This invention lrelates to improvements `in boilers and has special reference to improved draft door operating and controlling apparatus for boilers. .l
g The boilers to which this invention especially applies are of the kind disclosed and claimed in my cci-pending application, filed March 5, 1929, Serial No. 344,358. `These boilers are'provided with a transversely ex vl@ tendine` refractor chamber in the upper part ofthe fire box,and air is ladmitted through openings in each side of the boiler into the ends of this chamber. vlDoorsare provided, one at each side of the boiler for controlling the admission of air through these openings, and this present invention has to do especially with means forv controlling these doors.
It is desirable that these doors be opened and closed simultaneously and from a single point. To accomplish this, I provide a` single control handle located at one side .ofv the boiler ina convenient place, connecting this handle with both of the doors, and for this .25 purpose I provide a pipe extending transversely through the body ofthe boiler and sealed intothe side walls thereof. In the embodiment of my invention which I have chosen to illustrate it, I connect the control handle with the two doors by means of a divided chain, one part of which Vextends `through the boiler by means of the sealed-in pipe referred to. 1 y
V'I'he invention will be more readily Vunderstood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which y Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a boiler equipped with adraft door operating mechanism lo embodying the invention in one form;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the operating handle and related parts; A Fig. a is a detail vertical section line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; and l Y' F Fig. 6 is a section similar to Fig. 5 on the "B9 line 6 6 of Fig. 2.
on the i In said drawings, 1 illustrates a horizontal ktubular boiler having an upper cylindrical part 2 for containing the boiler flues 3 and a lower. rectangular part containing the fire box 4l. The boiler is made up of an outer Uv-shaped K shellV 5 and an: inner U-shaped shell 6. The
cylindrical part 2 of the 'boiler is denedv by the upper parts of the inner and outer shells, the upper part of the inner shellforming a crown sheet 7 for the fire box 4:.
In the upper part of the fire box,about midrear-aa.,
yway Lbetween itsends, is provided a transversely extending hollow balile wall 8y made up of refractory side parts 9 and a refractory f lbottom part 10. This Wallis supported oni transversely extending water tubes 12. The
refractory chamber 13 formed by the hollow wall 8 extends across the ire box from side to side. Thevdepending partsof--the inner and `outer shells are spaced-'apart to form side water legs 14,and opposite the ends of the chamber 18, openings 15 are'provided, extend-y ing through the side water legs for the purpose of admitting air into the, chamber 13 at its ends. The wall 8 is provided with openings 16 in its forward side for the admission of hot gases from the forward end of the fire box for admixture withv the air entering through the end openings ltand with lopenings lrin itsvbottom for the emission of the mixedair and gases into the ire box.
The airadmission openings 15 are formed by welding header rings 18 betweenthe inner and outer shells, and these openingsare controlled by doors y1'9and 20, one ateach side of the boiler. The doors19`and 2O are just alike;
they are hingedlymounted at their upper ends l"to swing 'upwardly and outwardly. The
' doors 19 and 2O are mounted hon suitable box-v vlike members 21 and-22, respectively, which.v
19` and 2O close by gravity, and meansare provided forswingingthe doorsgup foropen- 'ing'them- 'x In order to avoidunsightly chains, levers, or other apparatus extending above the'boiler, I provide a transverselyextending pipe 23 ex extend the openings 15 outwardly. The doors tending across the fcylindrical part of the l boiler above the doors 19 and`20 and through "which a door operatorVv can extend to 5facilitate the simultaneous operation of the doors from a single point of control. The pipe 28 is sealed into the side walls of the boiler.
I arrange a draft door operating handle 24 at the front of the boiler at one side, adapted to be connected to the doors 19 and 20 by a chain 25.
Above the door 20, which is on the same Aside Vof the boiler as the operating handle 24, lthe end of the Vpipe 23 is' provided'with a three-way'elbow26 having one nozzle 27 extending horizontally and screwed into the pipe 23, another nozzle 28 extendingdown ftoward the door 20, and a-third nozzle 29 extending toward the front end of the boiler. Above the opposite door 19, the end of the pipe 23 is provided with an elbow 30 pointed down toward the door 19.
The chain 25, which is connected to the handle, is divided between the handle and the elbow 26 into two branches 31 and 32, one of which leads to the door 20 and the other to the door 19 through the elbows and pipe 23.
4For cooperation with the handle 25 to retain the doors in adjusted positions, I provide a plate 33 fixed tothe side ofthe boiler. The plate 33 is provided with a guide hole 34 near its upper end for the chain 25 and with 'several pairs otprojections 35 adapted to be engaged by the handle 24 for retaining the doors in adjusted positions in an obvious manner.
As many modifications of the invention 'will readily suggest themselves to one skilled in the art, I do not limit or confine the inventionto the specific details of construction and specific combinations of devices and parts herein shown and described.
I claim:
l. A boiler provided with van air inlet opening at each side, a hollow stay extending through the boiler above said openings, doors for controlling said openings, a door operating handle arranged near the front of the boiler at'one side, a door operator extending from the handle to each of said doors, the
4partot the operator connected with the door on the 4opposite side ot the boiler passing through-said hollow stay, and means for -re- .taining the handle in dilierent adjusted positions.
2. A boiler provided. with van air inlet opening at each side, a hollow stay'extending through the boiler above said openings, doors ,for controlling said openings, a control plate secured to one side of the boiler near its front,

3; Aboiler provided with an air inlet openoperation with said plate, means on thel plate for permitting a plurality of engagements of the handle with the plate, a chain leading from the handle throughsaid threeway elbow to the door below saine, a branch chain connected with the first chain between the plate and the elbow and leading through the elbow and through said hollow stay to the opposite door, as and for the purpose described.
l. A boiler having a combustion chamber and provided with anjopening at each side for admitting auxiliary air to the combustionchainber, doors controlling said openings, a protective conduit extending transversely through the boiler abovefsaid doors, a single door control device, a door operating means connecting said device with both the doors and passing through said conduit.
5. A boiler having a combustion chamber and provided with an opening at each side for admitting auxiliary air tothe combustion chamber, doors controlling said openings, a protective conduit extending transversely though the boiler above'said doors, a single door control device arranged at one side of the front of the boiler, a door operating means connecting 'said device with both the doors and passing through said conduit.
G. A boiler. provided with an air inlet opening at each side,a hollow stay extending through the boiler above said openings, doors tor controlling said openings, adoorfoperator extending from a single point of control to each oi said doors, the part of the operator connected with one of said doors passing through saidv stay, and an operator adjuster at lsaid single point of control :tor opening and closing both said doors simultaneously.
In witness that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I affix my signature this 11th day of April, 1929.
ARTHUR K. BAKER.
