Description

F. M. HUGHES.
PUZZLE-BLOCKS.
No.176,53 2. Patented April 25, 1876 N. PETERS, FHOTO-LIHIOGRIPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
FRANK M. HUGHES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD M. JUDD AND HUBERT L. JUDD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUZZLE-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,532, dated April 25, 1876 application filed December 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, FRANK M. Hoenns, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Puzzle-Blocks, of which the following is a specification Toy building-blocks have been made cubical, with portions of pictures upon the respective surfaces, so as to be set together to compose the picture; and there have also been. letters and figures upon the respective surfaces of such blocks; and flat square pieces of wood have been divided diagonally, so that a cen tral letter is upon the respective pieces.
My present invention relates to a toy made of four cubical blocks, with parts of letters, figures, or words upon the respective surfaces, arranged so that by placing the four blocks together the portions of letters or figures upon the respective surfaces compose a complete letter or figure, or a portion of a sentence or word, thus affording .both amusement and instruction in placing the blocks properly to gether.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing the cubical blocks placed together; and Fig. 2 is a diagram illustrative of the surfaces of the four blocks if laid out flat.
The sides of the blocks shown in Fig. 1 represent the letter A as in the center of the four blocks, a portion of the letter being upon each surface. If the blocks are turned, two and two together, so that the faces containing A come toward each other, the letter B will appear at the intersection, and so on, C and D. Then, it the left-hand pair of blocks be transferred to the right of the right-hand pair of blocks, the letter E will appear at the intersectlon, and so on the entire alphabet will be produced.
If desired, numbers may take the place of letters, and words or short sentences may be placed upon the surfaces of the cubes, to be composed in the aforesaid manner.
This toyis very amusing and instructive, and unless the elfort to place the blocks properly together is begun and continued in a regular prearranged order, as indicated, it becomes difficult and amusing to find the'letters or numbers as they occur serially in the alphabet or as required.
I claim as my invention The alphabetical toy composed of four cubical blocks, the six surfaces of each of which contain portions of letters, arranged to form, when properly placed in connectien with the adjacent blocksurfaces, a complete letter or letters, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 6th day of December, A. D. 1875.
FRANK M. HUGHES.
