IMPROVEMENT IN EXTlNGUISHER-S FOR LAMP-CHIMNEVSQ',

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,669,.dated April 25, 1876; application filed November 20, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN GEORGE MI'iL- LER, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new and useful Extinguishing Attachment for Lamp-0himneys, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in. constructing a lamp-chimney with a hinged cap, adapted, when closed, to stop the passage of air, and

thereby instantly extinguish the lamp, as here-- lic cap E, which ishinged tothe said collar at e, and adapted to fit closely down upon the same, so as to prevent the passage of air. To the free edge of the cap E is applied a springcatch, F, adapted to enga e over the bead of the collar D, as shown, so as to hold the cap in its closed position.

So long as the cap E remains open, as shown in Fig. 2, and in full lines in Fig. l, the chimney G will operate in the usual manner, causing an active flow of air to support the flame. When the cap is closed, as shown in Fig. 3, and in dotted lines in Fig. '1,the passage of air is arrested, and that within the chimney being consumed by the flame, the latter is instantly extinguished. y i

The invention is' applicable to various forms of lamp-chimneys in common use. The device is Valuable, also, in preventing effluvium from an extinguished lamp.
