader is used in substantially the same manner, the needle being lifted up by the machine mechanism in an obvious manner to permit the lower pointed end to be inserted into the guide and feeder as represented in dotted lines in Figure 7. The pointed end here is allowed to protrude through and beyond the hole in the bent portion 20 and the body of the needle is held between the retaining flanges of the side walls of the mouth 22. The teats 24c bear against one side of the. needle, and thus cooperate with the sides of the bent portion 20 whereby the needle is .held, as before intimated, between the retaining flanges of the side walls of the mouth 22 in a manner to prevent accidental displacement thereof. It is of course, necessary to manipulate the needle slightly in order to register the eye in the needle in the complemental hole 23.
It is believed that by considering the description in connection with the drawings a said bent portion being
