TERMINAL-POST arracnnnivrroassaak rLUcr'sI f ff Application filed. November 28 1927. ;Seria1 No. 336,112 l 1 This invention relates to a terminal post attachment to be used on spark plug posts and the like, and articularly to that type which is adapted or use with spark plugs 5 having different sized terminal posts, and
also with wires having terminals of difierent' shapes and sizes. p a
7 One object of this present inventlon is to provide an attachment for 1 terminal posts 10 that may be used on spark plugs having terminal posts of diiferent'diameters, byslotting I the side walls of the attachment to different depths to permit the sizing of the attachlng portion'of the same. The longitudinal slots of, different lengths in theside walls permits a flexing of the body, member to fit posts of different diameters and at the same time prevents undue spreading of the divided portions' at their bottom end. Furthermore,
that portion of the body member adjacent its open end which contains all the slots, is more I easily flexed than that portion containing only a portion of the slots,'so that with a small post the body member may be pinched together to cause a tight fit at the lower portion of the post, while when used with the large post the unequal lengths of the longitudinal slots permit the easy starting-of thebody member on the post and insures a good gripping ofthe outer end of the post because of the less numberof slots-betweento permit flexing. In this construction it is evident thattheportions of the-body memberspread further apart at the long slots thus causinga twisting effect on the body member which lends a greater resiliency thereto which could not be obtained if the longitudinal slots were of the same length.
contemplation of aterrninalpost having a spherical head and a series of annular grooves of different depths to retain wire terminals of different shapes and sizes; f With these general objects in View, as well as minor objects which will appear in the course of the detailed specification, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanyingrdrawings illustrating a construction embodying the improvements of this invention.
Another object of this invention is the .may be used to meetcertain conditione In thed-rawingeFigure 1 isjan elevation of ani'or'dina-ry spark plug havinga terminal post on which is mounted an attachment'em bodying this invention. 'Also a1 wire ter minal is shown in operative'relationwith saidattachment. Y r
ig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentaryview of the upper end of thespark plug with the attachment partlybroken away, and in posi U tiononthe terminal postof said'spark plug no 'minal post attachment embodying this,in1-- 'vention,and v ,Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of a'modifi'ed form of thefsame. I 7 f f Similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views,a11d= the numeral 5 designates a spark-plug having the usualthreaded terminal post 6,-;to which as shown in'Figs: '1 and 2, is'secl'ired'theiiojvelattachment" 7 as hereinafter}described; I Terminal post *attachment 7jconsists ofaf cylindrical body member: 8,-haviiig an inter nally threaded portion 9, and terminating at jonexendwin a spherical-member *1O, which is 7.51;
adapted to be engagedby the spring clip ter; mina'l 11 .of the wire 12. Forthe reception of different l'z'indsandsizes of Wire te'rini-U na ls v which are in generaliuse; the body*8 is provided with a plurality ofspaced'apartan so nular'grooves l3 of different depths. These annular-rings are preferablypositioned ad jacent Itheclosed end of the spherical inember 10, in order to provide a more suitable positionfor the Wire terminals, and also'to I permit :a better flexing of the threaded p'or'- tion: of the b'ody member 8. 1 1 Longitudinal slots=-14 and 15 ent'ending fromthexopen end .of the body'member 8- todifferent distances therefrom are-shown body 8 away from the spark plug core cap, which is generally provided with a fillet that would tend --to spread the portions of the body 8 too far a-part'should the samebe V screwed tightly against the vcore cap. In Fig. 4, in which the lugs 16 are omitted, the
threaded portion .of the body .8- is counter boredto properly fitthe fillet to avoidnndue v I V spreading of the body 8;; r p I v While Ihave. shown the body 8 as circular I in cross section, yet it may-"be of any suitable shape for receiving awrench to force the aty v "tachment to its operative position onfthe spark plug post. I 4 I 1 1 l Ildo not lirnit thisfinvention to the construction shown and described, as many mode ificati ons may, be made within the scope of the appended clainiswithout departing from the spirit of the invention r V {What I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent is i r 1 1.
