Description

June 24, 1930. o. M. BEAllL 1,766,095
SOUND PRODUC ING TOY Filed May '15, 1929 Patented June 24, 1930 OLLIEML BEALL, or" nns MOINES, IOWA SOUND-PRODUCING 'roY Application filed May 13,
Theprincipal object of this invention is to provide a novel instrument capable of producing sound when held in' the hands and air blown through it.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device upon which a tune may be played.
A still further object ofmy invention is to provide a musical instrument that is economical in manufacture and durable in use.
These and other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby'the objects eontemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: i
Fig. 1 is' a perspective View of my invention properly held in the hands of the op-' erator and ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the musical instrument with dotted lines to more fully illustrate its construction.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of my invention.
' I This device is designed to be used in comthe portion 12 desi ned to be grasped between the thumb and forefinger of the left hand as shown in Fig. l. Extending downwardly from the opposite marginal edge of the base member and curved around the forward portion of the opening 11 is the wall 13 as shown in Fig. 3. The rear portion of the base portion is pointed to allow The forefinger of the left hand rests around the forward end of this wall 13 and all of the the two thumbs of the user to meet.
fingers are grasped. bythe right hand a 1929. Serial No. 862,758.
shown in the drawing. By this arrangeigtaoes ment, the inner side of the thumb' of the right hand will rest on the wall li thereby creating with the base portion a cavity".
The numeral 14 designates apipe formed by bending a portion of the forw'ardfend of thebase member, and having one end termination adjacent the opening 11.
By this construction, it will readily be seen that I'have provided a musical instrument that may be fabricated froma single sheet of materiah By holding thedevice in the hands, as heretofore described, 3 and blowing through the forward end of the pipe 14, sound notes will be produced. If
the dimensions ofthe-cavity obtained by'the device andhandsare changedor anoutlet from the cavity is obtained by opening and closing the hands, various musical notes may be obtained.
Sound, by blowing through the pipe, may
also be obtained by the use of only one hand if the same is so placed around the under side of the base portion that a cavity communicating with the opening 11 is obtained. If it is desired, a rubber tube 15 maybe used, having one end around they forward endof the pipe 14 and its other end designed to be placed in the mouth of the operaton This tube may be any length, desired.
The device also makes a most excellent whistle.
Some changes may be made in the con struction and arrangement of my musical.
instrument without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use ofmechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim V 1. In a device of the class described, a base member having an opening and de signed to be held between the two hands of the operator, a projection on the said base member designed torest betweenthethumband forefinger of the operator, and a pipe secured to said base member and terminating adjacent said opening.
2. In a device of the class described, a
' base member having an opening, a circular Wall secured to said base member and embracing a side portion, of said opening, and
a pipe terminating adjacent said opening. 3. In a devlce of the class described, a
- base member having an opening, a clown- Wardly extending Wall at one side of said base member and embracing a portion of said opening, and a pipe having one end terminating adjacent said opening.
4. In a device-of the base member having an opening,a Wall secured to said base memberand embracing a side portionof said opening, and a pipe term'inating adjacent said opening.
1 5.'In a device of the class described, a
'base member 'having' an opening and designed to beheld between the two hands of the operator, a projection on said base member designed torest between the thumb and forefinger of the operator, a pipe secured to said base member and having one end terminating adjacent said opening, and a flexible tube communicating with the oppo- I site end of said pipe.
6. Ina device of the. class described, a base memberhaving an'openin'g, a pointed end integrally formed on the rear end portion of said base member, a projection on said base member. designed'to vrest between the thumb and forefinger of the operator,
and aipipe secured tosaid base member and terminating adjacent said opening.
