This invention relates to improvements in sheet metal casings or jackets for boilers, radiators, etc., and has for its principal object the provision of a casing which shall be simple in construction, and which may be readily assembled without the use of complicated fastening devices and assembling tools.
Another object of the invention 1s the provision of a sheet metal casing which will serve to retain in place the coating of heatinsulating material with which boilers are ordinarily provided, and which will present withal a neat and attractive appear- A ance.
These and other objects of the invention will become more readily apparent in the course of the following description of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,wherein Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the caslng or jacket;

Fig. 4 is a top view of the casing or jacket with the top cover plate removed;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-section through one corner of the casing, taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, showing the manner in which the side plates of the casing are secured to the front and rear plates thereof;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-section taken on the line 6--6 of Fig. 3, showing the clip which prevents buckling of the upper portion of the side plate, and which assists in preventing lateral movement of the two sections of the top cover plate of the casing; Fig. 7 is an enlar ed cross-section taken on the l-ine 7--7 o Fig. 3, showing the manner in which the two sections of the top cover late are secured together.
In t e drawings, a cast iron boiler is designated generally by the letter B, and is provided with various doors 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and other appurtenances 6, 7 and 8.
The casing, or jacket consistsl of a front plate 9, a rear plate 10, side plates 11 and-` 12, and a top cover plate 13, comprising two Vseparable sections 14 and 15, the entire casing being preferably made of smooth finished sheet iron. The spaces 16 and 17 between the sides of the boiler and the side plates 11 and 12, and the space 18 between the top of the. boiler and the top cover plate 13, are normally filled with heat insulating material, the casing thereby serv- Y ing to retain the heat-insulating material in place, and to prevent it from being injured or damaged in any way.
The various parts of the casing are provided with as many openings as are necessary to accommodate the doors and other appurtenances of the boiler, and the top cover plate in particular is provided with a number of circular openings 19 to permit the passage therethrough of various pipes and other conduits with which the boiler is provided.
The front and rear plates 9 and 10 of the casing are-provided with beveled marginal portions 20 which terminate in ianges 21 that extend substantially the full len th of the plates. These flanges are prefera ly formed with a straight portion and a reversely bent U-shaped portion 22 which forms seats for the reception of the marginal edges of the side plates 11 and 12, as is clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
By means of the construction described, the side plates are secured to the front and rear plates without the use of bolts `or other fastening devices. The frictional engagement of the side plates with the front and rear plates vpermits a certain degree of' movement or adjustment between the vari'- ous parts, and this is of advantage in that the various parts are thus left free to move oo rigidly in place.

The sections 14 and 15 of the top cover plate are provided on one side and at the front and rear with a downwardly turned flange 23 and the conti uous edges 24 of 'the sections are left un anged. Each section is provided with a clip 25 which is spot welded or otherwise secured thereto, and which serves a purpose to be presently described.
Secured to the'inner face of the front and rear portions of the flange 23 of the section 14, as by spot welding or other means, are short saddle plates 26 which extend beyond the unflanged edge 24v of vthe section, and the outwardly projecting portions of' these saddle platesA are provided with apertures 27. The casing is assembled on the boiler in the -following manner:
The doors l, 2 and 4 and other appurtenances 6, 7 and 8 are lirst removed from the boiler. The front and rear plates 9 and 10 are then placed in proper position adjacent the front and rear of the boiler respectively, and the doors are then replaced, the fastening devices which secure the doors to the boiler serving to retain the front and rear plates The side plates are then slid downwardly in the marginal seats 22 of the front and rear plates as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Suitably enlarged holes are provided in the side plates so that the devices 6, 7 and 8 may be replaced on the boiler and still permit slidable movement between the side plates and the front and rear plates.
The section 14 of the top cover plate is then placed on the previously assembled parts in such position that the clip 25 will engagein the rear of the side plate l2 in a manner clearly shown in Fig. 6. The other section l5 of the top cover plate is then placed in such position that the clip 25 will engage in the rear of the side plate 11. The clips 25 serve a two-fold purpose. They prevent the side plates 11 and 12 from being bent or forced inwardly in cases where these plates are relatively wide and they also yassist in preventing the two sections 14 and 15 of the top cover plate from moving apart laterally.
Bolts 28 are then employed to secure the front and rear portions of the flange 23 of the section 15 to the saddle plates26 and thereby prevent lateral movement of the two sections of the top cover plate.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the size or shape of the various parts of the casing without departing from 2. In combination with a boiler, a casing I including front, rear and side plates; said front and rear plates being rigidly secured to the boiler and having marginal flanges terminating in U-shaped portions, and said side plates bein held in slidable engagement in said U- aped portions for the purpose of permittin limited relative movement between the front and rear plates and the-side plates.
4. In combination with a boiler provided with devices for securing doors and other appurtenances thereto, a casing including front, rear and side plates; said front and rear plates being rigidly secured to the boiler by means of said devices, and said side plates being held in slidable enga ement with said front and rear plates or Athe purpose of permitting limited relative movement between the front and rear plates and the side plates.
5. In combination with a boiler provided with devices for securing ldoors and other appurtenances thereto, a casing including front, rear and s ide plates; said front and rear plates being rigidly secured to the boiler by means of said devices and having marginal seats, and said side plates being held in slidable engagement in said seats for the purpose of permittinv limited relative movement between the lront and rear plates and the side plates.
6. In combination with a boiler provided with devices for securing doors and other appurtenances thereto, a casing including front, rear and side plates, said front and rear plates being rigidly secured to the boiler by means of said devices and having margmal flanges terminating in IU-shaped portions, and saidside plates being held in slldable engagement in said U-shaped portionsi for the purpose of permitting limited relative movement between the front and rear plates and the side plates.
.7. In combination with a boiler provided with devices for securing doors and other appurtenances thereto', a casing including a plurality of plates surrounding said boiler; certain of said plates being secured to the boiler by means of, said devlces. 1
8. In combination with a boiler provide with devices for securing doors and other appurtenances thereto, a casing including front and -rear plates and side plates surrounding said boiler; said front and rear plates being secured to the boiler by means of said devices.
