IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FANS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,521, dated April 25, 1876; application filed January 8, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD DORNHEIM, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Adjustable Fans for Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.

The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable fan for bedsteads, either in private dwellings or hospitals; and it consists in a suitable frame-work, provided with a rotatin g fan and clock-work, made adjustable at any desired point between the head and foot of the bedstead, by means which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

The fan is set in motion by the clock-work A at the side of the bedstead. After winding it up and lifting the stopper or pawl B the fan will be set in motion. If the work is made of the required size it will operate without noise. The pawl will allow, at any moment, of stopping the fan or of setting it in motion. The fan has three wings or blades, 0 O O, which may be covered with some light material, say green silk, which wings are secured to an axle, O, which is supported in a framework, D, high enough to raise the fan snfficiently above the bed. The frame D, on both sides, rests on rollers I), which run in grooves E along the side rails of the bedstead, somewhat below the mattress, thereby allowing neat tucking in of the sheets. The board D, which unites the frame-work underneath the bedstead, has a ring, D, at each side, with cords F attached, which run in pulleys G at the head and foot of the bedstead, by which the frame carrying the fan and clock'work can be very easily adjusted in any position between the head and foot of the bed.

I do not claim, broadly, a self going and adjustable fan for bedsteads, as this is old but What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The frame D, supporting the fan and clock-work, in combination with the rails E, having the grooves E, the cords F, and pulleys G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the subject-matter of the above claim, the rollers D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
