This invention appertains to heating appliances and is an improvement on our prior Patent 1,628,487, granted tous April 5, `1927.
One of the primary objects of our invention is to provide a'novel gas heater primarily intended for the use of heating houses and the like, and which is adapted to be suspended beneath the floor of a room or hall of the house to be heated and which embodies l0 novel means for carrying olf all fumes generated by the burner eXteriorly of the house and thereby eliminate all danger incident to the use of gas heating appliances.
Another important object of our invention is the provision of novel means for leading fresh air to the burner from the exterior of the house and novel means for carrying the fumes from the burner out of the house, with novel means for permitting the air to be heated for circulating about the burner' and its associate parts up into the house or room to be heated, the air being heated being entirely independent of the air utilized for supporting combustion in the burner.
A further object of our invention is the provision of a novel conical air heating baliie arranged on the burner, the conical baiile including a plurality of hollow radial fins through which the fiance and products of 3o combustion flow, the air to be heated for the house circulating around the radial fins and thence into the house.
A further object of our invention is the provision of an annular fume drum receiving the products of combustion from the conical baii'le, the drum having a pipe communicating therewith for leading the products of com-V bustion exteriorly of the house, the drum also forming means for heating the air cir- 40 culating about the same.
A further object of our invention is the provision of a humidifying cup carried by and sealing the lower end of the conical baffle with means for maintaining a constant supply of liquid in the cup, whereby t-he heated air will be humidified prior to the delivery thereof into the house, the cup having a ground connection with the conical baille to prevent the entrance of fumes from the burner into the air being heated.
A further object of our invention is the provision of novel means for controlling the air to the burner, a certain portion of the air being delivered above the burner and a certain portion to a gas mixing chamber coin- 155 municating with the burner, and a Valve plate for controlling the flow of air into the mixing chamber.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates our improved heating appliance which includes a casing 15 formed of sheet metal or the like, which receives the burner proper 25, the conical baffle 45 and the fume and heating drum 55.
The asing 15 includes side and end walls 16 and 17 and a bottom wall 18. The side and end walls can be provided with an outturned lateral attaching flange 19 for con nection with the floor 2OA of a building B, which is to be heated. These side and end walls can also be provided with an inwardly extending flange 21 for supporting a licor register, which can be raised when it is desired or necessary to light the burner.
Extending into the lower end of the casing 15 through one end wall 17 thereof is an air pipe or chamber 22 having its inner end closed and its outer end open for connection with a head23 which receives the air and gas mixing pipe 24 disposed above the air pipe or chamber 22 and which air and gas mixing pipe 24 communicates with the burner proper 25, which will now be described.
The burner 25 comprises an annular flared body including the inner and outer spaced walls 2G and 27 and a top wall 28 having a plurality of burner outlet openings 29 therein. The upper edge of the outer wall 27 ex tends above the top wall 28 to provide a flange 30 which forms a seat for the conical baflie 45, which will be later described. The lower edges of the inner and outer walls 26 and 27 are provided with annular ribs 3l which are fitted in annular grooves 32 formed in the top face of the plate 33 which is fitted on top of the air pipe or chamber 22 and around an air outlet opening 34 therein. Thus the plate 33 forms a bottom wall for the burner and the burner assembly is secured by means of bolts 35 to the air chamber 22, which bolts extend through suitable radially extending lugs v3G formed on the outer wall 27 of the burner.
Thus it is to be noted that the inner wall 2G of the burner fiares outwardly from the opening 34 and constitutes a central air passageway for conducting air above the burner openings 29.
The air mixing pipe 24 leads into the burner through one side thereof as at 37 so that the air and gas will tend to fiow around the burner and thus be evenly distributed to the burner openings 29. The forward end of the mixing pipe 24 is flared as at 88 toward its outer end and is likewise extended into the head 23 and the entrance of air into the mixing pipe 24 is controlled by a slide valve plate 39 which is provided with a guide rod 40 extending' through the upper and lower walls of the head The lower end of the rod is provided with a weight 41 for knormally maintaining the valve plate 39 in a closed position and a suitable chain 42 is connected to the upper end of the rod and extended to the desired point and operated in any preferred way for opening said valve. A fresh air conduit pipe 43 receives the head 23 and this pipe is extended to the exterior of the building for drawing fresh air into the device. A gas feed pipe 44 is led into the mixing pipe 24 adjacent to the forward end thereof so as to feed gas in the air stream and either natural or artificial gas can be employed. From the construction so far, it can be seen that a free flow of air is permitted into the air chamber 22 and thence into the central portion of the burner and that air under control is admitted into the mixing pipe or chamber 24 and combines with the air and enters into the burner itself.
As stated, the flange 3() forms a seat for the conical baflie 45 which forms an importtant feature of our invention and which will now be described.
Uur improved conical baffle 45 includes a plurality. of equi-distantly spaced radially extending hollow fins 46 which converge toward the lower ends thereof and the lower ends of the fins areconnected by an annular plate or wall 47 having openings 47 therein communicating with the hollow fins. The

The lower end of the ring' 48 is provided with an inwardly extending annular ground seat 5() Whichalso has connection with the` drum as will be later described. rlhis ring 48 is provided with a plurality of outlet openings 5] which Communicate with the interior of the conical baille between the threaded 'portion 49 of the ring` and the seat 50, as can be readily secn by referringto Figure 6 of the drawings. The lower tace of the annular plate 47 at its pe* riphery is rabbeted as at 52 for receiving the flange and'tor forming an intimate contact therewith and the inner face of the plate is likewise proifided with a` ground seat 53 for a` purpose which will also be later described. The spaces between tue hollow fins 46 form air circulating slots 54, for a purpose which will be later brought out.`

Communicatingwith one side ot the rim 56 oit the fume chamber or drum 55, is the fume outlet pipe 65 which likewise leads to the exterior of the house or building. We

ln conjunction with the burner we utilize a humidifying; device which embodies a humidifying` cup 69 which is fitted within the gro-und seat 53. of the conical baille 45 and closes the lower endthereot. We arrange a pilot burner 72 directly above one of the burner openings and a suitable rabove each burner opening 29. p Air is also admitted inte the mixing chamber 24 which mixes with the pgas from the pipe 44 and this mixture flows intothe burner and outfo the burner openings29 where the saine is ignited. The products of combustion flow up through the hollow iins int-o the hub 57 of the fume chamber, through the hollow arms 58 thereof into the hollow rim 56 and thence out into conduit pipe 65 to the atmosphere. The-air to be heated circulates around the line `and around the drum andup through into theihouse to be heated, and
with the fins and also prevents l'iecoining overheated.
By this arrangement*there is nopossible chance ot any of the mnes'or products of combustion 'from the gas burnerentering into the air being heated for thehouse and the direct tlowoffair conveying the products of. combustion out of the burner at all times, leading Vto the exterior of the lio-use.

Vile can also employ depending baille plate or pipe to partially surround the conical baille l5, so to protect the walls oit' the casing from undue heat and to lead the air to be heated under and around the conical baille l5 and thence around the luine chamber 55 to the room to be heated.

Changes in details may be made without departing` from the spirit or the sco-pe of this invention.
vWhat we claim asiiew is:
l. A heating appliance comprising an air chamber ha -ing an air outlet opening, a gas burner orp hollow annular construction having a plurality ol burner outlets and fitted over the air opening, an air and gas mixing pipe communicatingl with the hollow burner, a head receiving the air chamber and the air and gas mixing pipe, a fresh air conduit pipe connected to the head and leading from the outside ot the building to be heated, means tor controlling the low of air into the air and gas mixing pipe, an air heating baille arranged to receive the air from the air chamberand the products ot combustion from the burner, and means for receiving the products oic combustion from the baille and for leading the saine exteriorly ot the building.
2. A heating appliance cominising an air chamber having an air outlet opening, a hollow annular `gas burner surrounding the opening, an air and gas mixing pipe communicating with the hollow burner, the burner being provided with a plurality of burner outlet openings, a gas supply pipe communicating with the mixing pipe, a fresh air pipe having communication with the air chamber and the air and gas mixing pipe and leading from the exterior of the building to bejheated, means for controlling the entrance of air into the air and gas mixing pipe, an air heating 'baille arranged over the buriier for receiving the products of combustion therefrom, a fume chamber arranged on the air heating baille for receiving the products of combustion, a fume conduit pipe .leading from the fume chamber to the exterior of a building to be heated, and a normally open damper in said fume pipe.
3. A heating appliance comprising an air chamber having an air outlet opening, a hollow annular 4gas burner surrounding said opening and haifing a plurality of burner outlets, an air and gas mixing pipe communicating with the burner and arranged substantially tangential thereto, a gas 'supply pipe communicating with the air and gas mixing pipe, a lresh air conduit pipe leading from the exterior of a building to be heated and having communication with the air chamber Y ring, a gas supply pipe and the air and gas mixing pipe, a valve for controlling the flow of air into the air and gas mining pipe, a conical air heating baille including a plurality ol hollow radially extendiner ins arranged over the burner for receiving the products of combustion therefrom, a lin being disposed above each burner opening, a humidilyiiig cup received in the conical air heating barile and sealing the lower end thereof for leading the products of combustion into the hollow iins, a lume chamber lit-ted over the conical bal-lle and having an annular inner wall engaging the inner poition of the baille and having the interior thereof communicating with the hollow tins for receiving the products ot combustion therefrom, and a lume conduit pipe coininunicating with the l'unie chamber and leading to the outside ot the building to be heated.
4. A heating appliance comprising an air chamber having an air opening therein, an annular hollow gas burner ring surrounding said opening and provided with a plurality ol' gas burner outlets, an air and gas mixing pipe communicating with the hollow burner ring, a gas supply pipe leading into said air and gas mixing pipe, a fresh air conduit pipe communicating with the air chamber and air and gas mixing pipe, means lor controlling tlie ilow of air into said air and gas mixing pipe, a pilot burner for the gas burner, the gas burner being provided with an annular flange seat at its upper edge, a conical baille member including a plurality of downwardly converging hollow lins and a bottom plate provided with openings communicating wi'h the tins,a hollow lin being arranged above each burner opening, the ring being rabbeted at its periphery to fit upon-said flange seat, the inner Jface of the plate beingl provided with a ground seat, an annular vertically disposed ring connecting the upper ends of the fins and having openings therein communicating with the u pei ends of said hollow fins, a fume cham er including an annular hollow rim, a hollow central hub portion and radially extending hollow spokes connecting the rim and the hollow hub together, the hub including an inner depend-I ing wall connected with the lower portion ol the ring of the baille and an outer wall connected with the upper end of the ring of the baille, a huinidifying cup fitted on the seat of the plate, means for supplying liquid at a constant level tothe cup, and a Jfume conduit pipe communicating with the hollow ring ot the fume chamber and extended to the exterior ot a building.
5. A heating appliance comprising an air chamber having an air opening therein, an annular hollow gas burner ring surrounding said opening and provided with a plurality of burner outlets, an air and gas mixing pipe communicating with the hollow burner leading into said air 'bottom plate provided and gas mixing pipe, a :fresh air conduit pipe communicating with the air chamber and air und gas mixing pipe, means for contrfflling the llow oi air into said air and gas mixing pipe, a pilot burner for the gas burner, the gus burner being provided with an annular ilange seat at its upper edge, a conical barile member including a plurality of downwardly eonvergingr hollow and a bottom plate provided with openings communicating with the fins, a hollow iin being arranged above each burner opening, the ring being rabbeted at its periphery to fit upon said ilange seat, the inner face oi the plate being provided with a ground seat, an annular vertically disposed ring connecting the upper ends oi the iins and ha 'ing `openings therein communiating with the upper ends oi' said hollow iins, a fume chmnber including an annulaihollow ri in. a hollow central hub portion and radially extending hollow spokes connecting the rim and the hollow hub together, the hub including en inner depending wall connected with the lower portion of the ring` oi the baille and an outer wall connected with the upper end oi the ring oi the baille, a humidiiying cup iitted on the seat oi the plate, means Jr'or supplying liquid at a constant level to the cup, and a iume conduit pipe communicating' with the hollow ring oi the fume chamber and extended to the exterior ci a building. said i'ume conduit pipe being extende-zl through the i'resh air inlet pipe and provieiled with a control dining-er.
