- J. M LEAN .GALLERY FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS Filed March 22, 1929 Patented June '24, 1930 JAMES MCLEAN, F GLASGOW, SCOTLAND GALLERY FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS;
Application filed March 22, 1929, Serial No. 349,047, and. in Great Britain October 31, 1928.
This invention relates to galleries for electric lamps of the type including a shell having a central aperture. for accommodation of the lamp socket and spring-urged arms for engagement with the ornamental bowl, shade or the likefcarried by. the gallery (hereinafter referred to for convenience of description as a bowl).
In practice, it is found that galleries of this type are open to the disadvantage that they are unsuitable for use in relatively small sizes due to the difficulty of inserting the usual screw-threaded ring which isengageable with the screw-threaded neck of the lamp socket and which is usually employed to support the gallery.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a plan view of the gallery and Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. The gallery shown comprises a shell 1 hav ing a central aperture 13 for accommodation of a lamp socket 8 and provided with bowlsupporting arms 4 engageable with the interior of a bowl 5. Each arm 4: is secured to an expansile ring 7 fioatingly mounted in the shell, being supported by radially disposed pins 8, 9 and 10 loosely fitting in perforations 11 in the circumferential wall of the shell. The pins 8 and 9 may be pressed by the finger and the thumb to compress the ring 7 so as to permit entry of the arms into the bowl 5, the pin 10 serving ,solely as a which are directed inwardly so as to engage I in combination, a shell having'perforations in its lateral wall and formed with a central aperture for accommodation of an externally screw-threaded lamp socket and formed around its periphery with tongues which are directed downwardly and inwardly so asto engage the screw-threads of such lamp socket, so that, when the lamp socket is pressed into the gallery, the tongues are caused lightly to engage said screw-threads and then forcibly to engage said screw-threads as the weight of an ornamental'bowl is applied to said shell, and an expansile open ring provided with radial fins loosely accommodated in said perforations and with arms engageable with the interior of such bowl. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.

support for the ring and sliding in the rela- 'tive perforation 11. On release of the pins 5 8 and 9 the. arms 4 are urged into engagement with the bowl 5 by the expansile ring 7. The shell is formed with tongues6 which are directed downwardly and inwardly so as to engage the screw-threads12 of the lamp 4o socket 3. hen the lamp socket is pressed into the gallery, the tongues 6 are caused lightly to engage the threads and then forci bly to engage the threads as the weightof the bowl 5 is applied to the gallery. I claim: l
in combination, a shell having a central aperture intended for accommodation of an externally screw-threaded lamp socket and formed around its periphery with tongues 1. A gallery for electric lamps comprising
