BALANCED COVER SUPPORT Filed April 25, 192' Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BALANCED COVER SUPPORT Application filed April 23,
This invention relates to a balanced cover for a phonograph cabinet and concerns itself with adjustable means for yieldingly holding the cover in any predetermined position; the means being adjustable through a suitable aperture in the rear wall of the cabinet.
An object of this invention is to provide means for balancing a hinged lid or cover.
Another object is to provide for readily adjusting such means from without the cabinet to which the lid is hinged.
Another object is to provide a lid support which is simple in construction, efficient in service and economical to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a balanced cover support which may be readily applied.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a phonograph cabinet showing the cover in partly open position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view illustrating the cover supporting means on one side of the cabinet.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken upon the line III-III of Figure 2.
As shown on the drawings:
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates a phonograph cabinet having a cover 2 which is hinged to the rear end 3. The cover is maintained in open position by means of a pair of links 4 pivoted thereto. The lower end of each link 4: is pivoted to a lever 5 which is pivoted at 6 to a bracket 7 suspended from the motorboard 8. To this end the bracket 7 extends through a suitable slot 9 in the motor-board and is provided with a flange 10 that closes the slot 9 and overlaps the ends thereof as indicated at 11 which ends may be fastened 1927. Serial No. 185,940.
by screws or the like to the motor-board. It will be noted that the flange is provided with a suitable slot 12 for receiving the link 4:. l
A coil spring 13 is connected at one of its ends to an intermediate point of the lever 5. The upper end of this spring is connected to an adjustable anchoring device 14 which is in the form of a lever pivoted to the bracket 7 at 15. The lever 14 is provided with a depending arm 14 which extends below the pivot point 15. This arm 14 is provided with an ear 16 at its lower end and adjacent the ear 16, the bracket 7 is provided with an car 18. A screw 19 is threaded in the ear 16 and the head of this screw extends through a suitable aperture in the ear 18; the head of the screw being provided with a suitable collar 19 which abuts the inner side of the car 18. It will be appreciated that the tension of the spring 13 will tend to swing the lever 141 in a clockwise direction. This movement of the lever, however, is resisted by the abutment of the collar 19 against the ear 18. The rear wall of the cabinet is provided with an aperture 20 through which a tool may be inserted for adjusting the screw 19 for varying the inclination of the lever 14 and thereby ad justing the tension of the spring 13.
It might be mentioned that the effective force of the spring 13 is varied in accordance with the position of the cover. WVhen the cover is in closed position, the spring 13 will be distended. However, the parts at this time will be in such position that there will be insuflicient effort in the spring to open the cover. As the cover is opened the spring will automatically raise the lever 5. upwardly from its dotted line position and the spring will be gradually compressed and the relation of parts will be such that the spring will maintain the cover in its open position.
We are aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and we, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
