rlhis invention relates to feeding devices of the ratchet type, and as herein shown has been especially designed and adapted for usefwith mortising tools7 but it is by no means limited thereto since it may be put to many other uses.
The object of the invention is to provide a udesirable and convenient feeding mecha'- nism easy of operation and comparatively simple in design, and at the same time to provide for easily placing the parts of t-he device in neutral relation with respect to the device upon which it is being fed, in order that the feeder may be retracted when required. A further object is to provide for retaining said parts in such neutral relation until it is desired to release them. n
rJhe invention comprises in part the ratchet feeding mechanism disclosed in my copending` application, Serial No. 133,023, Vtiled September 1, 1926, the common subject'mat ter being claimed herein. Said invention resides primarily in a sliding` yoke or frame carrying a feeding pawl which co-operates with and actuates a locking or checking pawl or dog also carried by said frame, both of the pawls working upon a toothed rack provided on ay body which carries the ratchet frame and along which said fra-me slides as it is operated. Preferably the pawls are actuated and the frame is moved through the medium of a handle movably mounted on said frame. In addition, the preferred embodiment comprises a retainer which engages one of the pawls, such as the feeding pawl2 when the pawls are moved to neutral position for retracting the mechanism, this retainer being conveniently released without a separate operation, as through movement of the handle, when it is desired to actuate the device again. The invention resides` further in such other novel features, constructions and combinations of parts as maybe herein disclosed.

A bo'dy,`in the form of a channel bar 14 in which is secured a toothed bar or rack 15 having teeth 16,r is provided to carry the ratchet feeder and also to support the tool which is to be fed, which tool is illustrated in the present instancevas `being a mortising tool having a chisel 2O and a knife adapted to mortise a door -D- or the like. Since` the tool with which the ratchet is used is immaterial and forms no part of the'present invention, a further description thereof is not considered necessary and is not here given.
The ratchet device upon which protection is sought in the present case comprises a sliding yoke or frame 8O which is looped around the body 14 to slide thereon and is provided witha bottom wall 81 having at its forwardV end an upturne'd flange and an `oiset ledee to provide an abutment 81` to engage tne work for pressing the latter The side walls of the are connected by means of bolts or screws 3 andV 83; while a feeding pawl or lever 34` mountedfwithin the frame is provided with lateral extensions84 which terminate in `trunnioi'is 85 mounted in the bifurcations 86 of an operating handle, the lower ends of said bifurcations being frame by means of a pivoting pin 87 extendme' p afl Sis pivoted upon the therethrough. The rear endv ofthe provided on: tlie upper 'side of4 its tip with a number of teeth 88 adapted to engage with the teeth 16 of the rack 15, whereby the pawl 84 acts as a feeding pawl for the device. rlhe forward end of pawl 84 is in the form of a short arm or linger 89 which is adapted to ride up on an inclined face 91 of a locking or checking pawl 92 pivoted upon the bolt 83 and having a lower arm 9-/l which approaches the bottom wall 81 and is engaged by a spring 95 norma ly urging said pawl 92, and its arm 94, upward to cause the upper tip of the upper arm thereof to engage with the rack teeth 16. A spring 96 disposed around pivot pin 87 normally urges pawl 84 upward into rackengaging position.
N hen the handle and its bifurcations 86 are swung forward into the position of Fig. 2, the linger or arm 89 of feeding pawl 8e engages the rides up on face 91 of checking pawl 92, thus withdrawing teeth 88 from engagement with the rack and at the same time depressing` pawl 92 and withdrawing it also from the rack, whereby the pawls are placed in neutral position and the entire device is freed for sliding movement along the body bar 14. `When the parts reach this position, as seen in Fig. 2, the upwardly and rearwardly curved tip 96 of spring 96 engages in a correspondingly formed notch 98 in the under side of the rear end of feeding pawl 8e, and retains this neutral relation of the parts by preventing rearward motion of said pawl 811.. However, the end or tip 96 is so rounded and the notch 98 is-so formed that a little rearward motion of the handle causes said spring tip 96 to be disengaged from the notch, so that the parts may be moved to the operative position of 6.
rlhus, it will be seen that by movement of thel handle 86 forward (that is, to the right in the drawings) the parts will be moved to the neutral position shown in Fig. 2, when .f the handle reaches Vthe limit of its stroke,
the spring tip 96 ente/ring the notch 98 to retain this relation if the handle be left in such position. The frame -may then be shifted along bar 14 at will. When the handle 86 is moved rearward, the teeth 88 are soon urged upward by the spring 96 (after release of tip 96 as above explained) into engagement with rack 15, whereupon continued movement of the handle rearward causes the. frame 86 to be. shifted forward alongl thebar to feed the device, this being accomplished by` reason of the engagement of the teeth 88 with the rack and connection` of the handle with the fr me and with the pawl 8d. This feeding movement having been accomplished, the checking or locking pawl 92, which has riddenV over the rack teeth 16, now engages with the rack and lnevents return of the frame when the handle is-again moved forward to carry the pawl 84 forward, the pawl teeth 88 then riding over the rack teeth. This movement is best indicated in Fig. 6, and, if it is not desired to place the parts in the neutral position of Fig. 2, the handle movement may be terminated when at the position of said Fig. v6, or the entire stroke of the handle may be completed, since the pawl 84 will be immediately released from spring 96 when return movement of handle 86 is started.
I claim:
1. A ratchet feed comprising a body, a frame movable on said body and carrying an abutment jaw, a handle swingingly mounted onV the frame, a feeding pawl mounted on the handle and a locking pawl mounted on the frame, said pawls being adapted to engage said body, said feeding pawl having a finger to engage the locking pawl, whereby upon movement of the handle both of said pawls may be released from the body, and retaining means for engaging one of said pawls when withdrawn from the body to retain the pawls in neutral position.
2. A ratchet feed comprising a body, a frame movable on said body and carrying an abutment jaw, a handle swingingly mounted on the frame, a feeding pawl mounten on the handle and a locking pawl mounted on the frame, said pawls being adapted to engage said body, said feeding pawl having a finger to engage the locking pawl, wiereby upon movement of the handle both of said pawls may be released from the body, and retaining means for engaging the feeding pawl when in released position to retain the pawls in neutral relation.
8. el ratchet feed comprising a body, a feeding frame movable on said body, a handle swingingly mounted on said frame, a feeding pawl mounted on the handle and a locking pawl mounted on the frame, both of said pawls normally engaging said body for feeding action, the feeding pawl having a finger adapted to engage the locking pawl upon extreme movement of the handle for withdrawing both pawls from engagement with said body, and retaining means for engaging the feeding pawl when in released position to maintain the neutral relation of the pawls with respect to the body.

A ratchet feed comprising a body, a feeding frame movable on said body, a handle swingingly mounted on said frame, a feeding pawl' mounted on the handle, and a locking pawl mounted on the frame, both of said pawls normally engaging said body for feeding action, the feedingl pawl having a finger adapted to engage the locking pawl upon extreme movement of the handle for withdrawing both pawls from engagement with said body, and retaining means for engaging one of the'pawls when in released position to maintain the neutral relation of the pawls, the retaining means being releasable upon handle movement.
5. A ratchet feed comprising a body, a feeding frame movable on said body, a handle swingingly mounted on the frame, a feeding pawl mounted on the handle and a locking pawl mounted on the frame, both of said pawls normally engaging said bod whereby upon movement of the handle within certain limits the feeding pawl feeds the frame upon one stroke and the locking pawl holds the frame upon the opposite stroke, the feeding pawl having a finger to engage the locking pawl upon eXtreme movement of the handle, whereby continued movement of the handle releases both pawls, and retaining means for engaging the feeding pawl when in released position to maintain the neutral relation thereof, said retaining means being movable to releasing position upon actuation of the handle.
6. A ratchet feed comprising a substantially straight bar having a rectilinear rack provided with ratchet teeth, a frame slidably mounted on said bar, a handle pivoted in said frame for oscillatory movement, a feeding pawl pivoted on said handlevand adapted to directly engage said rack, whereby upon movement of the handle on its operative stroke, the feeding pawl feeds the frame longitudinally of said bar, a locking pawl pivoted on said frame and adapted to interlock with said rack for holding said frame against movement upon said bar when the handle is moved on its inoperative stroke, and a spring for each pawl normally urging the same into direct engagement with the rack of said bar, said feeding pawl having a finger adapted to engage said locking pawl when the handle has been moved to the full extent of its inoperative stroke, whereby both of said pawls are disengaged from said rack so that said frame, handle and pawls may be moved longitudinally of the rack without operating the handle.
